Our first impression was what a Grand Looking Hotel and although it may need a lick of paint here and there but what an lovley Atmosphere. The gentleman on Reception was great, very helpful and sorry i did not get his name. Our bedroom was very spacious and a Glorious view of the sea. Some other reviews were not so good but I must disgaree with all of them, if you want a 4star Hotel then got to the Hilton this Hotel has survived two world wars and is very Historic and has a lovley feel when you walk in. The Breakfast was great with everything you could ask for and it was waitress service which was another bonus, so overall if you want a Hotel with character, nice staff, clean rooms and lovley meals and exzcellent location then you must try THE REX.

We had to leave the Hotel in the Middle of the night because of the unacceptable noise levels from the club downstairs. The Hotel is in need of maintenance and I was not very happy with the security of the rooms i.e. the lock was not very good. However the Staff were very helpfull.

The hotel needs to be refurbished to bring it into the modern world but we have every confidence that this is in progress. The staff were exceptional in their efficiency, friendliness, and desire to be of help. Despite having booked out in the morning we were allowed to park all day(free),and offered a room in which to change into travelling clothes for our journey home. Breakfast was varied, plentiful, well-cooked and presented. Our room was huge with a magnificent sea view & all amenities. We were delighted at the price of £50 for a one night stay for 2, full English breakfast included. Well done the Rex. We have already recommended the hotel to friends who were staying nearby at a cost of £130 per night for room only.

The beds were clean, the view was excellent as we had a sea front room for 2 of the 3 nights. We were moved after the first night as the original room had problems with the plumbing. The bathrooms in both were disgusting. No towel rail or toiletroll holders. Could only get basic tv channels. WiFi was pathetic, kept dropping out. Breakfast was disgusting, bacon like cardboard and sausages with skins so hard you could hardly cut through them. Tatty decor and carpets. Was listed as having 'some ' noise from nightclub, We were lying in our beds trying to sleep but this was impossible as the beds were vibrating with the heavy base music till 3am. When mentioned to Chris at the reception on the Friday he was very offhand and basically told us we would just have to suffer it. Was so relieved to be going home to peace and quiet. Not a hotel for families, only suitable for clubbers Thursday, Friday & Saturday, and only if they are not fussy about their surroundings or breakfast. Worst hotel I have ever stayed in by far.

The room was very clean and comfy. The hotel staff were not the most helpful was asked to leave the bar area as they said they had to lock up the bar in case there was trouble??? The nightclub next door was extremley noisy the whole building shook until 3.00am. Breakfast was poor i had to ask for the table to be set for orange juice and for toast. Would not go to this hotel again or recommend this hotel!!!

We had a huge room with 2 king size beds, overlooking the beach, bathroom could do with updating. Only drawback was the loud music from nightclub under hotel blaring until 3am. Overall it was good value for money.

Location was excellent as was the breakfast. Value for money!! Front of house staff abrupt, unhelpfull and childishly kept blowing a whistle. Room basic,no toilet paper, window would not lock. However the breakfast was excellent as was the view. Being a coach driver would I take a party for more than one night debatable. Was however value for money.

Really helpful friendly staff who went out of their way to assist. Warm and comfortable room with a fantastic view of the sea. (We requested a room with a view and we certainly got one.) Excellent cooked breakfast with a wide choice, including fruits and cereal, served to you on a beautifully set table, individual tea pots. We did hear some sound from the nightclub but it did'nt bother us. We would certainly recommend the Rex Hotel to anyone wanting to stay in Whitney Bay.

the hotel was dirty and very dated. The hot tap wouldnt work in my room and i was told maintenance wouldnt be in until morning. I said i needed a wash before then and was offered a single room as alternative. I told them i had paid for a double so reluctantly gave me a key to another room, without lifting from his fish and chips or the tv screen. there was no offer of apology or assistance with the move. the second room was freezing and knobs removed from radiator so heating couldnt be turned on. all the windows let air through.

Rex is a fading beauty, lovely location, great view if you get a front facing room, look out for loud disco music on weekends till three, ask for a room away from "Deep" nightclub. Nice artwork in public areas. I really like the Rex, some won't, disco music is a minus, but I am a sound sleeper.
