Location Staff Food Style Ambience
Myself and my husband came here 4 years ago and have just returned for a romantic getaway. It was as lovely as we remembered, good food, service, staff are really friendly, amazing location and views! Hope we get to visit again soon.
The views were amazing, the hotel was new and very clean and relaxing.
The hotel has gorgeous views and the sound of the sea coming in and out of the bay relaxed us straightaway. The staff were very friendly and helpful and there was always someone available. The restaurant had some lovely seafood dishes and our room was exceptional with a wonderful balcony and huge comfortable bed! We will definitely be back!
The only negative point was that it was a bit hot in the bar and restaurant area as the fire was lit, but it was unseasonably warm when we were there and it did add to the atmosphere.
Modern stylistic hotel set in an excellent location on the beach. Perfect for walks along the cliffs or ferry ride to Salcombe. Staff are always welcoming and helpful.
Crab starter for dinner was poor, more like frozen crab than fresh.
Views Location Decor Friendly staff Food
We stayed for 3 nights and would have been nice to have had fresh bed linen.
We found a lot of sand on our bedroom floor
The position.Food.relaxing atmosphere.Nice Staff.clean.
Lovely location, the view from our room was stunning. Staff were very friendly and welcoming, and the service in the restaurant and bar was first class. Generally excellent food with a couple of minor exceptions. The oysters and chips were especially fab.
No porridge for breakfast and the muesli was cheap/sweetened variety.
Location, views, staff, food
Bedroom very hot even in October (hence only fair rating for sleep). Several menu items unavailable in restaurant, excessive background noise in restaurant (no soft furnishings) causing difficulty hearing those at the table. Bizarre busts on spiral staircase!
The room, the view, the food all excellent -
the many dogs in the restaurant, the bar, the rooms etc
The fact that we could bring both our cocker spaniels, bowls and beds were provided although we brought our own. The décor and cleanliness were superb, especially the bathroom/shower and the beds were the most comfortable I have ever slept in on being away from home. The location was excellent - not sure what it is like in the height of summer but in October it was beautifully quiet. Price was very reasonable for standard supplied. Will not hesitate to recommend.
Someone forgot to make our bed and refresh our tea and coffee making/glasses.
Great location and style.
Over priced for the standard expected.
Location Atmosphere Decor Food and drink Art for sale
Noisy in room with doors banging and people talking. Fire alarm light in room Price for the smallest room!
Location and sea view from room Food was mainly good Room comfortable Dog friendly in some rooms Helpful staff Comfortable room
Some rooms have no real view No lift so not good for disabilities Price a little excessive for B&B Some fine tuning needs to be done in some areas.
Location on the beach excellent
very poor access to get to & from the hotel. Fixed screen over the bath making it very difficult to use the shower due to arthritis. Buffet breakfast always cold. More expensive than 4 star central London hotel
Location. Setting, Design quality and finish. Food (superb). Buzziness.
Bar area a bit cramped and poorly lit - and not well enough staffed. Needs better interface with restaurant (e.g. giving out menus, taking food orders)
The Ferry and the hotel transport into Salcombe. Breakfast. Obliging staff.
A great retreat, stunning location, homely & welcoming. Great service will definitely recommend South Sands
Friendly smiling staff, even though they worked long shifts & were on the following day. The food in the restraunt was superb with gorgeous view over the water .
Room was like a little box. It would have been helpful to state on the web page that the room had no view .The only window was fitted in the roof slope. The room felt dark & pokey. The bed was very hard & consisted of two matresses joined, resulting in an uncomfortable dip.
The hotel is really tastefully furnished with great attention to detail. The seaside aspect on its own little beach is wonderful - you can smell the sea as soon as you arrive. The food was very good quality and beautifully presented and the vegetarian options didn't seem like an after thought - my pearl barley and artichoke risotto was delicious.
As the name suggests, the hotel is in South Sands which is a little way outside Salcombe and does involve some driving on wiggly roads. Once parked up though, you can always use the ferry service to Salcombe or visit 'The Winking Prawn' which is about 10 minutes walk away.
We stayed in a balcony room overlooking the whole of the South Sands beach and estuary. It was so peaceful, and a stunning view to wake up to each morning! Wonderfully comfortable large bed, and tastefully furnished room. The staff were excellent. The menu had a good variety of fish and meat dishes and all our meals were superb. Wonderful breakfast with lots of choice to suit everyone. We will definitely return.
If there is possible downside, it is that there isn't a separate lounge. It didn't matter to us too much but I can see it would be a very welcome addition for a larger gathering of guests. I also think a lift would be a welcome addition.
Nothing to dislike on my first stay.
Some time back having stopped for a drink in their bar on a walk to Overbecks, during the height of the recent season, I found it full of beach visitors, children and most of all dogs...so I would know I would not get on with this if I had stayed then. This visit it was nice and quiet. Although I rate the location excellent, in the height of summer I am not sure unless you're a beach going family with dogs, nothing against intended. Also not really convenient for frequent trips into Salcombe, access hell when the roads are busy. All in all I still like the hotel.
