amazing house, fantastic hosts!
The nice surprise for me was that the decor was in part Victorian but also many hints of Baroque Catholic religious interiors...time travel with some divine fervour thrown in! We stayed for New Year's Eve and whilst Hastings was a great place to go out this B&B enticed us to stay in and just enjoy the atmosphere. We were treated really well, had a great room with lots of beautiful delicate detail. The public rooms were a delight especially where we were offered tea and cake. The breakfast was also really fabulous. I would encourage everyone to spend a night there.
We stayed in the house keeper room and it could have been a little warmer but the rest of the house was very snug including the bathroom and toilet.
Recreation of Victorian home was exceptional in content and execution. Hosts were very attentive and courteous
I'm sure (late) Victorians had showers!
Genial Hosts General Ambiance
Everything was perfect. From the moment you step inside the door you are stepping back in time. Very friendly host who provided us with tea and home-made cake as a welcome. Room stunning - the attention to detail is outstanding. So quiet and restful. Breakfast in the dining room the next morning was plentiful, home cooked ( even home-made marmalade) and delicious. Everything in the house has been chosen to reflect the Victorian era - and age of elegance and gentility. Highly recommended.
Nothing to dislike.
The whole place, We have never stayed anywhere quite like it. The pictures simply do not do it justice. The place has just so much detail of an extraordinary high quality that it is hard to say just one thing. The works of art covering the walls, the historical atmosphere and all the wonderful fittings and ornaments curtains and the bed was perfect. wonderful place. We will be going back for sure. oh and breakfast was perfectly arga delicious.
There was nothing that we didn't like
The hotel is a wonderful step back in time and allows the visitor to reminisce about times gone by. The hosts are terrific, as are the home made cakes and jams.
Passionate renovation Unique Tea and cake on arrival Like a private museum-not to everybody's taste but totally mesmerising
The hospitality and welcome of Paul, Steven and Catherine was superb. The breakfast rivals a four star hotel.
The Victorian decor was a little overwhelming and dark. No en suite rooms is not good but I know unavoidable in the house.
- very pretty - super friendly hosts - very quiet, nice view - a bit far from the city centre, but still convenient if you are willing to walk a bit
- Bathroom not accessible directly from the rooms. Might be awkward for some...
comfortable bed, delicious home cooked breakfast
This B&B's decor is antique to almost a fault. Everything is religious in motif. Like staying in a museum or shrine, where everything is breakable. Overkill. Also, their lack of working wifi and cash-only surprise policy were frustrating.
It was like experiencing a time warp. The Victorian authenticity was incredible- a beautiful house & garden. We were made most welcome and provided with tea & homemade cake on arrival. Everything was exceptional.
The unique experience of putting the clock back to a time almost forgotten. Crisp linen. Elegance and attention to fine details. The opportunity to have breakfast on fine porcelain, kept warm in time honoured fashion.
Just the very steep hill. Fine when arriving by car but tough to walk!
The affability and helpfulness of the owners was outstanding, as was the experience of tea in the garden. Breakfast too was lavish and stylishly presented. The beds were extremely comfortable, and the location of the house delightfully quiet.
There was nothing to actually dislike, but it is fair to say that Victorian notions of plumbing took a little getting used to.
Even if it weren't for the jaw-dropping attention to detail of the house and garden, St Benedict would receive 10/10 for it's quiet location, excellent breakfast and hospitality of the hosts. Add to that the frankly awesome nature of the decoration inside (a real labour of love), which you can sense from pictures but really have to experience for yourself and honestly this may be the best hotel I have ever had the pleasure of staying at.
Very personal and very unusual place.
Great house, atmospheric and unique in all and every little nuances. so much thought about every detail in interior, garderns, kitchen!!! Authenticity and provenance in every detail!!! although we realise that St Benedict history was full of quite major changes. the access and location is easy for exploring Sussex. Friendliness of our hosts and their rediness to help with advice on sites, meals, travel planning. Thank you!
oh, there is only one problem that the time flew past so quick!!! but every moment was most enjoyable!!!
What should I say? It was a night far more fantastic. It's a gate let you escape from 21 Century. Every moment and every detail just alright. Definitely will revisit!
It was a step back in time yet comfortable and excellent service. Will revisit every time I'm in the area
I was really surprised when I got there... Beautiful Victorian style decorations, we had the two top rooms so we were kind of separated from the rest... Beautiful garden, nice breakfast... It's situated on top of a hill which somebody else mentioned in a review as a negative thing... Unless you are disabled, very elderly or possibly American, you'll be fine :-) Taxis are cheap if you don't want to walk...
no dvd player as advertised
If you are looking for a modern hotel with nowadays comfort, this is not the place. BUT this B&B is one you will never forget ! The decoration is amazing, the garden fabulous and the host very friendly and helpful. Without mentioning the delicious breakfast and tea + cake at tea time. Every room in the house is a discovery ; our stay was a leap back in time. St Leonard is a nice area as well, with lovely houses and lots of green. This is definitely a spot that merits a detour.
Fascinating decor - a real homage to Victorian living. Very good breakfast served in a traditional country house setting with silver service and a roaring fire. Staff very welcoming and helpful.
Would have preferred an on-suite
All the little details. Fresh cut flowers, excellent and generous breakfast, kindness of host.
