The Star AlfristonHigh Street, Alfriston, BN26 5TA Alfriston (Show map) Very good, Score from 68 reviews“Centrally situated close to Southdowns Way”
Roger,
Southampton
Reputed to be one of the country's oldest inns, The Star Alfriston offers a unique blend of oak beams, open fires, an intimate atmosphere and traditional hospitality alongside the modern comforts of its well furnished guest accommodations. Originally built in the 13th century and known as 'The Star of Bethlehem' until at least 1520, the hotel was then run by the monks of Battle Abbey who offered shelter to friars and pilgrims on their way to the shrine of St Richard at Chichester. Today's traveler can be assured of an equally warm welcome right at the heart of the picturesque village of Alfriston. It is ideally located for walking the South Down's Way, visiting Glyndebourne, gentile Eastbourne, vibrant Brighton or for taking the Newhaven-Dieppe ferry. You can also enjoy golf, clay-pigeon shooting and horseback riding in the area. Facilities include the AA-RosetteCapella Restaurant for modern cuisine and a bar serving light meals and snacks. Excellent staff - reception and restaurant. Evening meal very good quality and exceptional value (2 for 1 offer). Location in lovely village with direct access to South Downs Way. Good wi-fi coverage (and free) Room adequate but a little tired.

The whole experience during my stay was one of relaxed calm professionalism with staff in every department willing to offer inventive and helpful solutions to queries. Room became a little cool during the day. No help was offered with luggage.

A lovely old inn in a beautiful village, prefectly situated for the South Downs Way. The restaurant and bar were excellent. The bedrooms were comfortable but rather plain.

The rooms were very dated, especially given the rates charged - need renovating.

Not a complaint, but just a thought that the hotel lacked the personal touch that you get with smaller hotels!

The location was good and we were efficiently received. The restaurant and bar were good. The room was fairly tired and the bed a bit small although the bathroom was good. One night there was a party/disco/karaoke which kept us awake. The next morning there was a wedding show in the restaurant so breakfast was slightly chaotically organised in the bar area. It would have been helpful to have known about these events beforehand.

Everything except my experience in the bar/lounge. The reason I score 'poor' for services/facilities is that my visit was excellent in every respect bar one. I did not appreciate having to wait almost an hour for my dinner served in the bar/lounge. I shall be returning next month and trust that management will have looked into my experience so that I do not have a repetition.

Very old inn picturesque location in pretty village. Breakfasts very good, room was clean and well furnished, also had a bath, good news after long South Downs walk. Receptionist friendly even when giving us bad news that there was no hot water due to a power cut the previous evening. Quiet room even though on main street. Junior barman was still learning the ropes and was on his own. He was definitely under pressure on the night that we arrived, so long time waiting for drinks, however he was doing his best in difficult circumstances.

Character and comfort in a quiet, friendly village As a place to stay it was fine. The modern annexe with the guest rooms was architecutrally out of keeping with the rest of the old village, but then it was out of sight of the main street and the rooms themselves were OK
