Bar is too formal.
Location, Reception rooms, staff
Portions very small in the restaurant. My portion of fish was gone in two mouthfulls and had to fill up on bread. The pool was unheated, which was a huge disappointment for my children, especially with the cool/rainy weather we had during our stay
location we very good
vague staff, poor bathroom, expensive for what we got,
Location Staff very sweet on the whole
Basically needs a proper on site maitre d'hotel to sort things out. Staff v sweet but need training and proper time and motion study needed in restaurants especially Oyster rest. First room we were given was awful so moved us second night thankfully!!! Also trying to be all things to all people: perhaps concentrate on kids and parents and leave couples out. xxx
restaurant service - untrained staff with the majority of them without focus or enthusiasm. they look but don't see. noone even once has checked with us (whether at the restaurant or at the reception) whether we had a good meal/stay. we were the only foreign people at the hotel (although there is no problem with the fluency of English here) but I got the impression they had never seen foreign people before and largely ignored us. I had actively to search for attention at the restaurant in order to get anything done.
The staff were generally very friendly. The grounds were good and the beach was lovely.
The atmosphere within the hotel was somewhat like a library. During the evening my husband and I seemed to be the only residents around! There was not even background music. The room, though pleasant had ripped curtains and seemed in need of some TLC. Also the drinks were expensive and not very extensive! I will not be making a return visit.
The place and beach is super. The closeby village seaview is also a very nice spot. The hotel staff are very nice and food is delicious.
We had some trouble with the booking. We had found the room at a low price that the hotels agency then tried to top up the price. However the staff at the hotel made sure to charge us the correct price and said that it was none of our concern. A little bit annoying to get those phonecalls but in the end it cleared up in a good way.
The location was beautiful, lovely walk to the beach. The Priory is a lovely place to stay. The vue from our bedroom was amazing looking at the boats going pass & all the grounds in front of us. Very peaceful & relaxing. Staff very friendly.
Shower in our bathroom did not work. Looked like it could be an on going problem from the look of the carpet who had been lifted but not put back properly. Made the bathroom look shabby. Mentionned to the reception every morning. But nothing was done about it.
Location was excellent. Food and service was also excellent.
Certain aspects looked as though maintenance is a problem. No doubt this is because the building is old and difficult to maintain. We were disappointed not to see any red squirrels and noticed there were relatively few birds around. Maybe the grounds could be made more attractive for wildlife. Maybe a pond, bird boxes bird feeders, sown wild flowers etc.
Views over the sea and of the grounds. Large bedroom. Comfy bed.
Rather small bathroom compared to the main room. Water pressure a bit low in shower. Stairs to get to the room were a bit awkward if you had a lot of luggage. Initially overcharged for rooms (double). Told check out was 11.00 am on checking in, then had a call telling me it was 10.00 am
Since places are not very distant from each other on the Isle of Wight, Priory Bay has a great location overlooking the Solent. Wonderful main building and gardens, and you can't beat the view. Breakfast (the full English variety) was excellent, as was evening wine in the large parlor overlooking the gardens (the weather being a bit chilly).
Not much to not like; the height of the doors in our room was a bit of an issue (I'm 6'1" and my wife 5'7") but remembering to duck a bit became second nature.
Unfortunately the reception staff was poorly trained. Both check-in and check-out were not up to standard, cold and made me feel unwelcome. Equally, the restaurant staff while friendly were inefficient and not very attentive. Both things are certainly not overly dramatic and the hotel is still very beautiful, it just taints the experience slightly and can be rectified with more thorough staff training.
Staff very attentive and helpful
WiFi reception in hotel patchy. Breakfast was pretty average. If you are on Vodafone there is no signal ( not the hotel's fault )
The bedroom was the best we've ever been in. It was large, well equipped and had lovely views of the sea and the beautifully kept gardens. The bathroom was luxurious, too. We would have expected a safe in a room of this calibre.
Service in the restaurant was unbelievably slow. When we went in on our second night there was no sign of any staff, and we were very surprised and disappointed that the menu was the same as the night before. The food was not brilliant, the vegetables were brought in a cereal bowl with no serving spoon. We had to ask for pudding forks..
Staff were helpful and courteous. Wonderful venue and grounds. Very comfortable and pleasant stay.
Evening meal was disappointing. We had to return the side of beef which was not up to its £50 price tag for two, and was like an inferior rump. That said, the staff were quick to act and there was no dissent. Some of the decor (carpets) a little tired, but nonetheless there was a lovely atmosphere there.
The staff made us feel very welcome and were warm, friendly, and very professional. The setting is very picturesque and the views from our room were stunning. We look forward to returning in the future. The food was superb.
there wasn't really anything we didn't like. The furnishings were a little frayed around the edges although it added to the charm.
The fantastic room we were given with three windows looking on to the bay; the warm welcome; the private beach; the food!!
Loved the historic feel of the priory, the thatched roof of our cottage, the space, the beach. Wonderful
The drawing room, the cast iron roll top bath
It was delightful throughout
The room was magnificent, but the whole experience was rather let down by relatively mediocre but high priced catering. The position of the hotel could not be bettered, the whole property being surrounded by greenery with a feeling of being "away from it all" in a crowded island.
The food and drink were in my opinion poor value for money. The dining room did not match the relative splendor of the rest of the house--in particular I resented being presented with a very expensive unknown wine which was approaching the paint stripper category. This is a pity since I have stayed here before -- this was definitely an experience I would not wish to repeat.
Very friendly staff, lovely spacious bedroom, excellent dinner and breakfast
We were staying in Tithe Barn which is said to be the 11th century house! 4 of us was travelling though it will easily fit 6 people - the house is absolutely amazing with huge reception room, 3 bedrooms, incredible bath and one more bathroom. You can see the garden and the see from the windows and enjoy the atmosphere of the island. The heating is efficient and it was very warm inside despite the age and thick stone walls of the house. Garden is very well looked after and beautiful golf fields give the emotion of endless green grass going directly to the sea. Gentlemen at the reception were extremely polite and kind, would definitely love to be back again.
Everything! the website and photos really don't do this place justice, its a whole lot better than you might think from previous reviews. From the candle lit entrance lobby on arrival to the friendly, welcoming, nothing was too much trouble staff. The feel of the place is lux / shabby, lived in home from country home, the grounds and location, the room service, the food was great and I don't ever give praise unless its really deserved and this place is a real gem of a find I will be back with friends, family and kiddies
Wonderful welcome from Ralph and the rest of the staff. Excellent diner and drinks in front of the fireplace. A hidden gem full of history!
