Food in restaurant very good (breakfast and dinner, 3 course menu, main restaurant) Good pool facilities. Lovely grounds and settting Quality of room was disappointing for a quality hotel. The fixtures and fittings need some attention eg toilet roll loose on wall, rickety wardrobe door, sliding bathroom door. Beds too soft, noisy over- laundered sheets and poor quality pillows that come round over your ears when you lie on them like marshmallows ( if you know what I mean) The walks in the ground need some signposting - we did the purple and there are no signs.

Using the spa facilities. The emergency Fire Door on the ground floor was padlocked - this is against the law. The hotel decor is very dark - along with the lighting. Booking.com had not confirmed my reservation with the hotel.

Excellent. A bit cold as the heating in the room wasn't working and they couldn't fix it, find a freestanding heater or move us to another double room. Admittedly, we didn't realise there was a problem until after midnight and they did offer us a move to a twin.

The accommodation was excellent. The extortionate price of drinks, food was also expensive for what it was. You did not actually see much of the old hall as most of the facilities are housed in new additions to the building. Quite remote.

Friendly and helpful staff. We went to a wedding which was beautifully catered for. I booked through Booking.com because I wasn't able to get wedding discounted room through Slayley itself /unhelpful / rude staff on phone when I tried to book. Actually told me I'd get an inferior room if I booked through a third party which actually did seem to be the case it wasn't one of the refurbished rooms other wedding guests got. Telephone staff at Slayley actually told me I'd get an inferior room if I booked through a third party which actually did seem to be the case it wasn't one of the refurbished rooms other wedding guests got.

The hotel is very nice in itself, building, facilities, location etc. However, the food and mass catering dining room are poor for a hotel that trades on being upmarket. Points: breakfast plates too hot to hold, no signage to inform of this; full English breakfast poorly cooked, scrambled eggs dried out and actually green in colour, fried eggs dry and hard, bacon soggy, sausages undercooked. All very unappetising, mass catering at its worst. Poor service, had to ask 3 times for breakfast coffee. No bread rolls, just sliced white and seeded bread. Mass catering restaurant evening meal was poor quality and service poor. We won't be coming back.

“We had a very enjoyable 2 night stay at The George Hotel. Our room was very comfortable and overlooked the river and the gardens. Our room was very clean and quite spacious. We stayed 2 nights dinner, bed and breakfast and the food was very tasty. Our evening meal consisted of a 3 course meal with a choice. Breakfast was self service and again the food was very nice. The bar was very comfortable serving refreshments during the day. I visited The George Hotel in 2007 and will definately be returning.” Jacqueline, Tyne & Wear |

“The owners are very friendly and accomodating. They raise alpacas and learning about them was a good experience. The breakfast was excellent. There was a great varity offerred and the hot items came out hot. The homemade bread was yum yum. We wish we could have stayed longer and would love to return. ” Joseph, Naples |
