Set in a 100-year-old townhouse in historic Canterbury, this hostel is a 15-minute walk from the magnificent cathedral. It has free Wi-Fi, and there is free parking at nearby Nunnery Fields.
Score from 144 reviews Fabulous
Situated within the Roman city walls of historic Canterbury’s centre, this family-run hotel dates back to the 16th century. It offers free Wi-Fi, an à la carte restaurant, and a cosy, oak-beamed bar.

Excellent value for money See a uni campus from inside and savour the atmosphere Tea and coffee making facilities in room Full English or continental breakfast included
Very simply furnished rooms W-LAN difficult to implement Not within walking distance of city centre or shops/restaurants
Safety Cleaniness Delightful surroundings privacy
the effort of getting to and from city but used my travel card for bus and walked
The fire alarm went off at around midnight, during the sleep. Everybody had to evacuate and stay outside for 20 minutes ! Either the system is not in good working order or some students smoke in the rooms!!! Very disappointed and bad marks.
It was in a silent green place, though quite far from the heart of the city, breakfast was very good
Well organised with good helpful. staff. Breakfast included. Free parking. Convenient for Dover. Good value
A little far from the city and no en suite. But that is reflected in the price.
Spacious single room Well equipped Quiet Good breakfast.
Geography of the college is hard to work out at first. Nearest shower was cold, one further along corridor was fine. Loos on the corridor don't have a washbasin. Breakfast starts a bit late when starting work at 8.45am
Had a grest time staying here. Facilities were great and comfortable with private toilet and shower.
Personally I found the mattress a little hard but had a good nights sleep. Also found the key fobs a little fiddly.
The views overlooking Canterbury, as always, especially with the Cathedral lit up at night. So much has changed over the years with the expansion of the campus, and for the better; also with the main colleges and Senate, Library etc., being recognisable, I was able to re-live the wonderful years I had at Kent Uni.
Just a simple couple of things which might help, I hope. Explaining to the guest, at Reception, how the key fob works would have been a kindness - even with the written instructions already provided, as trying to handle my cases and then not knowing what to do required my returning to Reception to ask! A second pillow would be really appreciated - perhaps I should have asked; not sure! And a selection of breads and preparations of eggs (rather than just fried) would have helped make a good selection of breakfast offerings that much better. None of the above marred my stay - but may help to shift the experience from 'good' to 'very good'.
Receptionist was excellent. Room was comfortable and clean. Good value for money.
Trying to find my room. Very confusing getting around inside the college.
comfortable room tea facilities wi-fi in room good dining facilities spare glass in room good toiletries
no map of college no toast at breakfast shower a bit tatty
Simple no frills room reflected in price. Quiet room go a good nights sleep.
Communal shower. Unhealthy breakfast offfered.
Near historic city and some beautiful countryside.
Very clean room
Toilet, shower and sink were separate
very nice stay, food was good aswell
I came here to stay 2 nights for my graduation and I had a better room and services compared to when I lived at Rutherford College few years back. It was a nice & familiar environment and I enjoyed the quietness in my corridor.
It is Beautiful located, the room clean and nice and the breakfast was generous. I would recommended it my friends.
A better map and notice when you book where Rutherford college is located. I walked around for over 30 minutes to find it and the reception. Partlly my own fault, but it would be helpful with a notice when yoy book.
The Breakfast was very Good.
The location was not good. Had to ask the member of staff where the room was as could not find it, it was a rabbit warren.
The grounds were really nice and the rooms were very clean and comfortable even if a little basic. The English breakfast was well equipped and I enjoyed mine and most importantly the sausages weren't made of oats.
I used my Sat Nav to walk but the path it lead me on was closed and even when I met up with it, I ended up going in a rear entrance and not finding my way to main reception. Not so much an issue with the college but it would have been nice if it was a bit clearer or marked out somewhere online but I phoned the number and they tracked exactly where I was and guided me.
The smell in the room next to toilet. Awful! Sleeping with wide open window helped a little
The beautiful and calm location; the view down over the cathedral.
The grounds are very scenic and pleasant to walk around and the University has excellent facilities, such as cafes, dining halls, a shop and a cinema. My room was excellent value for money and not having an en suite bathroom wasn't an issue as there was hardly anyone else around. The breakfasts and evening meals were very good and it also was very easy to get to Canterbury and to towns such as Whitstable and Herne Bay.
Although the lady who booked me in and checked me out was friendly and helpful, some of the staff, especially the dining staff, were unhelpful and a little rude. They seem to be more used to dealing with students than with paying guests and I was a told off a couple of times for inadvertently doing the wrong thing, which isn't how I expected to be treated as a paying customer.
Location was good - away from the main part of town but within walk-able distance. There is also a regular bus service. Food was good and there is a theatre on campus as well as a variety of shops and places to eat. The dining room where breakfast was served looked to serve dinners as well, but I never used it at that time. There are basic facilities for the rooms to make food - Microwave, Fridge and Kettle, just need to bring cutlery and plates.
Breakfast could start earlier - would have made my mornings less rushed - breakfast starts at 7.45, I needed to leave at 8 in the morning. This resulted in a rushed breakfast, especially if there was a queue. The rooms are only for single occupants within this building - so unable to travel as part of a couple. Perhaps this facility is available in other buildings?
Everything. The Receptionist even found a room for me, despite me booking the wrong weekend. The room is basic, but is fine for one or two nights. The breakfast is buffet style and really is an all you can eat type. All of the staff are friendly and helpful. The grounds are really very nice and if you want to go for a stroll, that's fine. Go for a bike ride, is also fine with cycle paths in abundance.
The Campus is at the top of a hill and it's a fair old climb to get back up that hill on your bike from Canterbury.
Facilities were excellent for my needs as a student. Vastly exceeded expectations.
