The St Denys is conveniently located for access to the city centre. The room was spacious. The room was advertised as 'superior' but the only notable thing about it was the size - being the top part of a terraced house it comprised of quite a large bathroom, decent size bedroom and a living room. However, it was obviously in need of some tlc. There was a huge crack running down the staircase wall and the floor in the bedroom and bathroom sloped quite a bit! The room was equipped with a large flat screen tv but we couldn't use it as we were not supplied with a remote control. There were no toiletries provided either. In a 'superior' room I would usually expect a sachet of shower gel at the very least. The car park is tiny and if you are forced to park where you are blocking another car in you have to leave your car keys at reception. Breakfast only just ok and you have to make your own toast. On checkout we had to ring the bell in reception 5 times for attention despite being able to hear the staff chatting upstairs. They finally came when we held our finger on the bell! There are far better places to stay for less money nearby - one to avoid.

It was ideally situated for the city centre shops, attractions, restaurants, etc. Railway station is only a short taxi ride away. Staff were friendly and helpful, the room was small but clean and well decorated and the breakfast was better than some we have had in far more expensive hotels. Highly recommended.

Great location. My only dislike in room 12 which was meant to be a superior room was the mouldy grouting in the bathroom round the shower. Tiny bar of soap and 4 sachets of anti dandruff shampoo. Apart from the bathroom everything was great. Would definately stay again but take my own soap and shampoo. Good breakfast however missing a tomato with the full english. Room was excellent if a bit noisy from traffic but no problem. Many thanks.

Our 2 day break was on the spur of the moment as we had always wanted to visit the Minster. We have both recently retired and moved to be nearer our daughter. The room we were given was very clean, spacious and comfortable especially as I have bad legs and my wife has just been diagnosed with bone cancer in her back hence the reason for our snap visit. We thank the St Denys very much. Rob & Marsha Harris

The location was fantastic. Breakfast was really good. Room comfort also really good, the bed was soooo comfortable!! The bar area was nice, but could be made so much nicer. Didn't like the fact that the ironing board and other items were left out on show.

The staff are friendly and helpful. The room is large and since we stayed in the ground floor and no need to climb up the staircase with heavy luggage. The breakfast is good. The bed is very big but too soft. May be better to put one more table and one more chair inside the room.

The freshly cooked breakfast in the morning was very nice. The staff were very friendly. Calling St Denys a hotel does it rather an injustice, as it immediately implies at least Travelodge/Premier Inn standards, which it does not have, and therefore envokes dissappointment apon arrival. Follow this with the insistance you pay before you have even seen your room is not a good start to the stay. Calling it what it is, a B&B/Guesthouse, is far more realistic, and will give people a far better expectation. As a hotel, i thought it fell short. Window shutters on the ground floor that cannot close completely, thick layers of dust on the ceiling fan, bath sealant in need of replacing, and bathroom window could use a lick of paint. (Refering to Room 12). However, as a £39 B&B with breakfast included, i thought that was adequate, and more aptly priced. Certainly would not have paid any more. The hotel (B&B) smelt quite "musty" on arrival, which is a bit offputting. I understand there are some renovations going on at the moment, but a handful of airfrehners in the rooms and reception wouldn't be a bad idea, just to give it a less stale aroma. Room for improvement.

Excellent for town. Very good breakfast and friendly breakfast staff. Room cold but ok .. tv awkward to see from bed... Bathroom clean. Parking was extremely tight. For price paid £39 a night it was good. Would go back. Had drink in bar..£3 For a can lager but the barmaid wouldnt enter into conversation or even turn the music or tv on. She not on commission then! Sat in extreme quiet not good atmosphere think we were invading her space. Bedroom window let wind in...heard every sound outside.

Great location and the most comfortable bed ive ever slept in. I booked the 'hotel' after seing good pictures and great location at a reasonable price for the weekend before christmas. I then saw reviews and was regretting my decision. I was going to cancel but would lose £99 so decided to stick with it and would complain when I got there if I needed to. We arrived around 7pm and there was no space in the 'car park' but we found a car park 3minutes walk away that was free between 5pm- 8am so we parked there. We were shown to our room which was number 14. This was located on the top floor of an end terraced house next to the hotel. I was apprehensive of what we would find but was very pleasently surprised. The room was clean and welcoming. The bathroom was clean with ample supply of shower gels etc. there was some mould around the shower door but apart from that very clean. The bed was the most comfortable ive ever slept in and it was lovely and warm. Breakfast was average though the chairs were too high for the tables so it was quite uncomforatble. I went to check out and the lady was sat outside having a smoke she came in when she saw me enter the hotel. She took my key and that was that, not a very friendly departure. Better customer service required. I cant comment on the rest of the hotel but my room certainly didnt deserve the bad comments I read. My husband and I were more than satisfied with it.

The location of St Denys was fantastic for exploring York it was very central cutting out any need for taxis or public transport, the shops were also within easy walking distance. Although very central it was still nice and peaceful we had a studio facing the road but were not disturbed by traffic or passing pedestrians. Quite dated, with some very clever photography of the rooms.

I liked the location as it was a couple of minutes walk to the centre. I didn't like the room as we was even a part of the hotel we was in a house upstairs, nexted to another house that was run down. The road was very busy that we was next to and could hear everything. None of the lights worked in the room constantly apart from one lamp that was pretty much lay on the floor it was that broken. The toilet seat had come off so I had to click it back on myself. I would of preferred to stay in the hotel bit. I think its a little over priced for what you get. Otherwise I had a fantastic time in York.

Overall, this was a fairly nice place to stay - the breakfast was very good with a good choice. The rooms were modern and light, if a little outdated and the location was excellent - a five minute walk into the town centre. The room could have been a bit better presented - towels were a bit worn, one of the taps was not attached properly, the teacups didn't match, one of the lightbulbs was not working, windows weren't very clean.

St Denys is Ideal for York City center. It is a short walk to the main shopping & Entertainment area. The Breakfast menu is limited, for eg: No tomatoes were available with the full English etc. The decor was substandard with cracks in the plaster
