The Star Alfriston  

I liked everything about this hotel. The staff were exceptionally good; the rooms were well appointed and comfortable and the location was perfect. I liked that a problem was dealt with very quickly and efficiently, with no fuss.

I think the price is just a little expensive when compared with similar hotels that I have used.

Good position

A bit dead. Only one beer on in the bar

It was scruffy, in need of a refurbishment, and extremely overpriced. We paid £135 for what was quoted as bedroom only, first room we rejected. Small scruffy. It did include breakfast, but we would not have paid extra.Very disappoint ing experience. Bad choice.

The location of the Star is great, right in the middle of the scenic village of Alfriston. The rooms are modern, being a fairly new extension to the old pub and have good bathrooms and are quiet.

In my opinion it lacked atmosphere, despite first appearances. The staff were good but somehow it wasn't homely or jolly or romantic, it was just a bit functional and only moderate value for money as a result. The in the evening the dining room was empty, just 3 tables used and I think it was the lack of atmosphere that was the problem as the food was good value for money and well cooked. Breakfast was functional but somehow not great, just not sure why, but I would say that they need to work on improving the presentation of the food rather than the quality of the food, which was fine.

At £260 for two nights we felt our room was a little shabby and in need of renovation.

Old world charm. Convenient for Newhaven ferry (reason for staying there).

On arrival at this hotel we were informed there would be a 2% surcharge if we used a credit card. I spoke to another receptionist the following day and she said that was a mistake and as we had booked before 1st April she would not charge and we should not have been charged. We booked single rooms at this hotel which were very small and dark and the first receptionist reminded us we had booked single rooms and they only had 2. When we spoke to the 2nd receptionist she changed the rooms to twin rooms for each of us. There was no Shampoo or tissues in either of the rooms which I thought there should be for the price we had paid. The breakfasts were ok but it would have been better if we could have had some fresh fruit without having to ask for it. The hotel is a bit run down and was quite empty which gave it a depressing air.

The character of the place

We thought the price was a bit much but this was somewhat offsett by the excellent friendly service.

The staff were extremely friendly and we were welcomed and treated like honoured guests. The food and service were both excellent and the room was lovely and comfortable.

Noisy heating system clanking during the night - but probably only annoying if, like me, you have insomnia!

Very efficient and friendly staff. Fantastic setting right in middle of the beautiful village of Alfriston. Very convenient access to South Downs Way.

Staff were excellent, Most clean hotel we have stayed in. In the centre of Alfriston, nice village and a short car ride to the coast. Near Eastbourne too. Would go back.

Nothing really but the decor was a bit tired and in need of redecoration

Was cosy with log fires, the staff were very friendly, food was fab, will definately go back.

The restaurant was closed due to a wedding so we were obliged to eat in the bar. The quality of the bar food was very poor.

Everything!! Lovely room, excellent breakfast, all the staff were helpful,friendly and nothing was too much trouble. They say they are dog friendly and they are........towel, throw , bowl and bonios provided, and if you don't want to leave the dog in the room at breakfast time they will set a table in the bar/ lounge for you to eat there. Quite rightly so the only place dogs are not allowed is in the restaurant. We loved The Star Alftiston.

Absolutely nothing!!!

The staff were very friendly and went out of their way. They were paricularly accommodating to our dog and it was nice and relaxing sitting by the fire in the bar.

The accommation block at the back is not very aesthetically pleasing but the rooms are fine
