Set in the historic market town of Newark, this Victorian residence has been carefully refurbished to provide a modern 3-star hotel and restaurant, while still retaining many of its original features....
Score from 108 reviews Excellent
Staff polite and helpful
The heating didn't work properly so it was very cold
The location provided great access to local shops and restaurants.
Located at the top of the building, the floor boards in my room were incredibly creaky and made an immense noise every time you moved around the room.
The style and historic links which was so very English with regards past visitors. It felt as though we had been part of that link. The hotel standards, staff, decoration, food and location were second to none. Thank you all.
Really superb food.
Convenient, town centre location Free parking Lovely restaurant Good bar meals Tasteful décor Friendly staff Affordable
Not much to dislike
The rooms and the lounge in particular were lovely - very cosy and warm. The 2 course dinner option was good value and the food and presentation was excellent.
Breakfast not being available until 8am on Saturday - we had to leave by 8am. The chef did quickly cook us very nice hot breakfasts as soon as he arrived though which was much appreciated.
Staff were genuinely friendly, the room in the more recent extension was comfortable and warm.. Enjoyed the evening meal we selected, and breakfast was tasty, all in all a great stay in a hotel that I would happily recommend and return to.
On arrival our heating and television was not working, once reported all was sorted immediately - thank you. Breakfast was fab. All in all a very pleasant overnight stay.
We arrived on a Sunday and sadly the restaurant wasn't open but food was available in the bar which proved to be just fine.
The hotel has loads of history that was of great interest to me. We actually stayed in the room were King Charles 1st spent his last night before being carted off to London for execution.
The dining room is beautiful.
The bar area needs a renovation and cleaned up a bit. Car park very very iced over. Desperately needed gritting when we stayed. We slid literally into the hotel, very dangerous. But over all we love Saracens Head.
The hotel position and the friendliness of the staff.
The TV would not work very well. After I asked for new batteries it worked with very limited stations (two) and went off after a few minutes. There was no heating in the room and it became very uncomfortable to sit. The temperature was good for sleeping but insufficient for relaxing.
a good evening meal
It was very cold as the heating broke down. There was no lift. The wifi did not work.
Nice room, fabulous location, right near the wonderful Southwell Minster. Beautiful building
Lovely, friendly staff. Cosy restaurant and bar. A 'one-off' hotel, not part of a chain.
The snow and ice between the hotel and car park was not cleared and was rather dangerous. TV worked only intermittently. Only one pillow on each bed. Heating not working until after 8am on a very cold morning
Historical aspects, staff
Bar closed fairly early
noisy water pipes, creaking floor boards, rooms too warm
ambiance in restaurant and beakfast.
WiFi and remote control on tv. not working. Wake up call too late.
This is potentially a beautiful, historical building. The panneled dining room is a treat.
Totally overpriced for poorly trained and motivated staff. Locals take over the TV in the bar for their own pleasure. The furniture in the bedroom was poorly thought out and mismatched. The bathroom fan was broken so there was mold on the ceiling and steam wouldn't clear. This is a building of historical importance and the current owners need to do a lot better.
Excellent position for my purpose which involved a visit to the cathedral and some last minute christmas shopping.Staff were pleasant and welcoming, and breakfast was well cooked. Room was available until 11am On departure morning.
Staff were cheerful and chatty.
On a col night, the room was warm but airless due to poor ventilation. Towel rail dangerously hot. The bath needs a grab rail to assist in access to the deep bath.
The guest lounge
At timed service in the bar was slow and a member of staff had to be found
upgraded for free to four poster room for our two night stay :-) bar cosy with fire hotel was grand and old staff accommodating and helpful
one of the staff a bit eccentric- obviously thinks if breakfast is til 9am, it ends and 9am sharp , so turned all the lights off!! Hilarious .
The surroundings and decor and ease of parking. Breakfast was good. Helpfulness of one male member of staff about leaving our car parked while we attended a funeral at the Minster Lovely hot water in bathroom.
Rudeness of the manager and one female member of staff. Badly c ooked food at dinner. No room service although offered in brochure.
excellent location and pretty good value for money
wi fi slower than an England defender, bar area needs attention as it has no atmosphere at all and they stopped serving at 10.30 even for residents!
The staff were very friendly. Room was comfortable but lighting was inadequate for reading and the occasional chair was not very comfortable. Food excellent. Well done
