Staff were brilliant, breakfast excellent
Our room was on the top floor, long climb up, will know next time
Liked the location, views and atmosphere in hotel. We also had dinner in Empire room, which overall was good, & lovely breakfast in morning with good choice on breakfast bar. Comfy bed too.
they have a limited menu for dinner and some options had run out - didn't impact us but some other customers weren't so happy. Again didn't impact us and in fact we like the quirkiness but for some older travellers avoid the upper deck rooms as there are a lot of stairs!
Excellent location and an easy relaxed atmosphere
Location - wonderful view of harbour from our top floor room Excellent restaurant in basement Breakfast
Small size of breakfast room meant possible wait Wi-Fi was patchy in our top floor room but Ok everywhere else
Great atmosphere Excellent location with harbour views Very friendly Staff
Location over looking harbour, good bus connections to surrounding towns, spotless thoroughout the hotel, excellent breakfast and service,
Perhaps we were in a smaller room but would like the chance of two chairs rather than just one .I know there is a lounge to use but when you are located four houses along from main hotel it's not really that practical to use.rooms located to rear of building need a half net curtain or blind of some sort to give a bit of privacy
This was our second visit to the hotel and it was as excellent as our first. Friendly and efficient staff, beautiful room overlooking the harbour, delicious dinner and breakfast . Looking forward to our next visit.
the room was fantastically designed and pleasant, a very nice selection of books! shower and toilet were comfortable, and the bed was great. also- we got the room with a view to the harbor which was a great thing to look at in the morning!
the curtain in the room doesn't block all the light, and in 5-6 AM when u wish to sleep until even 8 this is a problem.
small room on top floor
Staff were friendly and helpful. Tastefully decorated rooms in keeping with the period property. Over bath TV was a great touch, although we didn't use it. Breakfast selection was good and the evening meal in restaurant was superb. Would love to stay again.
No lift available which could prove inconvenient for some though it was not a problem to us.
Friendly cheerful staff, good breakfast, good location and nicely decorated. Ground floor facilities good.
Size of bedroom and bathroom far too small. However, comfortable bed and a good nights sleep.
Fairly quiet at night in rear facing room. Breakfast not bad.
Antediluvian furniture. Uncomfortable beds. Dirty walls and carpet and toilet kept blocking. Family room very small.
The breakfast was good
I did not think that would have to carry my luggage up three flights of stairs to get to my very small room.
Lovely living room(Not private), Kind staff, Free snacks and cheese, Comfortable bed
hotel atmosphere and excellent room
Excellent accommodation. Very comfortable Particularly friendly and helpful
Comfortable bed friendly approachable hotel manager who appears to take pride in his role.
The owner/s did not present themselves personally. Greeted by hotel manager instead. Prefer to be personally greeted by owners when staying in a private (unchained) hotel/b&B. Waiting to be seated for breakfast!!! Cleanliness of room upon arrival
Clean and comfortable room, everything I needed was in it. The staff - wonderful people. Amazing views from my room. All the art work, the vinyl records, magazines, books, furnishings, nick-naks, honesty bar, the courtyard garden, the breakfasts - huge choice of everything. The cheese board available every night from 10pm at no extra cost. All the public areas - wonderful. Help to get my luggage up and down 48 steps. The pure quirkiness of the place, it has real personality. Closeness to the bus route and town.
There's no lift so to my top floor room meant 48 steps for me, the last flight being very steep. The lack of parking, once you have a spot on the street (free of charge) stay in it for the duration and use the bus. Hotel car park would only hold four cars at the most and the two in front would block the two at the back.
Good service & very helpful also great selection of food for breakfast
view from back of hotel
Breakfast, staff, location
Dirty room and shower, needs to be repainted, quite expensive
Although we found a parking space. Parking in General was very poor and there were no spaces left in hotel carpark
Style of hotel. Staff. Cleanliness. Breakfast. Location
Quirky place with interesting artefacts lots if books etc
My room was at the top of the busing with several flights of very steep stairs view was over roof tops at the back of the hotel and overlooked some fairly run down properties Breakfast was am issue as there are simply not enough tables and Seats for the number of guests replenishment of the buffet food was slow and I had to make my own tea from an urn and the water was not boiling hence the tea was not very good the breakfast staff were over worked and too busy to give the service I would expect for £100.00 per night more than I pay for a. 4 star hotel in many other locations
We loved the location, the decor and the comfortable public rooms, the generous drink making facilities and the comfortable mattress on the bed.The shower was great and there was plenty of hot water. The breakfast selection was excellent and the staff on duty unfailingly helpful. We would definitely stay here again.
Our room was small, but to be fair we knew from the reviews that that would probably be the case. The duvet was beautifully thick and fluffy, but was just too hot for mid August and no alternative was available. Our TV controller was taken away because it didn't work but never reappeared during our four night stay.
We had a double room on the top floor with a sea view, and it was a fantastic view of the marina and out to sea. The room was very pleasantly decorated with a subtle seaside theme. The bed was supremely comfortable, a good firm mattress with a soft top, and feather pillows. The tea making area was generously supplied with a large selection of different tea bags, and there was also a coffee maker with selection of coffees. The breakfast dining room was lovely, very pleasantly decorated, with a sea view, and the breakfast was superb - cooked to order, plus a huge selection of self-service extras, everything was high quality. The hotel's own website was very honest about the size of the rooms and the stairs to climb, so that was appreciated and useful when deciding which room to book - so we were prepared for a lot of stair climbing, and it was worth it for the view and the bigger room. As other reviewers have mentioned, if you book an Upper Deck room, you do have to be prepared for a lot of stair climbing, and this includes pushing open several heavily-sprung fire doors, some of which are on the very top step of the flights of stairs, so it would not be suitable for anyone who has even slight difficulty in climbing. The hotel is ideally located for walks along the sea front and into town.
Any criticisms are minor, and there was nothing which spoiled our stay: the room was generally clean enough, but some areas had been overlooked - the tea tray needed a good scrub, it was all sticky and covered in coffee grounds - and some of the soft furnishings were stained. The shower itself was fine, with excellent water supply and temperature control, but there was no shower curtain so there was soon a puddle on the floor, and the drainage was a bit slow which led to the shower tray being an inch deep with soapy water for the duration of the shower. The 15 tog goose feather duvet would have been wonderful in the winter, but it was way too much for a warm summer night, so I removed the duvet from the cover and replaced it with the blanket which was supplied. It would be a good idea if they used thinner duvets in the summer.
