The old style of the hotel, decor, etc. The room was cold and the bathroom was freezing, very small accommodation, not very good value for money.

Atmospheric old inn, on a good link near the University. Walking distance to town (c. 20 mins). Free parking. Free wifi, although some rooms have variable reception. Friendly staff. Excellent breakfast. Poor wifi reception in my room.

As a regular hotel user for business stays, I was looking for a good quality hotel for a private night at reasonable price for my wife and I to meet with my son currently at University in Colchester. We couldn't have chosen better, Very different as the building is old, but beautifully maintained. The stay, although short, was perfect and enjoyable. Would stay again and highly recommend. Thanks to all.

Fantastic friendly reception (special mention to Kevin) - levely staff throughout. Used their Room Service for Dinner and Breakfast - and both first class. Only negative was the damp smelling bathroom - may have been the shower curtain

Location English breakfast. I had mushrooms, scrambled egg & bacon, my wife had bacon & sausage. The portions were extremely small & looked ridiculous on such a large plate. It seems that you only get one sausage or slice of bacon regardless of what you order. It seems that you would only get a decent sized breakfast if you ordered everything eg black pudding, tomatoes, beans, etc etc. It was extremely poor value for money. Surely 2 sausages & 2 slices of bacon is not too much. We had to eat lots of toast just to relieve the hunger!!

the reception staff on arrival was very good and nothing was too much trouble. on a whole the staff were exceptional. i was dissappointed to see the bathroom looked rather tired although clean, the plug was broken in the bath and just placed on the side, the grout looked like it needed a good scrub as was coloured in places and there was excessive mould around the edging of the bath.

Our stay was very enjoyable. There was a wedding reception on Sunday night and understandably there was alot of noise which we find acceptable but the room seemed to be directly above the function and could be heard extremely loud until midnight. This was rather intursive.

Location was convenient for where we needed to be in Colchester. Room was perfectly adequate, and was set up for use by a disabled person (not needed by us, but good that they have such a facility). Initial access to the room was bizarre, involving going up stairs, along loads of corridors, then down again to the ground floor, where we found there was in fact a door permitting access directly to the outside (for disabled people). We had to carry our luggage all that way, only to find we could have gone straight in from the car park. I was not impressed that the receptionist did not suggest that we did so. Obviously not all rooms have this 'issue'. The location of the hotel, on a junction of two busy roads, means it is never going to be quiet and peaceful, but our room was particularly noisy (it was a hot night and we had to keep a window open).

I was slightly puzzled that my bill was more than that advertised in brochure and did not include breakfast--the internet said last room available so I booked immediatly as I had qualified for a sports tournament. Everything else was fine with one exception-- there was a drunk man having breakfast and I felt the young waitress needed firm assistance on the Sunday morning. William Ormerod

Very good check-in and out. Meals in bar good value for money. Convenient for walking to town. I would prefer an inclusive bed and breakfast price because splitting it allows for inflation of the cost of the breakfast. I feel was slightly over the top compared with the value for money in the bar.

Perfect location, fine hotel. Booked an extra night as well. Splendid help with the noise reduction of our neighbours in the hotel, some people can get really drunk... The bed was covered with synthetic sheets. That's not convenient in any way. I would expect more comfort.

Friendly, helpful staff. Clean and more than adequate room. Parking was easy and location for the town was excellent. Nice 'pub' atmosphere. We stayed overnight to attend a local wedding so can't comment on food etc but we would return. Bath very high sided so would be difficult for anyone with mobility problems. Long way to walk from reception to our room - not a real problem for us but again would be for people with mobility probs as no lift.

Had read all the reviews on this hotel, so was very pleasantly surprised to find: The standard of the room was above average. Comfortable, clean with an excellent bathroom. Staff were very friendly and the bar area was comfortable and inviting. Breakfast was excellent. We experienced nothing detrimental to our stay. However it would be fair to say that if there was a function there and you were early to bed, there might be some noise from the car park area, where there is the smoking area.
