After some confusion over my booking, the very helpful and efficient reception staff dealt with the issue swiftly. I think that perhaps the spa facilities have helped gain this hotel its 4 star rating, as we couldn't find any other reasons. A lot of attention has been given to relatively cheap but (designed for effect) fit out of the rooms. Furnishings although stylish are not wearing well. We had what looked like a vomit stain just inside the door, which hadn't been cleaned very well. Although thankfully it didn't smell, it looked very unsightly. A number of items in the bathroom where poorly fitted, where a decision had been made to do a partial refurb, mixing older style tiles with a bit of new panelling, not good! The last straw was "soap pumps" in the bathroom, one of which was empty and almost falling off the wall. No other toiletries were supplied which is poor for a 4 star hotel and looks cheap.Overall there was a sense that corners had been cut and that a few feature walls and cheap furniture would mask the 3 star nature of this hotel. Also we ordered £50 worth of room service food which was again served on stylish plates but like everything else with this hotel of poor quality. Sticky toffee pudding is not a cheap piece of sponge with cheap toffee sauce squirted over the top. My ceasar salad was £13 and was not only poorly presented but was just dull and again cheap. We get the whole dark wood and dim lights thing, but under this needs to be some quality, not apparent other than from the Staff. Underlying impression was that De Vere need to improve quality and not rely on design to mask very average hotels (and no I don't work for a competitor) but I would choose Accor hotels over De Vere without hesitation. I have done on hundreds of occasions whilst travelling on business in the past and since both stays at De Vere have left me with the same impression, will continue to in the future.

It was my wife's 50th birthday. I booked the hotel as a surprise. My cousin recommended it and I booked it from her computer. The meal was lovely in the evening and we watched a video in our room later which was relaxing.

Friendly staff When I phoned to confirm my booking I specifically asked if all the spa facilities were available this weekend. To which the answer was yes. When I asked if I needed to book anything in advance, I was told to book the restaurant, which I did. When I arrived at the hotel, all spa facilities were fully booked up.

The location suited us and the place was clean and comfortable with good food and pleasant service We didn't like the way the hotel has been refurbished. It no longer appeared as a family friendly hotel and smacked more of a travel lodge than a four star hotel. Having enjoyed a number of breaks there in the past we were rather disappointed with the development and will not consider it for our short break in future.

Location Lack of toiletries in bathroom. No tissues. Leaking soap dispensers ( some people prefer to use a bar of soap). Bar stocks inadequate:- No worcester sauce for Bloody Mary. No sherry, other than Bristol cream. Restaurant standards not good, limited menu, food preparation barely adequate. Restaurant not open for lunch. Unable to book in until 3.00 P.M., which is hard to understand given that most people book out before 10.00 A.M.

Putrid smell in room. Complete lack of comfort, E.G. no chairs no table, nowhere to put luggage. Dark dismal room with view of flat roof and laundry trolly with dirty filthy washing in. Unable to open window due to the constant drone of heavy traffic. Items left in the room by staff obviously for other guests who had been allocated another room and who came knocking the door and walked in to get the champagne bottle and bucket themselves. In the bath room the light above the washing basin was not working neither was the extracter fan. We were not offered a drink at breakfast. Hot food not replenished cornflakes only cereal.

Room comfort & quiet. Both my wife & I were very disappointed with the evening meal. We paid top prices for fillet steaks. The steaks were only ok & the rest of the plate was not worth a penny & it very quickly went cold. We are accustomed to travel & we certainly know about good food, sadly DeVere ranks very low on our experience. In addition it cost us more than the room did, for that you really must hit the top every time.

It knows its target market well, but was not for us. The staff were like mechanical robots. The bathroom was unfinished - the tilework round the bath was cracked and dirty (room 305) Reception took 15 mins to answer the phone

The hotel was very clean and maintained at an excellent standard. It is clear it has been refurblished recently. We booked a budget room at £60 which was non refundable. For this price the room was excellent and I would have been willing to pay a lot more, the room was big, spacious and very nicely decorated. Hotel staff where very friendly and helpful, quick and easy check in.
