Perfect place to stay!
If rooms off the street fronting the building, then very quiet. Laundry facilities on site. Can leave luggage before and after arrival. Straight forward dorm style accommodations so not luxurious but very functional.
Rooms overlooking the street may be noisy.
Clean and comfortable
No Lift. We each had to carry 2 suitcases up 3 floors! Please notify clients in advance - we would not have booked if we had known.
price location staff friendliness 24 hour reception kitchenette quiet
bathroom (teeny) didn't empty bin or change sheets or towels
Not finding the lift until the next morning - my room was on the third floor!
The staff at Start @ IQ were helpful. The hotel is conveniently located close to the Haymarket train station. The room was clean and included a functioning kitchenette.
The atmosphere is very sterile - concrete walls and long empty corridors. The hotel seems slightly understaffed - only one person working the check-in desk at a time. The whole hotel feels very much like a University Dorm room.
Leaving a booking a little late it was the cheapest venue we could find for accommodation in August. It was clean and sufficient facilities.
Wifi is not free and seems to be designed with packages for students.
The price was very expensive for basic accommodation
Had a problem with night staff and have already complained to manager
Staff were so friendly and helpful. Though a bit put off by a blonde lady in the office who appeared to be doing her make up constantly. Apart from that the staff were amazing. A real credit. Nothing too much trouble. Facilities in room everything we could have wanted. Basic. But there. Great set up for our needs. We could cook if we wanted or not. Lovely to have the option Only five mins away from haymarket tram station. Railway too obviously. £3.50 unlimited tram/Lothian bus day ticket was a bargain and a brilliant way to get about from this location.
We should have complained about this at the time but had so much on to be honest we didn't get the time and just put up with it. The extractor fan in the bathroom wasn't on when we arrived and on opening the door the smell was awful. Fan cleared it ok. But same problem every time entering bathroom as fan on timer when light goes off. Build up of smell. Couldnt leave light on as fan too noisy.
An enjoyable stay
Good shower, good (chargeable) wifi, ten minutes from Charlotte Square and twenty from George Square. Friendly staff, excellent value at Festival time.
Slowest electric hob in the world!
It was quiet, and we could relax and get a good night's sleep after a tiring day in Edinburgh. Plus we could cook a good meal and not have to be tied to restaurant food and expenses. I liked the fact the hotel wasn't in a busy street and away from a lot of pedestrian congestion. It seemed like the only tourists in the streets were ones who were going to one of the few hotels in the area. The quiet atmosphere was tremendously welcome after all the crowds along the Royal Mile and Princes Street.
There was nothing I didn't like, even the location, which was a few blocks out from the tourist center and so away from the hubbub. I was tempted to put "good" for 'value for money', but when I think of other places we've stayed in Edinburgh that are smaller with no kitchen facilities and as or more expensive to boot, I decided not to. I just had to accept the fact that Edinburgh hotels are expensive and that Smart at iQ is good value in that context.
No free wifi!
The price was right. The view was lovely with plenty of windows. The corner cafe had a great breakfast.
Wasn't clear that it is a dormitory online. Charging to store bags during breakfast after checking is a bit much.
Comfortable and spotless.
No tea or coffee.
Convenient location to stopover before moving to our other hotel. Kitchen facilities within the suite were excellent although I didn't cook.
No free WiFi therefore had to buy time through an outside source.
The staff were friendly and helpful, a young crowd, easy-going. The flat was clean and the bed comfortable. Not far from Haymarket station and about a ten minute walk to the city. A Tescoes and a cash point close by. I am straining here to reach two hundred characters of nice things to say.
I found this place to be very expensive, much more expensive than a much higher quality flat I rented in Central London three weeks later. No TV, no microwave, not even a toaster. No wifi. I considered this poor value for money and will definitely not use it again.
Clean, comfy, kitchen facilities, good shower, ensuite bathroom, lots of storage facilities. Would definitely stay there again
Location -bit of a walk from the centre
Very good location, friendly staffs and good price. It has a kitchen and the bathrooms are totally adapted.
It doesn't have tv.
I didn't find the lift until the next morning, after lugging my suitcase up three flights of stairs! Could have been signed better, or I should have asked but was too tired!
The room was clean.
No TV. Long walk into town. Limited facilities in area. Small bed pushed against the wall. Bathroom was a plastic box. Shower fell off the wall. Leaking dripping toilet. Noisy from outside. No air conditioning and couldn't open the window more than 2 cms. I didn't know this was vacated student accommodation and not a hotel of sorts.
room, location, kitchen, shower, friendly helpful staff
only criticism is too much use of cleaning fluids, very strong throughout!
I was in Edinburgh for the Festival. I was on my last week of holiday form from Vancouver. The IQ was in walking distance of all festival events and tourist attractions, yet far enough away for a quiet stay. The rooms were clean and efficient and the kitchen was clean and fairly well equipped. I liked that everything was new: the walk in shower; the desk, shelves and drawers gave a spacious feel; the single bed was nice and wide; an overhead light had switches righter by the bed; the windows were large and opened to let in fresh air while staying secure.
Noise from the hallway echoed and amplified in the rooms. I would have liked a toaster, a hairdryer and a kettle in my room.
No complaints. It was Edinburgh Festival and Commonwealth games. How lucky to find a clean bed.
