Terrible in every way.I didnt like anything about the Hotel, poor service or no service, dirty in every area, stained furniture, hair in the bathroom everywhere. No meet and greet. No table ready for breakfast then a very long delay. short of staff. Cleaners have not cleaned for some time. Everywhere you look it's dirty. All the furniture and walls are chipped and knocked. No room service food as stated, untrained staff and a total disengaged manager. It looks great and but is far from what it appears to be. It looks like it's about to shut down or they are struggling to pay their way.

The setting and the beautiful landscaped gardens, also the spa facilities. Fabulous location for a wedding or a relaxing weekend away. Excellent full english a la carte breakfast menu included in room rates and free parking. My daughter loved the bed with drapes, but really wanted to sleep in one of the four poster beds. Unfortunately she could not as the hotel was full as a wedding was in progress. Bathrooms were a little tired looking, could really do with a makeover, but we used the spa, pool showers etc., also a very limited dining menu. If there had being more of a choice, we would have eaten there instead of going elsewhere as the prices were very reasonable.

We stayed before and loved the old quaint house and it's surroundings, we had stayed in the main house back then and felt transported back in time with all the comforts of a modern age. Unfortunately this time round, we found this lovely old building in serious need of repair and freshen up. We had a suite this time and although you would expect this to be better that the main house bedrooms, it was very disappointing... The rooms are in very poor state with fixtures hanging off the wall, the shower rail coming away from its fittings and the spa swimming pool in serious need of repair... Come on Oxford hotels & inns, this old place deserves better

Staff were very helpful. Building and location were good The entire place needed some TLC.The decoration was tired, the spa swimming pool definitely needed a new coat of paint. Some details didi jar a little, e.g. out side our room ( room 26) there was an unsighly hole in the plasterboard. In our sitting room, the television in the main cabinet was missing.

Very convenient location near m1 & e Mids airport. Lovely gardens & characterful main building. Reception staff efficient but rather 'cold'. Room v quaint but bathroom was in urgent need of refurb (E.G. cracked basin, huge shrinkage gaps, white mastic & grout gone almost black if there at all); safe in wardrobe made constant clicking noise (all night) & when reported next morning, acknowledged but no apology for disturbed night. Breakfast appears plentiful but bacon & tomato from cooked selection was 2 tomatoes & half a rasher of bacon - rather mean! Swimming pool was a main choice criteria but it was not in use.

We did chill and relax in the grounds and visit a good antiquey shop in Heanor. We couldn't have the delux suite as the boiler was broken, so were transfered to a room in the main building. I wanted to have a treatment in the spa but was unable to as someone had switched the machine off!

Location was convenient, quiet and would have been an elegant establishment in its day which unfortunately has long since passed. A once elegant hotel has not been well maintained as observations from a walk around the building clearly showed. Rotted external timber work in evidence and a fire exit that had not seen any cleaning or maintenance in a very long while - filthy carpet, cobwebs and cigarette butts/ash of apparent long standing. Bathroom was ancient and the grouting within the shower/bath tiling would have been of great interest to a microbiologist. Breakfast choices and quality were underwhelming - have experienced far better in 2 star hotels. All in all a disappointing experience.

Hotel has a very relaxed feel to it and is in a great location just off the motorway. Suite was large with separate sitting room and had a huge bathroom. Very quiet and comfortable. Breakfast and service good. Changed rooms to a larger suite after being given a much smaller one on the ground floor where we could not safely leave windows open. The separate wing with the suites in was a strange soulless building which had the feeling of a prison - not helped by the heavy doors! Needs a few plants and sympathetic decor. The rooms although comfortable and large are in need of a freshen up and are looking tired round the edges - too many boozed-up wedding parties perhaps? Confetti was still evident outside in the hall from the previous weekend. Cracked floor tiles (in the first suite bathroom), broken towel rails and very dodgy light fittings are not a 'deluxe' look. Camp bed for 12 yr old was hopeless so had to put mattress on floor.

Friendly staff at breakfast While the building itself is pretty, the whole place has a "tired" feel. It would not take a lot of effort to really improve the place, but it generally felt that that was unlikely to happen. The room (a suite) was a good size, but the paint was yellowing, shower tile grout stained brown and the fabrics worn and tatty (though the rooms were clean). While the staff at breakfast were very attentive and friendly (top notch service), the food itself was mediocre at best. I would not recommend room service - I tried to order a Caesar Salad from the "24 hr Room Service" menu (4 phone calls to get hold of reception) only to be told there were no chefs (how hard is to to put together??), so opted for a cold beef sandwich at 11 pounds. Not impressed

Enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere Risley had to offer and staff in breakfast room were very welcoming and helpful. Fact that our room didn't have free standing bath and separate shower as advertised when I booked - this was very disappointing! There were a few areas in our room and around the hotel that could benefit from general repair and decoration - most of these were due to damp/water damage! These areas I spotted immediately on entering our room, especially the rotten window frames/sills and the water damaged bath panel that was hanging off one end!

Its location to the motorway network and to our destination. Poor service in the restaurant lack of choice on the menu and none availability of dishes shown as available on the menu. The fabric of the building is also very shabby and in desperate need of renovation.

Loaction near m1 junction 25 and pleasent area. The room suite was excellent. The staff very helpful and welcoming. The cooked breakfast was of a very poor quality and not very well presented. I can't believe that such a thing could let this hotel down, but it did.

Good value for money. Remember its very old plenty of history with lovely features but clean and we had a huge suite. Nothing to much trouble for the staff. breakfast was freshly cooked and served rather than the trend to buffets.

Beautiful old building with lots of character, however the hotel requires refurbishment in most areas. Facilities good but again look a little tired. Staff were polite and very helpfull. Plenty of choice at breakfast with good service despite them being very busy. Excellent value for money but not worth the full tariff. Communal areas needed deep cleaning.

We liked the grounds and the beautiful old building. The pool was lovely and warm. The room (we were in a suite) was comfortable and very cozy. Staff generally were nice and helpful. We enjoyed a nice ramble around the grounds after check in and got some great photos. The decor in the old house is lovely & old world but it's all a bit run down and shabby now. Needs a tasteful refurb to bring it back. The 'prisoner cell block' which houses the suites, needs to be roofed properly, a front door put on it and a serious rethink about internal decor. Pink marble and chip board is not a good look! The suites are nice inside but a bit shabby. Huge shower cubicle that all of us could have fitted in! Really hot water, comfortable beds, thick black out curtains and nice views from the bedroom. I'd only recommend this hotel if you aren't too fussy about things being new, clean and in good working order! If you are prepared to rough it a bit, then it's just fine. Lovely in places, awful in others! The most disgusting breakfast we have ever been served! Thankfully, they gave us lots of toast to fill up on as the cooked breakfast was inedible. I love my food and it takes a lot to put me off eating but this was like a nothing I've ever experienced before. Revolting! To make breakfast worse, every one of the juice glasses and jugs were filthy. The complete lack of atmosphere in the dining rooms proved too much for the British reserve and you could have heard a pin drop - very sterile and uncomfortable! The room we booked (a suite) was in an adjoining building which was surreal - we finally concluded that it must have been prison cells converted into rooms. Horrible pink and unfinished decor with an awning strapped over the building as a roof. The place was freezing and covered with leaves, wet and dirt. The swimming pool dressing rooms were dirty and tired. The pool needed repainting. The evening meal was a joke - £11 for fish, chips and peas that were all shop bought and very small portions. Should have been priced about £6.50 to make it a fair price. To be fair, this is a great hotel but it's dirty and shabby in too many areas to gloss over!
