This historic building was once visited by Charles Dickens for his public readings. It offers a Dickens-themed restaurant, light, modern rooms with private bathrooms, and a themed bar.
Score from 432 reviews Good
Peaceful location, cordial staff. Availability of Microwave and Refrigerator in the room made a big difference. Wi-Fi worked well.
No restaurant / room service. Bathroom fittings are a little old.
Window curtain n heater in bathroom not working. No maintenance done even after complaining about it.
candy in the reception taste good
the room we lived is smelly，it made us feel strange and worried about whether it is clean or not
The location was good and staff were very helpfull. The breakfast was very good.
The mattress in our room was well past it's best and very lumpy.
Location. Excellent for the university.
We were put onto an annexe of the hotel and whilst it had plenty space and rooms the standard was poor. The accommodation smelt damp and lacked basics like a mirror.
CLEAN, COMFORTABLE GOOD SIZED ROOMS IN A CENTRAL LOCATION TO THE UNIVERSITY, EXACTLY WHAT WE WANTED.
Location and price
Needs some love and tender care . An older building but could do with up dating . Ceilings especially . The hotel was priced right for what you were getting .
The staff did their best to help with the heating problem.
Unfortunately I arrived late, like 11pm and the room was very cold and with the heating not working at full blast at night it was impossible to warn it up.
Clean, basic and very good value for money. Very good car parking
We had to travel very far to our room and we can luggage with us we were taken to the next building no lifts loads of stairs The person who took us forgot his was aswell We were tired and didn't expect to be walking around for a while trying to find our room
We asked when we checked into the hotel to see if we could extend our check out time to 12pm and was told this would not be a problem. But then 11am the next morning there was knocking on the door it was house keeping kicking us out.
Professional and courteous staff. Lovely breakfast.
Late night revellers arrived at around 4am and disturbed our friends in their room. Perhaps reception could remind late arrivals to be considerate of sleeping guests.
Quiet location: away from the downtown. Location near bus stops to Reading centre. (Very regular service) Support from the staff. Room appliances: sink, cutlery, crockery, microwave, etc. Value for money.
Suggestions: Room 401; light over the sink - could not see clearly. Room 505; mirror over the desk for use when using hair dryer. No electric razor socket in the bathroom.
You get what you pay for.
Good value for money on the budget rate. Above average room facilities.
Nice staff, cheap and chearful
Smelt like a care home
Staff friendly & welcoming Manager sending vouchers to make up for disturbed night.
Dreadful smell from fridge in the room. Was kept awake by a noisy couple opposite until they were evicted in the early hours of the morning.
Poor room maintenance Room was dirty Blind needed replacing as it was damaged Cups filthy Sink had a large crack in it Towels were very small
Comfortable bed, Quiet despite location on a main road. Free wi-fi. Good Breakfast. Powerful shower. Lots of hot water.
Lack of wardrobe space.
Heated bathroom mirror. Clean room. Good price.
Unreliable heating in the room. Poor, dirty corridor (dirty white curtain, worn carpet) in the 3rd building, looks like under renovation...
The staff were great, love the microwave & the fridge in the room! The size of the room, bathroom & TV was incredible!
The plug was clogged up with old soap & hair from previous visitors & the window frame almost came entirely out as I tried to open the window but you don't expect a 2 star hotel to be amazing.
Perfect location, close to town centre. Room was immaculate and very large. Staff were very helpful. Breakfast fresh and plenty of it.
This good value hotel is well situated for visiting my daughter who is studying at Reading University. It is easily reached from the station by a very regular bus service and it is equally easy to walk from the hotel to the university campus or halls or residence.
No problems experienced.
Friendly staff who let met check before the check in time. I asked for a spacious room and they put us in a triple quiet room. Clean and tidy. Very good value.
Breakfast is not included.
The fridge in the room was excellent. The microwave was handy and needed. The ice cube maker was so impressive. The price was so affordable and good
THe sheets and towels were old. Lack of good toiletries poor Internet check out tine is too early.
