Most of the Hotel staff were excellent, especially the concierge guys. They will help you with problems or information. In general I like the Roxburghe Hotel, as its comfortable and relaxing. The food is superb but expensive. Try to get an Inclusive deal... The hotel has limited parking and if you can get in, it will set you back a very steep £20 per night. I have been to this hotel twice now and had parking tickets awaiting me both times in the morning. Be warned, you get free on street parking from 18:00 to 08:30, don't be outside these times. The parking wardens are fanatical and must be on bonus. I had a ticket at 08:35 (my colleague was late down to breakfast, Grrrrr). The reception staff do not inform you of this. Also, for the very first time at a MacDonald Hotel, I felt the hotel was in real need of a freshen up. I have always found these hotels to be first class but some parts were looking decidedly tired....

The staff were always helpful and made your stay pleasant. The food both breakfast and dinner was fantasic also. All the little extras really make this hotel value for money as well as the excellant standards and customer service. Bar prices - very high.

My husband have just returned from the Macdonald Roxburghe Hotel and loved every minute of our stay. I genuinely cannot praise the staff enough. We were afforded the benefit of an early check-in which was wonderful as we were attending a wedding that morning and the professionalism and courtsey of the staff was second to none. Our room and bathroom were beautiful with wonderful views of the square. We have stayed in more expensive boutique hotels in Edinburgh but the Roxburghe surpassed them in every aspect of hospitality. We have every intention of returning to the hotel and would like to take this opportunity to thank the staff and management for a wonderful stay at their hotel.

I can not say that I will choose this hotel again. It did not give me anything positive. It is very expensive for the services it provides . I will rate it the most two star. Breakfast was very poor in quantity , style and type of food. Our stay was 6 nights and every day for breakfast was scrambled eggs, eggs sunny side up,beacon, sausages. Every day a little after 08:30 ,(breakfast started at 07:00 ), the pans ,bowls, plates and tables were almost completely empty of food. The staff which was in charge of breakfast did not refill the food.I Had to remark and call out to the staff continuously each morning for them to bring out food. This was very expensive breakfast to pay for in comparison for the quality and most of the time there was a shortage. The coffee cups were dirty inside. The manager sent me a letter informing me that I should pay for the whole six nights on the second day of our stay.I Rate this hotel two stars the most. The rooms are not cleaned right there is dust all over the furniture.

- Very helpful staff - Very comfortable spacious rooms - Breakfast well prepared and enjoyable and at reasonable times - Leisure facilities and spa - Mulled wine and pies on Christmas Day very welcome - Bit disappointed in the Leisure facilities. Would have liked a Jacuzzi and area around pool a bit tired and untidy

The hotel was in a terrific location - so close to all the city's attractions - perfect for a sightseeing and shopping trip. The staff were so friendly and helpful and the facilities in the hotel were excellent. We would definitely stay here again!!

Great location, beautiful hotel. Nice room. Good breakfast. Evening meal nice. Spa treatment... Room was second floor up and although nice, was quite noisy due to passing traffic, lots of buses and also late night revellers shouting in street that woke us up couple of times. Twin beds not double, would prefer double. Evening meal was nice but menu choice restricted to 2 courses and only certain dishes on spa deal which was dissapointing. Wine also overpriced. Reception staff friendly and efficient at check-in, however on checking out, we were overcharged on bill by approx £40. When I queried the bill and showed proof of cost of room and how much extra we should have paid (ie for a bottle of wine at £18.50 that we had with included evening meal), the member of staff took considerable time pondering whether or not I was right. When they finally realised the bill was wrong, there was no apology whatso ever for their mistake. This is not good customer service. It wasn't the fact that a mistake had been made, more that there was no apology. I left the hotel feeling quite shocked at this. It tainted my whole experience at the Roxburghe and would not return.

The acceptance by the gentleman who helps us parking the car was great. Good there is a parking place opportunity in the garage of the hotel. Location in the middle of the town close to the Princess Street and castle is very well. Equipment of this hotel is very pleasant. The stagiairs are great and hospitable, although you don't recognize them as stagiairs; they perform as professionals. Room and bed were good at the reverse side of the hotel. Breakfast was very ample. Rooms are too noisy at streetside - no double glass at all while hotel is middle of centre. Shower didn't work: no constant temperature. Too many guests had to wait because of the too small and slowly elevators. The reception of the ladies in the entrance hall was uninterested and not focussed as you should expect in such a hotel. So we had to ask everything by ourselves although she had the reservation in front of her. She didn't pay any attention to our request about the parking place. Service of the hotel wasn't good: we couldn't get help with getting our luggage out of our (in garage) parked car, while we were not allowed to get the luggage out of our car in front of the hotel at the arrival. The stagiairs are great, the rest of the personnel is not really interested.

Excellent location for the main attractions yet quiet and peaceful inside for a busy hotel. Good sized comfortable room. Superb value for money on our deal. Staff efficient and friendly. We travelled by car and finding the hotel was extremely difficult. Stopping outside it was almost impossible not helped by the road works in Princes Street.Small hotel car park was fully booked and nearest was ten minutes walk and £26 per day!

The concierge was fantastic and very helpful arranging luggage and organising taxi's. Breakfast was superb and breakfast staff were very attentive and helpful. The hotel room was in the new building which was by far not of the same charm as the rest of the hotel. I had very noisy fire doors outside the bedroom door. The pool was dated and tiles were mouldy. All in all this is a hotel half finished and did not mention this on website. We booked this for our honeymoon and were sorely disappointed. Check in staff were few and far between for a busy reception desk. After arriving after the check in time, there were still no rooms available and after numerous calls to housekeeping a room suddenly became available.

The room was clean and comfortable and I especially liked the location which was central and convenient for sight seeing. I thought breakfast was overpriced and the service and food wasn't as good as it should have been for the price. I also thought I had read that the tv had lots of channels but this wasn't the case, there was 1 to 5 and sky news.

Pleasant staff, good restaurant service. Room was well equipped and to a good standard. Our 2 night stay was spoiled by noise. Our room was on the top floor (5th) but was incredibly noisy. The fire doors just outside the room banged incessantly all through the night. On the second night there was a wedding reception taking place and while some allowance has to be made for the party spririt, guests were screaming and shouting in a central open topped atrium well past 2.30am, with no apparent attempt from hotel staff to quieten them down. This is not an inexpensive hotel and, including only one night's dinner, all in we spent close to £500 for 2 nights.

We stayed in room 230 very comfortable bed and nice to have s hotel room with a bath. Used the sauna, steam room, pool and gym. They need updating but were good to use. Location is excellent, we walked everywhere and castle on your doorstep. Suggest book restaurants in Edinburgh at weekends before you go if you want a table! Concierge were very welcoming and helpful. The swipe cards for our room didn't work the first time because receptionist had forgotten to authorise them, bit of a pain going back to reception to get it fixed. Ordered breakfast in bed one day and they hadn't put on my tomatoes although I had requested them. On getting back to the room at 10:30pm one night I called room service for a coffee and a bottle water. After half an hour it hadn't arrived so I cancelled it. Nice hotel, shame all staff aren't as helpful as the two men at concierge.

The location is very good for walking to most tourist areas, shops and dining. Elevator is extremely slow. Never could find the leisure center after diligently looking and following limited signage. Paying for wifi is ancient way of doing business! Even the one computer in the business center cost 4gbp and didn't even work without 'freezing up'. Lounge service staff were not efficient and came across as flustered and unorganized (for a nightcap).

I liked the price and the position for the hotel ie central to shops and other attractions. The view of the castle from the room was lovely. The meals were lovely. I was not happy with the cervice of the reception staff with their communication regarding complaints regarding the room. The pool was very cold. I have stayed before and enjoyed it but I would think twice now about picking it again.

It is in a good location. The Interior Design in the lobby was nice. The room I stayed in was badly designed. They had put furniture in places where you couldn't use it. The fridge was located at the end of the bed but you couldn't open the door because the bed was in the way. I asked for afternoon Tea. They had a lovely book by Twinings describing afternoon Tea it all sounded very good. Unfortunately being a lover of a good cup of tea I was most disappointed to find that they had used a tea bag that wasn't Twinings and didn't taste very good at all. They didn't even use china tea pots they used those old metal tea pots that where popular in the 70's it made the water taste disgusting and all metallic. I was absolutely shocked that after selling there afternoon teas in the brochure as absolutely the best afternoon tea this side of the equator I got a disgusting cup that I couldn't even drink at an extortionate price. Also In the bedrooms they had placed a table so close to the bedside that the table hung over the edge of the bed this meant that throughout the night if you moved your head you ended up banging it on the side of the table. I would not recommend this hotel

On a quiet street, but easy walking to the Royal Mile and all it holds. Very helpful staff and lovely rooms. Bed was extra comfy. I was in the old section for my previous stay and think I prefer the new one, even though the older section is charming. The fire alarm going off was a rather rude awakening, but an adventure nontheless. We didn't evacuate because we felt it was a false alarm. That was silly of us. We were just above the refuse bins and could have done without the solid 10 min of beep-beep-beeping as the garbage trucks backed in to empty the bins. The breakfast buffet was delicious, but for a week's stay it was kind of the same each day. A waffle or French toast option would have been welcome one day a week.
