What an amazing location to enjoy an over night stay. A very good welcome from the staff upon arrival.
Don't be misled by the inclusion of a continental breakfast, that may be included in your room rate. This was the poorest offering I have ever seen. For a venue with a fine reputation for its weddings and dining experiences I truly would have expected so much more than a few stale slices of ores lived loaf, 3 sweating lumps of rubbery cheese, a quartered tomato, 3 slices of turkey and 3 couisant. So expecting to have brwakfast, you find yourself with no choice but to order the cooked at an additional charge. I hope the owners read this and return to their statement of intent 'independently owned, passionatly run' please please please make the effort to make your breakfast as good as the rest of the experience. We will stay again but will opt for Room only and take breakfast elsewhere.
Fabulous building Fantastic grounds Comfortable room
Shower was not working correctly
Exceptionally warm greeting on entry, you were instantly made to feel at home as a result of this. Access to the Stables restaurant and bar - team working at the bar (young man who had brought our bags up and Lady who we asked to make us a Rusty Nail cocktail) were friendly and made us feel most welcome. Size of room Like the idea of free WiFi, however we did not use it so have marked as 'Excellent' as I do not want it to otherwise impact on the score
Television did not seem to work Shower leaked onto floor but this may have been due to the angle of the shower head.
1. Shower cold, was told everyone was using it at once that's why (hmmmmm )... 2. Being woke up by drunk people, was told its the season (hmmmmm)...3. Phoned at night time to speak to Reception, drunk guests picked up?, was told that shouldnt of happened (hmmmmm). Paid £130, definitely not worth it. Before anyone says l mentioned this to Owner, she offered no real apology or part refund. + side Restaurant is FABOULOUS, food is great.
What a hidden gem! We had such an enjoyable stay, the Hall is beautiful as is the stables restaurant and bar, we didn't want to leave
Large room in very nice building. Staff pleasant and helpful
Staff great hotel lovely
Grand entrance Personal touch and down to earth service Unique and unlike "chain hotels" Very distinctive and individual rooms with loads of space Great location and peaceful surroundings
Very confusing layout Hard to locate front door in dark (we weren't the only guests to struggle with this) Sunday breakfast only served 0830 till 0930
Quirky but that made for a great stay. Food was excellent and very well priced. The staff were more than helpful. Would I go back? Definitely.
Fantastic location and fairytale setting - BEAUTIFUL building - a real country house and a staircase to die for... Lovely DAY NURSERY room at top of building very spacious. Great breakfast in the "kitchen". Lovely gardens and walks - very convenient for Chester and North Wales area. Adjacent STABLES bar and restaurant very convenient and good food.
DO NOT LET THIS PUT YOU OFF! - Definitely worth a visit!! A few bits not right/damaged in the bathroom - cracked tiles/grouting/panels - deluge shower head blocked - various bulbs blown in our bathroom and across the premises - a shame, it just lacks a bit of care/interest. Internet WiFi instructions are unclear/wrong - password is given as CAPS when is actually lower case - tedious having to traipse about to clarify and easily corrected! STABLES restaurant service was VERY poor on our night - very pleasant staff and plenty of them but some were inexperienced/untrained and we were left abandoned for long periods and the restaurant was not even remotely busy - they lost out on drinks sales, coffee sales and a tip... Still, don't let this put you off - worth a visit!
The peace and quiet, the lovely breakfasts and evening meal. Location is fab with Chester only 25 mins drive and the local village 10mins away. Most of the Staff were great, nothing was to much trouble
On the second night there was a couple of issues with communication breakdown between the new waitresses in the restaurant and food was a disappointment compared to our first night. But the next day it was resolved and we even stayed another night.
The character of the building, the setting. Antique furniture. Very comfortable, clean and tidy. Friendly staff. Would stay there again. Nice gardens.
Nothing major just a couple of minor things eg the bathroom door had a huge gap so you could see straight in ( Elizabethan Room) A few cobwebs in room but it is a very old building.
A beautiful landscaped drive down to the hotel. We couldn't believe how wonderful and unique this beautiful hotel was.
It was very grand and the suite was huge. Relaxing night with comfy sofa and bed.
The loud alarm went off twice in the night disturbing our sleep. There was no apology or complimentary breakfast upgrade offered.
Scenery was lovely, bed was heavenly.
Fire alarm went off for no apparent reason at 12:30am. Staff were very slow to respond. Breakfast lacked choice - not much of the menu was available.
A beautiful hotel in a stunning location. The room was very tastefully decorated and the bathroom had a wow factor. Food in the Stables restaurant and breakfast in the Servants Quarter was excellent.
Quality of the food was excellent in the restaurant. The grounds were immaculate and the staff always warm and welcoming
The staff although excellent seemed a little understaffed
Staff were very friendly & helpful, rooms individual & decor classy. Lovely porridge & plenty of choice for breakfast - exceptional for a "continental" breakfast. There was a huge marquee for annual business awards right under our window, we heard nothing after 11pm! Altogether fantastic.
Our only problem was the heat, especially in our bedroom. & unfortunately the very modern shower had no hot water. We opened the windows & had a hot wash at the sink, so no huge deal!
The hotel had a great welcoming and homely feel to it and we were upgraded to a beautiful suite.
The only disappointing thing was that the jacuzzi bath did not work
The staff were very welcoming and the amazing food at the Stables Restaurant made this stay so lovely. The country house itself was beautiful set in quiet picturesque grounds
It was like staying in a National Trust property. The room we stayed in was the Cane room which was nice and bright and very spacious. Breakfast was fantastic and a full veggie breakfast was made for us both as we are both vegetarians. Staff in the breakfast room were pleasant and the Stables Bar was another lovely building.
There was a note at reception when we arrived (admittedly we were early but sometimes you can check in early at hotels) saying that staff were in the marquee. When we figured out where this was, we were greeted abruptly when we found someone wandering around the marquee until they realised that we were actually guests. We were then told that we could not check in until 3pm (2:30 on website but no big deal) We were given a room with a jacuzzi bath and shower. The shower only worked on one setting and the jacuzzi or bath tap did not seem to work at all. A bit poor for £125 a night but not worth kicking up a fuss about as we were only there one night. Room could have done with a bit more TLC/refurb.
everything. the situation, decor and dinner in the stable restaurant superb
nothing to dislike
Well maybe not. But the grand drive up to the house was worth the fee, instantly taking you back to a time grind by. The house itself had maintained its gravitas while adapting subtly to cater for more modern tastes. The evening meal taken at the stables was impressively high quality. As was the breakfast. Overall it had a feeling of visiting country relatives.
Using the sat nav takes you to a golf course
Beautiful historic buildings. Serene grounds. Very friendly staff. Comfortable bed. Large, modern bathroom. Lovely restaurant.
Room was not spotlessly clean (though I certainly wouldn't call it dirty). Without discount, the room price is high. Biggest spider I have ever seen in this country in my bathroom!
I’d booked Soughton Hall via booking.com as a birthday treat with my Dad, ahead of a work meeting in North Wales the following day. We turned up to find a wedding in progress, and asked by reception if we were part of the wedding party. When we said no, we were told “well there will be a disco going on until 12.30.” The hotel restaurant was also shut, meaning we’d have to go out to and look for something. We were shown to our room, which turned out to have a double bed, rather than the twin beds we’d requested specially. No explanation, or even apology was offered for this. The room itself was comfortable enough, but hardly faultless - no wi-fi, a flickering light, a few stains on the duvet, and several minutes of running the tap to get hot water. The public rooms in the hotel (including the library, where I might have had some internet access) were basically out of bounds to us, as they were being used by the wedding party for photos and drinks. The wedding disco was pretty audible during the night, which didn’t make it easy to get to sleep, and this was compounded by having a skylight in the room with no blinds, meaning we were awake with the dawn’s early light. We had been told that breakfast would be served between 9.30 and 10.30, which meant that because I had a business meeting the following day, we had to do without breakfast, and my Dad had a 2 hour drive on an empty stomach. This is a hotel which clearly thinks it’s much better than it is, and having stayed in plenty of high quality country house hotels, I can say that this is not one of them. Had I just wanted somewhere to spend the night, I could have booked a travel lodge for a quarter of the price. I wanted something nicer – a bit of a treat. Instead, we were made to feel unwelcome and awkward, and received a level of service well below what I thought we were paying for.
