“Staff at the hotel were great fun to talk to along with professional service. Made my little holiday break perfect along with my partner. Done some research in colchester to find that this hotel is great and the other hotel i was going to choose has very bad opinions. Facilities are also great along with the location of the hotel.”

Location was good for my needs, however nothing on the web site to saythat wedding venues are taking place and the rooms are above them!! Plus to clean after I was woken by the sounds of the Hoover at 0600hrs which took the edge off the day, would I stay again? Yes, but I would require a room away from the wedding venues I wouldn't call any of the above complaints just observations

I was actually expecting a tiny and/or tired room for the rate I booked, but I actually got a spacious and beautifully appointed room, and even though it was located in the old building (which I love) it was modernised and stylish in an understated way. I intend to go back to The Rose & Crown and recommend it to friends and colleagues. Well, just a tiny 'negative' comment which had not much to do with either the facilities or the staff: my window was overlooking the car park and reception entrance and next to it were a couple of tables and chairs where smokers parked themselves smoking and chatting away in quite a loud voice (I guess, not realising that just above there were bedrooms). My message: please smokers, stop polluting the World and blabbering around in loud voices!

Most impressed by the evening meal menu - innovative and well prepared dishes one does not usually find in a pub type facility, and not expensive. Far better than the very mediocre lunch we had the next day at a more central competitor on the High Street, a renowned old hotel. We also much appreciated the parking facilities which allowed us to visit the town safe in the knowledge our car would not be incurring a parking fine.

Quaint and friendly hotel. Wifi didn't work in bedroom, had to go the the public bar to access service. At breakfast my porridge and bacon and eggs were all served at the same time - though thankfully not on the same plateQ

The food was beautiful and very well presented. Good value for money. The hotel itself was very interesting as its said to be the oldest inn in the country. Also it has kept all of its olde-worlde features, a very nice atmosphere.

The hotel was well situated and the staff were very friendly, the food was excellent but served on wooden plates and steel baskets which seems a waste of time as plates are easier to eat off when we asked for plates the staff broughtbthem straight away The bathroom was very cold and the showers took way to long to get warm and there was not enough staff on duty in the bar but the staff that were there were first class but over worked, the food should be served on plates not bits of wood and steel baskets but the food was very very good

Very nice ambiance, very large room, very nice tavern as ambiance + taste. The staff was very friendly and nice. There was hot water which was very important in a freezing winter day and also there was Internet everywhere in the hotel. A bit far away from center, the bed was too screaking and the bathroom was very cold.

The price was very competitive but the place is certainly not cheap. The hotel is attractive inside, I was checked in without fuss, and my room was clean and warm (despite it being V. cold outside). The breakfast was also very good, and the service staff prompt and friendly.

Fantastic friendly reception (special mention to Kevin) - levely staff throughout. Used their Room Service for Dinner and Breakfast - and both first class. Only negative was the damp smelling bathroom - may have been the shower curtain

the reception staff on arrival was very good and nothing was too much trouble. on a whole the staff were exceptional. i was dissappointed to see the bathroom looked rather tired although clean, the plug was broken in the bath and just placed on the side, the grout looked like it needed a good scrub as was coloured in places and there was excessive mould around the edging of the bath.

Our stay was very enjoyable. There was a wedding reception on Sunday night and understandably there was alot of noise which we find acceptable but the room seemed to be directly above the function and could be heard extremely loud until midnight. This was rather intursive.

I was slightly puzzled that my bill was more than that advertised in brochure and did not include breakfast--the internet said last room available so I booked immediatly as I had qualified for a sports tournament. Everything else was fine with one exception-- there was a drunk man having breakfast and I felt the young waitress needed firm assistance on the Sunday morning. William Ormerod
