In a 15th-century building, The Three Cocks Inn is on the edge of the Brecon Beacons. It has spacious bedrooms featuring original wooden beams, home-cooked food and free parking.
Score from 122 reviews Wonderful
Surrounded by beautiful scenery but just a few minutes' walk from Hay-On-Wye's centre, this charming inn has a traditional wooden-beamed bar.
Score from 174 reviews Very good
Set in the beautiful Welsh countryside, this characteristic 16th century building has been transformed into a comfortable guesthouse, while still maintaining many of its original features, including...

The character of the building
Room was cold
Character of building, creaky floors, pretty bedrooms, good breakfast, friendly owner.
Not a dislike really. I hadn't realised until after booking that the restaurant is currently closed for evening meals, so we had to get in car (impossible to walk) and drive to nearest food place (the Boat Inn ~ excellent food / friendly staff) but meant I couldn't have a beer with my meal!
Not my first stay here - a perfect piece of old world charm and chintz - parts date back to the 14th century. Set in lovely countryside, the Rhydspence is perfectly placed for Hay-on-Wye with its various festivals and events. Finding a more personable host would be difficult. The restaurant is no longer open but the breakfast is hearty and will see you through the best part of the day.
Some noise intrusion from other rooms and a few creaks - but this is an old coaching inn and not an impersonal concrete box.
Quiet, lovely bed, spacious room, good views, easy parking. Convenient for Hay or Kington. Very good value for the price.
No evening food - this was clearly stated in the information, so no surprise, but you do have to drive to get to pubs/restaurants.
Comfortable room with free toiletries, teas and coffees. Comfy bed.
Sorry but the room needed a more thorough clean. Dust, hair and flies - not good.
The comfort and very good service, we particularly enjoyed the fact that it was an old established inn and not a modern rather clinical place.
Everything was excellent
We only stayed at Rhydspence for one night, but it was absolutely perfect. The room was big and light, and very clean. Toiletries and tea, coffee etc are all provided. The bed was so comfortable we could have stayed there all day! Breakfast was lovely, and the owner came over many times with fresh coffee. Great value for money; we will definitely be going back. Only a ten minute drive, if that, from hay on wye too. Gorgeous gardens, and a lovely little bar with an open fire where we enjoyed a drink after going out for dinner.
Nothing, we had a perfect weekend :)
Historic inn. Great atmosphere.
What a beautiful place. The beds were so comfortable. Wonderful building. Would certainly recommend staying here, we will definately be returning.
The history of the place made to feel welcome as soon as you got there. Lovely breakfast kept you full nearl all day.
The only thing I would say that our room did not have a shower only a bath
Everything else. No mention that the restaurant was closed , we had just walked 21 miles no car . Host was arrogant and uncaring. Host only had out of date crisps to sell us (18months out of date) and totally refused to start breakfast before 9.00am next morning
Location, very peaceful even though just off the main road. Proximity to Hay-on-Wye. Ambience..very old and atmospheric place. Helpfulness of owner. Good breakfast. Comfortable although a bit out-dated in facilities, but that was part of the charm too!
It was unfortunate that seemingly recent reviews of particularly the food facilities....home cooking and great evening meals, were sadly out of date. This seems to be due to the fact that the recent (new) owners had to withdraw because of serious illness. We wanted somewhere we could settle in for the night, and found ourselves going further down the road for food (The Boat Inn)...all was fine and it was a lovely summer's evening...rather than a horrid winter night! Our host, on our return, was very accommodating and along with another guest, we were all able to have a pleasant drink or two, out on the patio as the light faded over the hills.
Loved the sense of history in the place and imagining what it must have been like all those centuries and all those that have passed through the same doors.
Overpriced for standard of accommodation and standard of breakfast
If you look for new hotels, skip this one, built in 1380! If you like old world charm, this is the place. We loved it.
Hard to get to from Hay, but the hotel came and fetched us.
loved the charming and unique rooms, great breakfast, and congenial host.
large room with 2 windows large bathroom, no shower
lack of general cleanliness bedroom carpet in need of replacement . outside areas lack of maintenance. restaurant closed. kettle did not work, replacement kettle with a lot of lime scale in bottom. do not know how this hotel can have 4*s.
the building inside and outside. position and views.the room was first class.breakfast great.
there was no food available in the evening. we used the inn down the road.
The Rhydspence Inn is a beautiful 14th Century Country House situated on the Welsh border of the Wye Valley, just before Hay on Wye.
Apart from the interesting building there is absolutely nothing to save the place. The staff makes a great effort to make you feel as unwelcome as it goes. You are lucky if they greet you upon your arrival. The bar was very loud until the middle of the night, which means we were not able to get any decent sleep. The room was full of dust and spider webs. Although we booked a double room for 2 guests, some standard facilities such as soap were not even available for 2 persons. The breakfast, which for some reason is described on their website as award winning, is tragic: some soaked in oil English breakfast that made us nauseous all day. To avoid at all cost!
Excellent location for visiting Hay-on-Wye or further into Wales. Lovely old building. Charming from the outside.
Overpriced and underwhelming. Decor pretty tired and probably unchanged since first done up some decades ago. Hence no shower cubicle and had to shower while crouching in the bath. Breakfast adequate but no enticing buffet with fresh fruit or yogurt, as might be expected for the price. Facilities and service sufficient, but not what you'd really expect for the price.
Great location in the gorgeous Wye Valley. Amazing guest house 600 years old. Charming host Peter recommended dinner at a local pub The Boat great meal and spectacular river view.
Friendly and hospitable. Charming company and delicious breakfast!
Excellent staff. Very helpful. Impressive room
Very comfortable and friendly service.
WiFi was temporarily unavailable.
Fab location, the lounge with lovely log fire and extra comfortable seating, the warm welcome from Peter.
