This is a challenge to answer. The Scotch Arms is a lovely 1600s building(s) that was incredibly well restored. (My partner is an architect, and he said the owners spared no expense in the restoration.) It was a delight to be in such a beautiful treasure of a B&B. The question is difficult to answer because complimenting the wonderful physical establishment is, Dianne, the warm, friendly and knowledgeable owner/host. She gives everyone a warm welcome. On this trip we are staying at 7 hotels/B&Bs, and the Scotch Arms stays in our minds as one of the best on this 20 day trip.

Located in Brampton, the Grade II listed family-run Scotch Arms Mews Bed & Breakfast features 7 rooms with attached bathroom. Also on offer to all guests is ample free parking in the property's on-site car park, access to laundry facilities and free WiFi throughout. Each contemporary room includes a TV, a seating area and tea and coffee making facilities. In the larger rooms in the main buildings there is a work desk. The en-suite shower rooms have a hairdryer. Each morning guests can choose from a buffet breakfast including fresh fruit salad, cereals, breads, homemade muesli, bacon, coffees and juices. Guests can relax in the shared lounge, with its ancient salt oven and well. Local activities include fishing, golfing, walking or boating. Carlisle Castle is a 15-minute drive away. Guests have access to outside secure storage with a bike rack and a bicycle pump.

The Scotch Arms Mews was purchased in 2013 by Colin and myself who have lived in Brampton for over 20 years. Over 9 months, this Grade II listed property was extensively renovated to provide a high standard of accommodation for our guests. During our renovations we found a salt oven and a well, which were very rare in past times. These are on display within our lounge where our guests can relax after a long day in front of our log burner or out on our patio. We throughly enjoy running our Bed & Breakfast and are ideally placed for walkers venturing along Hadrian's Wall, cyclists taking part in certain cycle routes, bikers taking in our fantastic roads and guests travelling north to south or east to west looking for an enjoyable stop over. We offer free on site hard stand parking to our guests, along with laundry facilities and cycle storage if required. A packed lunch can also be arranged with prior notice. Our B&B is nestled within the small market town of Brampton and benefit's from on site parking. Within the town centre there is a lovely selection of gift shops, coffee shops, bistro's and newsagents along with a tourist information centre, restaurants, pubs and takeaways We are only a short taxi ride away from Hadrian's Wall. So a comfortable stopover with ourselves is nice and easy before returning back to the wall the following morning. Talkin Tarn Country Park lies close to Brampton. There is a 65 acre lake set amid 120 acres of farmland and woodland. The tarn is an ideal place for active recreation or a quiet stroll through the mature woodlands. Alternatively, for younger guests head up to the nearby Trout Fishing Park and try your hand or Walby Farm Park is a 10 minute drive towards Carlisle which is an award winning all weather attraction for families. For those who enjoy shopping, Carlisle boosts The Lanes undercover shopping centre with many well know stores and an undercover Victorian Market, lies close to Carlisle's Historic Quarter where you will find the Castle, Cathedral and the award winning Tullie House.
