Red Lion HotelThe Green, OX17 3NG Banbury (Show map) Very good, Score from 59 reviewsThis historic coaching inn dates back to before the English Civil War. Just 3 miles from Banbury, there is a traditional bar, a restaurant and rooms with free Wi-Fi overlooking the village green. The Red Lion still retains many original features, including old oak beams and stone fireplaces. Rooms each have a TV, a stereo, tea/coffee facilities and a private bathroom with a hairdryer. The restaurant was once a bakery and brewery, and now serves fine English and continental cuisine. Traditional ales and fine wines are served from the cool cellars and stone vaults. Guests at the Red Lion are only 15 miles north of historic Oxford and the spectacular Blenheim Palace. The M40 highway is less than 10 minutes away by car. Hotel Rooms: 12, Hotel Chain: Old English Inns.

Very little, except the convenience of the location. However, in view of the number of complaints we had, they were quick to reduce our bill, to compensate, even though we cut short our intended 3 night stay, to just 2. Our "Superior double room" was in need of a thorough refurbishment. Scarred & shipped furniture, with tired, unimaginative decor. Restaurant food was largely microwaved, and when we complained about it, we were told "Well, we are part of Greene King!" Breakfasts were adequate, although the size of my kipper fillet was so small that the lemon slice' on top' hid half of it. We found that the spare blanket, from the wardrobe, was heavily stained, dirty & unusable, but the final straw was when we noticed that the freshly laundered duvet cover wasn't fully fastened at the foot. When we looked inside we found the duvet itself was very heavily stained, and absolutely filthy. We checked out immediately. Significantly, reception apologised for the duvet and said they were ordering a new one, from Greene King immediately. What, without checking our complaint? It left us thinking that they were aware of this well before they let the room to us. If this is the "Superior" double room, what must other guests have been tolerating?

Very warm welcome, attentive staff, good food, real country pub atmosphere. Not a complaint but something to consider, our room was on split levels, bedroom downstairs, bathroom upstairs but no door to separate the two levels so toilet time not private! Ok if you are not in the early stages of a relationship! (Not all rooms are like this!)

With the right staff serving, the service was excellent: friendly, warm and professional. The food was very good and the wine and beer excellent. Lack of attention to deatil in checking the rooms. Depending on the satff on duty, service can vary.

Very comfortable, nice staff, lovely food. Our bedroom, although very nice, was on the ground floor next to the stair, when anyone used the stair we thought they were coming into the room beside us! Breakfast was a bit sparce, no juice or jam/marmalade for the toast. We would happily have paid a bit more for a proper 'Full English'

The breakfast was excellent. The building is lovely - very old. The shower facility in the bath was not great. There was nowhere to hang the shower head on the wall so you had to hold it all the time.

The staff are very friendly and certainly looked after me very well without being intrusive. The food was all very good, probably better than I had expected. I felt that the accommodation at the Red Lion could do with some refurbishment, for example the stair area is rather shabby and the carpet in my room could do with replacing as it is torn near the bathroom. I am not sure if there are any ground floor bedrooms but if not, it is not accessible for anyone with any mobility challenges. I was also rather surprised that a new waiter started at dinner with what appeared to be no planning - just thrust on the one waitress on duty which she was not aware of. Needless to say he just walked out!

All staff were efficient, welcoming and friendly, without being over-familiar. Our room was extremely small for a double. A difficulty was caused by the shower cubicle having nowhere to stand soap or shower gel. The narrow, winding stairs could cause problems for older people less mobile than we and perhaps this should be pointed out in the description of the hotel.

The staff were all very pleasant. The lack of a functioning hot water supply in the shower room basin was not appreciated. The general feeling about the place was 'heavily used faux olde-worlde style, tired and in need of a refurb'.

We thoughtthe staff were fantastic, especially the young blond girl who semed to be doing a "million " things at once, she was wonderful and an asset to the hotel. We asked her to compliment the Chef for us as our Evening meal and our breakfast were excellent. The accomadation was a little dated.

We had a very pleasant stay at The Red Lion Hotel - the breakfasts and evening meals were exceptionally good and the staff were all very friendly and helpful. We were accommodated in a lovely large oak-beamed bedroom with stone walls and feature fireplace. The window box outside was full of geraniums which added a pleasing splash of colour.

The room was very clean and the bed extremely comfortable. The food was of a high standard and the choice of evening meals was excellent. The bar kept a varied selection of ales and the wine we chose with the evening meals was very good. The staff were very helpful and attentive and made our stay very pleasurable. The location of the Red Lion was ideally situated for our visits to Waddesdon Manor and Upton House.

The Hotel was excellent, we've stayed in grand hotels with swanky restaurants and spa's, but we think that this is the best hotel that we've stayed in. The staff were really friendly, the room was comfortable, and best of all we didn't have noisy guests passing our door late at night. We would definately return.

Lots of old world charm just watch the low beams. Large and very comfortable bed . Nice to find a proper sized bath tub. Excellent selection of food on the menu and resonably priced. Quick and cheerful staff in dinning room. Food arrives hot and tastes wonderful. No parking spaces had to park on the other side of the green.

“I loved everything about The Red Lion. The staff were amazingly friendly towards me and my dog who was made to feel as welcome as I was! Food was excellent and everywhere was spotlessly clean. Very cute cosy rooms and very nice bathrooms. I was booked in to stay for one evening but ended up staying two! Hoping to go back again in January. Felt like one of the locals, who were so so friendly.” Jo, Maidstone |
