The breakfast was really good, a beautifully cooked full English, our anything else you fancied on their menu. My friend said their scrambled eggs were good, and that's quite hard to do well in a hotel. Served fast and in a friendly way. The ground floor, easy-access twin room was pleasant and well-maintained, with a spacious shower room. The owner gave us the use of the parking space outside the front door instead of us having to use the car park around the corner (the hotel is in the historic centre of Shrewsbury), because both I and my friend have M.E. so we can't carry suitcases very far, even on wheels. We really appreciated this, and found the hotel to be very good for people with mild to medium-severity M.E. The only little irritation was that the shower-room basin has a glass shelf so close above it that it's hard to clean your teeth into the basin without spitting onto the floor! Otherwise, everything was fine.

This is the 3rd year we have stayed at Sandford House so we like it. Kerry was on holiday this year and we hope they had a good one. It is the first time we were put in the new building, room 18, one of several 1st floor rooms. 18 was really too small to be a double, hardly room to move around, would not have liked more nights there. We saw the downstairs rooms on Tues morning and they are fine, roomy doubles, we'll have one of them next year. In 18 contortions were needed to plug the kettle in, on the wall, under the dressing table, we moved it to the bedside lamp socket - at floor level - not convenient for pouring. However, moans over, we will still return, breakfast is good and they found us some porridge which is not usual fare at the Sandford. We still like it a lot.

Firstly, forget the "hotel" tag, Sandford House is firmly in B & B territory, and not scoring highly there, either. The location is excellent, being close to Shrewsbury's English Bridge and thus a one minute walk from the Severn River's leafy promenade which (almost) encircles this richly rewarding town. Our other "good" rating is for room cleanliness, and the en suite also pleased, if you forgive water pressure variations caused by other occupants and measly toiletries. Everything else we could only rate "fair".The bed was comfortable but awful foam pillows are really unforgiveable. Thin curtains woke us around 4.00am daily, but we had no complaints concerning noise - we were in the annexe and distanced from the main building, which faces a busy pub. Luckily it did not rain on the mornings we had to walk over for breakfast. There is no parking on site. Visitors by car must use the riverside open carpark - £4 daily 8.00am to 6.00pm - which the Sandford website says is at 50 metres distant. At least double that when the popular near section has filled, so no fun when loading suitcases whether wet or dry, as there is no possibility of stopping outside in the busy narrow lane with double yellow-lines. Breakfast in a modest, pleasant room is available for only one hour 8.00-9.00 and is B & B at its basic - the single juice, the depressing Lego stack of Kelloggs boxes, the fry-up. No fruit, no yoghurt, no continental option. Cooked well (except the poached egg request) but little scope to ring the changes. All the Sandfords' shortcomings would be forgiven if the breakfast experience had been better, but it was presided over by a proprietor who is loud and overbearing. His verbal treatment of a kitchen assistant, no doubt for our amusement, was at one point boorish verging on something worse. A response by us that we prefer coffee later in the breakfast rather then upfront brought on similar playing to the gallery. "I've got a system, me, and if that system's messed up...."etc for a grandstanding two minutes. Put us in our place. "The card machine is out of order" we and earlier arrivals were told. We were asked to settle in cash which showed amazing foresight as, indeed, the machine was still out of order when we left. Well, a pound for every time we've heard that. The impression persists that the Sandford operates for the proprietors' convenience.

No-nonsense but comfortable. Staff were very friendly and polite! Breakfast was probably a bit early (8-9am on a Sunday) but that was a minor gripe and it was my own fault for missing it because I was so hungover...

Central location, quiet and relaxing breakfast satisfactory. Poor welcome, door locked with specific instructions to ring bell only once, however it took four rings of the bell and a considerable wait for someone to answer. Reception was abrupt and seemed to lack front of house staff.
