The four star rating overstates the hotel a little, just because it is a shared venue with a restaurant/pub so the check-in area is very basic (but sufficiently nice) and the entry hallway to the rooms feels a little old and makeshift. I think this is why there are some bad reviews. I would personally call it a 3.5 star hotel (but I am no expert). However the place is clean and pleasant, the rooms are nice - it's just the check-in counter and hallway that don't really feel 4-star. If you aren't too pish posh about it, it's really a lovely place with lots of local character and hospitality.
Two suggestions for the owners:
i) Put the wifi password in the guest booklet in the room (it was only at the check-in counter and I couldn't remember the password when I got to my room which was a bit of a walk away)
ii) Give clearer directions to the parking (you kind of have to loop around the back to find it). If possible put up a luminous sign on the junction between High Street and the side roads (checkers lane?) leading to the parking. I only managed to find the parking because the rental agency guy happened to live right behind the hotel before, and showed me how to get there on google maps. Even despite that it was hard to find in the dark because when you drive on the road the restaurant is too close to the road to see the name and there is absolutely nowhere to stop right outside the hotel on the main road.
Nicely decorated and furnished rooms like a 4 star hotel. Good casual restaurant/pub downstairs, fantastic ale, good food and friendly service. One of the closest towns you can stay to to Stansted airport (15 min drive max). The same friendly staff seem to run the restaurant and hotel so I took a little while to check in because I came at peak dinner time, but the gentleman who checked me in was very nice and kind and even offered to have someone make me a continental breakfast and coffee at 4:30am because I had to catch a 7am flight (major compliments for this, it was quite the selection, thank you!). Free parking. Decent wifi. Comfy bed. Very quiet despite being above a restaurant (can't hear the restaurant at all). Lots of character being in a little local town (which is pleasant and safe) and above a local restaurant/tavern. FYI I rented a car to stay here overnight because it was cheaper than taking a taxi two ways to/from Stansted. Overall I was glad I spent a night here.
