amazing bathroom, comfy bed, great service, beautiful grounds and choice of scented pillows!
No pool or spa
We loved the luxury of the old traditional hotel. The staff were caring and accomodating. From the moment we arrived to the time we left nothing was too much trouble for them. This type of service is a lost art - we were made to feel most welcome. We would stay again on another trip.
The only issue we had was not to do with the hotel but with the fact we were from out of the country and didn't have a car so getting around became a bit inconvenient
Grounds that you can actually explore and feel like you are in the countryside and not about to be hit by a golf ball. Outstanding food. Very comfortable room and bed.
The style of service was a little too formal for our taste.
The stay was wonderful, the staff could not have been more friendly or attentive. The Hotel and grounds were fabulous.
Not a real dislike but A/C would have been more comfortable
The staff are amazing, nothing is to much trouble. The bedroom was glorious and the bathroom was huge!
The hotels grounds are huge and just need a bit of nurturing.
Space for kids and dogs Good dining experience spacious mini-suite/ larger room Good views of South Downs Attentive staff
TV in bathroom No minibar of fridge Taps that cannot be turned with wet hands Very poor terrace service during the day Technology that didn't work
Everything. Literally everything. A wonderfully warm welcome from Ella on the front desk. A complimentary upgrade to a room with a steam shower - that's a shower room that doubles as a steam room, whatever next. Grub great, all the public rooms superb ambiance. Fabulous grounds.
Beautiful comfortable hotel with wonderful gardens and walks
Lovely big beds, very polite room service staff. Beautiful grounds and building.
I booked with family as it was my wedding weekend but obviously the hotel did not know this until I arrived and informed them. We went for dinner but were stopped on our way back in and asked when we were leaving the next day for my wedding. When I told them it would be about 1.30 ish I was told that I couldn't leave then and must leave before then as there was another bride and she had paid a lot of money to be there and would be arriving at the time of me leaving. I said I may not leave them and could leave later but not earlier and even suggested that perhaps I use a different exit. No compensation was offered for this which I feel considering the supposed "quality" of the hotel this could have been done, generally I think their approach to dealing with this was a little insensitive and could be handled better in future. Some of the rooms were fairly tatty with brown water marks on the walls and ripped upholstery on the chairs although mine was lovely I must say. At breakfast the following day we did have to ask 3 times if we could order and there was no one there so I'm not really sure what was going on.
Very good size room with excellent en-suite facilities. Housekeeping very good. Good location for Hickstead. Dining outside excellent -garden terrace for all meals. Very warm feel to bars. Staff for service a little light, not always around. Well equipped gym.
Acres of park land not well looked after, lake walk very rough. A few wild flower meadows set around the edge of the large lawn and lake would have improved this without too much extra work. Leisure facilities could be improved with a pool and spa.
Lovely hotel extremely clean and beautifully maintained. Staff very pleasant and courteous. Bedrooms were comfortable and spacious.
We had to wait for our room it wasn't ready. Had a complimentary drink in bar where service was slow considering we only had a water and cider. Shame no swimming pool or Spa.
Polite, helpful staff. Beautiful grounds/views. Fantastic food and drink.
It was very relaxed for a five star hotel.
The extra bed for a child was uncomfortable.
Setting, room, staff approach to guests.
Long wait at check-in desk while staff talked; noise from the terrace outside our window until after 1am; long wait for cooked breakfast which was not cooked as ordered and elements were just warm; and despite staff being polite and plentiful the service was poor.
The staff were very helpful and friendly
No air conditioning in the bedroom or ventilation in the bathroom, no safe or mini bar and lack of information about the time for breakfast. Although there were tea and coffee making facilities there was very little milk only enough for two drinks. When you're paying this much for a room you expect these things as standard.
Staff were great and such a beautiful spot.
Service a little slow at times. A spa there would be excellent.
The rooms were very large and spacious, bathroom great and the beds were excellent for a good nights sleep. Loved the grounds and the building overall.
I ordered a taxi to attend a wedding later that evening at the Mannings Heath golf club and ordred one for the return journey. Unfortunately when my friend and I went at the pre-arranged time to wait for the taxi - afater waiting for quite sometime we realised that the person at the reception who inforemd us the taxi was booked did not actually book the taxi- as a result we were late and missed the speeches which we were looking forward to. Think the customer service from some of the reception and restaurant staff could have been a little better
The landscape around and the support and service we received The room was beatiful.
Gorgeous room free upgrade Lovely setting Good food
Very friendly staff. Quirky rooms with nice touches.Wedding breakfast was fantastic. Great views.
Next morning's breakfast was light on choice but was good quality. Silly things like socket for kettle not working and nail kit emptied, presumably by an earlier guest, but not checked. Windows difficult to open. Noisy floorboards! These are picky things, made up for by the excellent quality otherwise.
I've stayed in South Lodge a number of times, and am never disappointed in the accommodations or amenities. It's elegant but homey, and never gives the appearance of stuffiness that frequently accompanies upmarket hotels. Food was exceptionally good and beautifully presented and served.
Everything. We got married that day and this is where we stayed for our first night. It was beautiful. Had breakfast outside overlooking the grounds. So wonderful. All the staff were very attentive. Terry Louise at the front desk was amazing! We will be back.
Nothing. Everything was perfect.
The excellent service provided by every member of staff we had contact with. Nothing was too much trouble and one rarely had to ask.
