Its location (nearness) to Tunbridge Wells Town Centre. The fact it had a car park. Its price compared with other local hostelries. The whole building was very 'tired'. Shabby outside, worn paintwork and walls inside and threadbare carpets on stairs and in hallways. In some places, such was the worn state of the carpet on the stairs, that it was really dangerous. In some places on the stairs there was not even a handrail. Although I am in my 60's and suffer with an arthritic hip, I was not given a choice of rooms and yes, you've probably guessed already, the room we were given was on the very top floor. There was no lift available nor were we offerred assistance with our cases. I lost count of the flights of stairs that we had to manage. Was it five, six or even seven ? Breakfast was good, although the staff took ages to clear away used dishes etc. Consequently when we arrived for breakfast, although there were many tables in the dining room, there was not a lot of choice as to where to sit. There were no other guests eating and the dining room looked like a bomb had hit it with all the used cups and saucers, plates, cutlery and uneaten food etc. still laying about. Overall, a reasonably comfortable and affordable hotel, well situated for T-Wells Town Centre, but clearly with no frills at all !! Concerning the next question....I would recommend this hotel to other travellers.............................. once it was tidied up and re-furbished !!

I like that I could park the car easily and that it was minutes away from the shops with an excellent French restaurant within walking distance. The lighting in the room was not brilliant and the decor was dated.

I had a lovely room on the top floor. It was away from other guests so very quiet which I liked. The decor was nice and the bed was comfortable. Plenty of space for clothes. Good flat screen tv with good reception. Good sized bathroom with lots of hot water. Big kettle with tea, coffee and hot chocolate. Nice view over the city. The location of the hotel is excellent just a couple of minutes from the town centre. The breakfast was very good, hot cooked to order. The staff were lovely. This isn't a boutique hotel but I really like it for its location and price. The decor downstairs is a bit tired and 5 floors without a lift.

It wqs a clean comfortable convenient place to stay and I would stay there again. Wondered why the bar wasn't open though. No evening meal available, and bar not open. Seemed to be mainly business/travelling types staying.

The Russell did exactly what it said on the box. It was friendly, comfortable, good value, unpretentious - a little shabby, maybe, but that was rather charming - in a fantastic location and I'd stay there again any time.

We liked the location as it was very close to the city centre. It had a very English feel. We were allowed to leave our car in the car park to go into town after we checked out. That was a big bonus!

The beds and pillows were really nice, comfortable, cosy. We believe we got value for many. The hotel definitely needed upgrading. The bath rooms were clean however the shower seemed to be at least 20 years old the sealant and grouting were worn. The coffee at breakfast time was substandard, the cheapest kind, I've never tasted coffee like it.

Convenient location and (limited) parking. Comfortable (but slightly unloved) rooms. No bar or restaurant (but close enough to many choices). Felt a bit down at heel, but clean & comfortable enough. Would recommend for those with minimal needs looking for good value and happy to climb lots of stairs.

I was pleasantly surprised by the Russell Hotel. Its a 2 star and I wasn't expecting much. The location was good, very near to town and sites. The bed was very comfortable, the bath and shower good with lots of hot water. Nice flat screen tv with fair number of channels. The room was a good size with comfy armchair. I was on the top floor so no heavy feet from above, I was at the back so no traffic noise. Very little noise from other guests as there was only one more room at the top. The breakfast was good, cereal, fresh toast, juices, lots of butter and jam. Full English cooked for you not self service was very good. Be sure to go down early as can get very crowded later on. The only thing that spoiled the Russell was the decor, it was terrible. Really tasteless and old.

Very shabby and dated. Initlally I was shown to a "suite" which was in a creepy annexe. They willingly moved me to another room which was much better, located in the main hotel.

Its central location and free parking were great at the end of the day to park up and walk to local pubs and restaurants (strongly recommend the nearby Sankers pub for good beer and warm ambience). The hook on the back of the bathroom door fell off as soon as I hung my bath towel on it and it was never fixed during my stay.

The mini suite in the annex was big, well furnished and well equipped. It was good to be able to relax in the evening watching a large TV seated on a sofa with plenty of room. The staff were very friendly. Breakfast was good. The location of hotel is just a couple of minutes from the main shopping area, with pubs and restaurants around the corner. The car park was an asset as the surrounding streets have parking restrictions. I would happily stay here again. Nothing to comment on.
