Well run, nice staff with one exception. Great breakfast, nice rooms, good facilities. Just short of being exceptional. The general manager, owner was just plain rude and discourteous- for no apparent reason. There you go, what a shame, a good hotel marred by one individual.

The meal we had in the restaurant in the evening was the best we have ever had. It was presented very well and we it was extremely good. The spa was very nice. I have recommended this hotel to work colleagues and friends. The reception staff were not in my opinion very professional and who I asume was the manager hovering around the desk as we checked out didn't make any conversation and I felt this was bad mannered. Also the room was so hot in the night it was almost unbearable.

Very professional and helpful staff. Our room (riverside suite) was large and comfortable, with french windows onto a small patio by the river, which was the only sound to 'disturb' us. The public rooms were beautifully decorated, and we had four exellent meals in the conservatory/dining room. (2 evening meals and two breakfasts) The hotel is well located just on the edge of the village centre. Nothing of importance. There is nothing between a simple bar snack and a two course £29 meal in the restaurant, although they were very accomodating to us.

Very convenient for country walks and good location. Room very clean. Staff friendly. Evening meal in restaurant expensive. No atmosphere in dining room at all. Spa not what expected, too small and too open, on show to all! Walls very thin in bed room, could even here next door blowing nose!!

I was so impressed with the contemporary style and furnishing of the hotel. Our loft suite was beautiful with every amenity and luxury. The staff were all faultless and the restaurant food and service....superb! This really proved to be a fantastic choice for a romantic break.

The staff were great and the food was excellent.I was upsel at finding a false nail in the bed. As I do noy have such things it made it a bit uncomfortable at the thought. But otherwise it was good. The work on the dining room had we been informed of this we might have made a different decision as it was nice in the alternative accomodation but we were very close to the people at the next table so it was difficult to relax and talk. So a lot pof whisperin went on.

Easy access, friendly and efficient staff, superb breakfast in a lovely restaurant, also an excellent bedroom (22) with king-size bed, a balcony overlooking the river and a lovely, spacious bathroom. Dinner in the restaurant (fantastic menu) was a tad too expensive for our budget so we dined at a nearby bistro which was also very good. Overall we loved the Rothay Garden Hotel and rate it very highly - we'll be back! Impossible to even nit-pick

A comfortable, relaxing country hotel. The staff were efficent and discreet. The room was well appointed, dinner was very good with an excellent wine list - the vintage port was the best I have ever tasted. Breakfast was perfect - just what you needed for a lazy Sunday Morning

Fantastic stay! The Only short comings that I could find were the lack of a lift in the hotel and no minibar in the room, otherwise this hotel would surely be 5*!

Loved everything< especially relaxing in the spa. Excellent staff and great food. The bed was extremely hard and uncomfortable, leading to sleepless nights for myself and my husband. This did affect our overall enjoyment of our stay.

Stylish design/decor, spacious room, lovely setting and views My only complaint is that the room was very dark - there was not enough light for reading - a serious issue for me as I like to spend hours reading after a long walk!

The spa - new and well maintained. It provides well needed rest and relaxation after a busy day out. The rooms are large and well presented with a balcony for sitting outside on a nice day.

The staff were excellent and very polite. The lounges and rooms within the hotel were furnished to a high standard. The spa was beautiful and a great way to relax after a long day. I would highly reccomend this hotel. One of the best shortbreaks I have personally had.

Great location, great facilities, our room (which was a loft room) was spacious and had wonderful views in two directions. Particularly impressed with bathroom - big bath (with tv) and separate shower, double sink and V. spacious. The location is perfect - quiet, but close to the wonderful village of Grasmere and lots of great mountain walks without having to drive. Dinner was excellent. Only slight criticism was that some of the staff weren't particularly welcoming and were a bit off-hand.

The hotel decor was a very high standard, the conservtory was lovely. Breakfast was very good and the staff were very attentive and friendly. The matress was in our room was very uncomfortable, and despite sleeping with the window open (and it was snowing outside) the room was really too hot.(possibly due to the rooms location?) These are small things however it meant my partner and I did not get a good night's sleep and this detracted from an otherwise very enjoyable stay.

We had a very pleasant 2 night stay in the Loughrigg Loft Suite - we were initially put in the Garden Suite on the ground floor but stated we would prefer a loft suite as per our booking. The Garden suite was a lovely room but we did not like the idea of looking on to the Spa with its full length windows - guests and public can view occupants in the Spa (no frosted glass) Of note, the dining room also looks on to the Spa although we did not eat dinner at the hotel. The loft suite was ideal with a separate lounge area which was very cosy, large bathroom and a large bedroom. The suite was luxurious ( not overlooked) but if over 5ft 5" tall remember to duck when entering the lounge area! Not so sure I would pay top brochure price for the Suite but was happy with what I did pay through booking.com. We did not use the Spa as we did not like the idea of being on show to all. The staff were all friendly. The only small negative was our first morning at breakfast. I asked for bacon, tomatoes and scrambled egg and was presented with a large plate with half a grilled tomato, one small rasher of bacon and a dollop of scrambled egg (processed egg mix) and could only assume that the hotel was hot on portion control. The next morning, I requested porridge, two rashers of bacon, tomatoes and poached eggs and was much happier with the contents on the plate. Porridge is served with cream and maple syrup and is delicious.

The food and menu was excellent although rather expensive The loft suite we were given was much smaller than expecting & the position of the beams were very dangerous. The view from the room was nothing like the description we felt rather let down with the room.
