Extremely comfortable hotel, excellent food. Can't fault the young man who checked us in, served at the bar, took food order and served the food then checked us out next morning with never a complaint but always a smile. Will definitely stay again.
Arrived in poor weather to a cheerful welcome and a huge, comfortable room. Dinner was substantial and tasty, washed down with excellent beer. Slept well and enjoyed breakfast before heading off down the M6.
Maybe a bit overheated? But that's a matter of taste.
full of character, Good food , good breakfast, very quiet location, generous sized bedroom and bathroom. easy access to Carlisle and surrounding countryside. Warm welcome by all. I would return and certainly recommend it.
nothing we didn't like
We loved the pub's atmosphere with its old oak furniture and open fires. The staff were welcoming and served us a meal even though we had arrived rather late.
A delightful place to stay. Wine great, food great, room great. What more can we say? It ticked all the boxes. We will make every effort to visit again.
Pretty location, staff very attentive, value for money room.
Last orders for dinner were 8.30- far too early, we almost missed it Whilst my husband enjoyed his steak, my meal was poor quality, obviously microwaved food Breakfast finished at 9.30am, too early for a Sunday!
It was guiet.
The really hazardous lower half of the ceiling over my bath. I hit my head when getting in to use the shower. Also it was very poorly lit. Health & Safety inspectors would have a field day in there.
found String of Horses very welcoming, staff were very helpful and friendly, rooms very clean and tidy, with good facilities. would certainly stay there again
Faugh is not very clearly marked on main road, we were onto the turn before knew it, did find String of Horses quite quickly
A very good experience all round. Nice greeting, and promptly shown to our room. Room was bright and ok for a night stop over on way to Scotland. Dinner was very good, with the staff popping past to check if we were ok. It was a chilly evening and the fire was lit, which was nice. All in all I would recommend. The hotel/ inn I imagine could get quite noisy, as we could hear people taking in the room next door, but we slept very well undisturbed.
On a negative, and this is a very minor niggle, the lighting in the bathroom was shockingly poor. You needed to keep the curtains closed when using the bathroom, as it was like the "black hole of Culcuta"!
Nothing to dislike.
Good location Great room Wonderful dinner in the pub Luxurious breakfast in the dining room Gracious host and hostess
Lovely old pub, cosy and warm good range of real ale Friendly staff, good food Comfortable rooms Reasonable price
A friendly welcome, comfortable clean room, tasty evening meal amongst friendly locals and visitors, decent nights sleep, full English breakfast; what more do you want? Seriously, nothing lacking, brilliant stay!
Now let's think........nope, nothing.
The room was clean and neat. There was a room to socialize in. We were traveling with another oouple, so that was a nice place to get together. Above all... the food was exceptional!! Worth a trip just for the cuisine. And, I had a couple of things I had washed that weren't drying very welll in the room and the owner took them home, dried them, and they were at our breakfast table in the morning. Exceptional service.
quiet location, nice attached pub/restaurant. Our room was very nice, had a pleasant drive up to Hadrian's Wall for some walking.
Nothing else in the community
Elegant inn with mordernly furnished room. Friendly manager. Great bar. No problem with wifi. We stayed in a 3-beds room and the room was very big. Bathroom was spacious, modern, and clean. At the room there were tea and coffee.
Breakfast doesn't have much variation-though we can enjoy complete English breakfast Little bit too far from everywhere- Carlisle, The Lake District... And we don't have much restaurant choices for dinner -the bar at the inn serves good food with classic atmosphere. Worth trying!
Rooms perfect. Bar area cosy . Nice breakfast. Staff very friendly. Would stay sgain.
Appearance, location, service, comfort, food.
English breakfast was good ad was pub. Distance from city was good to assure a good rest. We believe it is a good value and provided a good experience.
We would not have found it unless Navi had it as a lodging. Because it did, no problem.
Everything, the fact that the inn keeper remembered us from our honeymoon two years ago,the general ambiance and quality of food. The character of the inn is also something to experience.Set in a small village it is charming to the core.
Cosy little inn just what we hoped it would be and some.rooms were great and comfortable and food was out of this world and very reasonable will be back for sure!
Wonderful old coaching inn with excellent staff and good food and beer, can't really ask or hope for more.
the place ,the food, the staff
It was all good
Owner is hard working and friendly and the place is as charming as they come. It was easy to find with the sat-nav using the postal code as the street is "unnamed." The food in the restaurant is fine and we ate there every night. This place has everything you would want from a 400 year old English Inn.
Very clean, lovely atmosphere, friendly staff and delicious food
