Very good,
Score from 72 reviews
This historic coaching inn dates back to before the English Civil War. Just 3 miles from Banbury, there is a traditional bar, a restaurant and rooms with free Wi-Fi overlooking the village green. The Red Lion still retains many original features, including old oak beams and stone fireplaces. Rooms each have a TV, a stereo, tea/coffee facilities and a private bathroom with a hairdryer. The restaurant was once a bakery and brewery, and now serves fine English and continental cuisine. Traditional ales and fine wines are served from the cool cellars and stone vaults. Guests at the Red Lion are only 15 miles north of historic Oxford and the spectacular Blenheim Palace. The M40 highway is less than 10 minutes away by car. Hotel Rooms: 12, Hotel Chain: Old English Inns. Most recent booking for this hotel was yesterday at 10:40 from Australia.

The stay was simply dreadful. Small room an eighth of the size of a normal bedroom. Small bed against the wall so one of us did the climbing!!!!! The bathroom was up in a converted attic with narrow stairs which was very difficult for an elderly couple to negotiate. This was not made clear on the Red Lion website. The actual stairs from the bar area was also difficult to climb. We spoke with other guests who thought the same as us. We invited guests for dinner on the Thursday evening....... Two meals were returned as not fit to eat. The waitress apologised and a small refund was given when we paid for the bill. The staff seemed to use the American expression of "You Guys" to customers.... Why? I would not recommend this hotel to anyone. Our stay was a nightmare. Dreadful from start to finish

Excellent staff. Good check-in and check-out times. Comfy, although small, single room. One of the quietest hotel rooms I've stayed in. Very good breakfast. If you miss the stated breakfast time of 8 -10 a.m. you can still have a cooked breakfast (no juice or cereal etc.) until noon. Very good idea. The village of Adderbury is a gem. Well worth an hour's walk round the quaint streets to admire the beautiful houses and lovely front gardens. Shower room a bit too small. Difficult to use the wash basin. Upstairs accommodation in need of redecoration and some replastering. Needs a "wow" factor.

The staff were very friendly and relaxed. There was a slight problem with the boiler on the first day, which didn't really cause us any problems, but they reduced my bill by £50!! There were also a lot of free lattes and excellent beers.

We booked a late availability special deal which was excellent value and suited our purpose for a visit to Oxford and visiting friends in the area. From booking in until leaving the service, friendliness and courtesy was excellent and we were very impressed by the efficiency of the staff. The Red Lion is obviously a very wellrun and managed hotel and we will certainly be returning in the future, Joyce Henderson

Value for money and reasonably priced food and drink with a good choice to select from It would be diffilult to negotiate stairs and interlinking fire doors for less able people.

The staff were all very pleasant. The lack of a functioning hot water supply in the shower room basin was not appreciated. The general feeling about the place was 'heavily used faux olde-worlde style, tired and in need of a refurb'.

We thoughtthe staff were fantastic, especially the young blond girl who semed to be doing a "million " things at once, she was wonderful and an asset to the hotel. We asked her to compliment the Chef for us as our Evening meal and our breakfast were excellent. The accomadation was a little dated.

Very little, except the convenience of the location. However, in view of the number of complaints we had, they were quick to reduce our bill, to compensate, even though we cut short our intended 3 night stay, to just 2. Our "Superior double room" was in need of a thorough refurbishment. Scarred & shipped furniture, with tired, unimaginative decor. Restaurant food was largely microwaved, and when we complained about it, we were told "Well, we are part of Greene King!" Breakfasts were adequate, although the size of my kipper fillet was so small that the lemon slice' on top' hid half of it. We found that the spare blanket, from the wardrobe, was heavily stained, dirty & unusable, but the final straw was when we noticed that the freshly laundered duvet cover wasn't fully fastened at the foot. When we looked inside we found the duvet itself was very heavily stained, and absolutely filthy. We checked out immediately. Significantly, reception apologised for the duvet and said they were ordering a new one, from Greene King immediately. What, without checking our complaint? It left us thinking that they were aware of this well before they let the room to us. If this is the "Superior" double room, what must other guests have been tolerating?

The staff were very helpful and accommodation was very clean. We were in the attic room which was very spacious and quiet. The stairs leading to the accommodation were steep and narrow which if you are not fit could be a problem ! I think they could have supplied tissues in the room as it was a long and winding way back down to reception!

The room was very clean and the bed extremely comfortable. The food was of a high standard and the choice of evening meals was excellent. The bar kept a varied selection of ales and the wine we chose with the evening meals was very good. The staff were very helpful and attentive and made our stay very pleasurable. The location of the Red Lion was ideally situated for our visits to Waddesdon Manor and Upton House.

The room with the four poster bed. The bed was amazing and so comfortable. Lunch was fine however the evening meal in the dining restaurant was very poor quality and we waited far too long in an empty restaurant!

Lots of old world charm just watch the low beams. Large and very comfortable bed . Nice to find a proper sized bath tub. Excellent selection of food on the menu and resonably priced. Quick and cheerful staff in dinning room. Food arrives hot and tastes wonderful. No parking spaces had to park on the other side of the green.
