Right in central Barnstaple, this historic hotel combines old world character and charm with the convenience of a modern hotel.
Score from 282 reviews Very good
If you are seeking the authentic flavor of the West Country then look no further. This picture-book thatched-roof inn is nestled in one of England's most unspoiled landscapes.
Score from 175 reviews Excellent
The location and views from the windows were very good. The breakfast was excellent.
The décor was a little tired in style and some of the furniture and fittings were in a poor state.
the food was excellent, and the location of the hotel fantastic
the hotel was freezing cold, could have done with the heating on earlier in mornings and evenings
Excellent food,friendly staff.
Cheerful and friendly staff, great views over the river from restaurant and our spacious suite. Excellent food at all meals (abandon any hope of a diet, portions are man sized). Enjoyed a quiet relaxed atmosphere and would return.
No lift and whilst the stairs are shallower than standard, there are more of them. Whilst there were sufficient towels of good quality in bathroom they were small in size.
Room very clean and comfortable
The fan in the bathroom very noisy , needs updating
The friendly staff, the lovely view from the picture window in our bedroom of the river. The freshly cooked breakfasts and the great value for money stay. Location not far from excellent bus service into town and Barnstaple.
There was nothing we did not like
Spacious room, very comfortable bed, friendly staff, would recommend
Outlook was good.
Room very tired and in need of refurbishment. Hotel generally down at heel and needs a facelift.
We enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere, the excellent staff great food, wonderful views from our bedroom
Visiting a friend, hotel in good location, nice room, lovely view, comfortable, clean and good value. Enjoyed walking by river with my little puppy.
Staff seemed to care about helping guests. Plenty of space in bedroom and masses of hot water and heating. Excellent choice of food for breakfast. Would book again.
Room very big Bathroom big Restaurant excellent value
Shower was temperamental going hot and cold. Rooms in need of updating
Hotel was very tired.
spacious room, view of the estuary, parking. Breakfast was excellent, great choice of main course. Evening meal was excellent ,great choice and well prepared, huge portions. I would recommend this hotel over other very expensive hotels I have stayed in
putting on weight! rooms were a little old fashioned but clean and comfortable ,new furniture would be an advantage but did not spoil our stay at all.
huge room with a 4 poster. nice staff lovely breakfast. good value for money.
bed dipped in the middle. traditional décor needs updating
breakfast, brilliant views!
Lovely views, friendliness of staff, hot freshly cooked food and generous portions.
Lots of stairs to climb & no help with our luggage on arrival. Shower only trickled out.
Friendly staff and very comfortable rooms. Good evening meal and excellent breakfast. Very good value for money.
This is a very old fashioned hotel that is gradually being refurbished. Our huge room and bathroom were a step back in time, with some worn bits of furniture. It was very comfy and bed was great. Food was traditional but good too.
The dining room smelt stale, easily field by better exhaust system.
comfy big room
I was hospitalized with food poisoning after staying here. I do not make these comments lightly, but after passing-out on the motorway and being in bed for a week, I feel I must. I ate nowhere else, it was definitely here I fell ill.
Our second stay at this hotel and we cannot fault the welcome attitude of all the staff we came in contact with. The food both breakfast and evening meals were excellent and the rooms overlooking the estuary and large garden were very clean, peaceful and relaxing.
Personally we prefer to have a duvet instead of blankets and some rooms have them and others don't. However this is a very small item in the overall comfort of this hotel.
Excellent food, good portions, good value for money. Quiet area within walking distance of the town.
Decor though clean is worn. It is very dated but does gives the hotel character.
lovely friendly staff, food to die for! comfortable very large room
Couple of things needed a bit of a clean, given sauces and marmalade from another table at breakfast (both in pots) didnt like that much.. shower very weak
View, very friendly staff, food and room size
