Proximity to town centre The room (1) had a window which was approximately one metre from another building. The 'outlook' therefore was literally onto a brick wall. The net curtains were dirty, the room stuffy and we could not open the window because there was a condendsor unit on the brick wall and litter in the void between the two buildings. We asked to change rooms but were advise the hotel was fully booked, so used the room to shower and change prior to our event but checked at 11pm without staying overnight. We left our telephone number but have not heard from the hotel, three days later.

Check-in and parking were simple and efficient. Room was small but comfortable and adequately equipped. Location was ideal for our night out at the Anvil and the staff were very friendly. Breakfast was an extra cost but was very nice and hot, however see my negatives for more details. Breakfast was a disorganised affair with long waiting times. We fared a lot better than some others, but as this was a Monday morning and there were few people I would have expected it to run smoother. Nobody seemed to be in charge and the staff were arguing amongst themselves. We weren't in a hurry so had no complaint, but others certainly did.

The receptionist was very polite and helpful and the waitress at breakfast, whilst obviously new, tried hard to be helpful. The bed was incredibly soft so neither of us got a particularly good nights sleep. The room was unbearably hot and this led to problems breathing as there was no air in the room. At breakfast, the waitress, who was new to the job, was hindered in her attempts to be helpful by a colleague who insisted on telling her the incorrect way of doing things and then laughing at her when she got it wrong. This resulted in our breakfast taking over half an hour to arrive and subsequently made me late for my business meeting. The food, when it did arrive, was barely edible and was obviously rushed in cooking once it was realised that there had been a mistake.

The staff. Reception on arrival, very efficient, trouble free booking in- staff friendly. Barman in the evening could not have been more helpful. The pair on at breakfast were brilliant as a team,a joy to watch them work so well together. The young lass (on waiting) - I had to compliment - her smartness so early in the morning was superb. Reception on leaving -no problems at all. Friday night, is NOT the night to stay in the Red Lion. Friday night, in Basingstoke, is PARTY NIGHT, in a big way. Sleep was only possible after 3.00am - music, shouting and screaming prevented it before then. I do not believe that any noise was created WITHIN the hotel but from local clubs/bars As we had a very busy day planned for the Saturday , the lack of sleep was not appreciated

General Ambience was good, bed was very comfy. Hotel looks tired, and charges a high room rate for such a worn out building.

A good stay. Nice room, good staff. I was worried about the noise-but we were put on the top floor and at the back. Never heard a thing and, thus, slept like a log! Will use again

Clean, very comfortable and warm. Easy to reach from station. Friendly staff, Towels and bedding etc of good standard. Not noisy when I stayed despite location. It would have been good to have had breakfast included in the price I paid. Nhs discount would be very attractive for staff like me travelling regularly for course. Loyalty discount for re-booking also be incentive.
