Beautiful restaurant with windows on all sides overlooking the loch, comfortable traditional bar, the hotel public rooms have been nicely re-furbished. Enjoyed our brief stay on the way to the ferry to Islay which is about 20 mins drive away. Our bathroom definately needed updating but was clean and functional. The bedroom in the 1960/70's extension had been redecorated with some new furniture but the desk/dressing table didn't match the black wardrobe and bedside units and it was very cold until the heating came on. There was a small electric heater provided too,. The rooms are not double glazed and the exterior needs some repairs but I know this all takes time and money.

Location, views The service just isn't up to snuff. Waited at the bar for 10 minutes before someone arrived to serve - in mid-evening. Breakfast service very, very slow. Nearly 40 minutes before cooked order arrived - and restaurant was not very busy.

I liked pretty much everything about the hotel. Location was fantastic and the hotel had the feeling of a stately home. The staff were discreet and very efficient and made us feel very welcome. We particularly enjoyed the snooker room. The food was fantastic and very reasonable considering the grade of hotel. I would have no hesitation in recommending this hotel.

The food was lovely, as was the view from the restaurant. The grounds were beautiful for walking in Bedroom and bar/lounge area were freezing! Had to keep my outdoor jacket on whilst in there. Music was very low, no atmosphere - which led to couples whispering and it felt 'uncomfortable'. Had the fire been lit and the hotel invested in someone walking around chatting to guests would have made for a much more welcome and relaxed atmosphere. The heating was turned on during the night in our room but we were frozen by the time we went to bed [and left the bar area early due to this], and then had to sleep in our robes with the spare blanket over us. Not ideal. Additionally, we requested a double room but were given a room with 2 single beds - not ideal for a married couple celebrating a birthday which hotel was aware of. Our room was in the 'new' section of the hotel and we would have preferred to be in the older area.

My overall rating of the hotel above is based on the striking contrast between the truly excellent restaurant, attentive and engaging staff, and friendly service on the one hand, and the misleading nature of the promotion of the rooms at a 'special' price, which will be dealt with in the section below. The restaurant experience was very pleasant indeed; a fabulous outlook, spacious and bright but atmospheric as darkness fell. Excellent menu, food, and a young staff with personality and commitment. The house is designed by William Playfair, the celebrated 19th-century architect responsible for much of landmark Victorian Edinburgh, and this should be emphasised. It is a real plus point. The rooms in the 1971 annexe are well below modern four-star expectations in terms of decor, and badly in need of brightening up. We felt almost misled at the 'special offer' because of this, and this was the impression of all four guests in my party, including one from The Netherlands and one from Belgium. We took four rooms, and are well-travelled business hotel users worldwide. The shower in my room did not work, and there was no hairdrier in another. There was a musty smell in the rooms when we entered. (There is a series of principal rooms available in the main house and these are said to be impressive.) The explanation given was that there was no technician available at the hotel on this occasion I booked the meal in advance by telephone, but discovered that it had not been booked when I mentioned it on arrival.

The public areas maintained well, and beautiful old building. We had an AMAZING breakfast there, the food was very high standard and delicious. If you go there with this information in mind, you will not be disappointed. We walked around the island opposite at low tide and is was beautiful forest and beach. This place is all about location, private beach and beautiful garden. Is shabby in parts though and desperately needs more work done to the bedrooms and restaurant. If you dont mind a few cracks here and there and a room that is not too luxurious you wont mind. Not enough toiletries in bathrooms. Pillows very uncomfotable/hard/thin but good bed.

Nice location, view on a loch from the restaurant Dark rooms, bathrooms dirty and need to be renewed. The worse was at the restaurant, I order a quite expensive lobster and got a very small one without claws. I complained to the F&B manager who couldn't care less. She told me that lobsters in Scotland came without claws!!! I just couldn't believe it! I also asked in advance for connection rooms as we were traveling with young children and that was not offered. It's not worth the price, you find much better quality for less!

Stonefield Castle's location is absolutely breathtaking. The views from the eating areas as well as the rooms are spectacular. There are numerous trails around the castle that you can use for easy hiking. The food was great, but the service could be slow and a little disorganized.
