Central location in lovely little town Our room was a very long way from reception, the bathroom was cold, I was unable to get Wi Fi on my Apple MacBook Pro laptop. Most staff were efficient but unfriendly. Our room was quite noisy with, what sounded like, the electric motor of a freezer going all nigh (which was quite loud).

Location is good with many places to eat/drink nearby. The hotel is getting very tired and in need of a serious make-over. Main problem with recent stay was bathroom. Fixed shower head was not at the right angle and therefore water went everywhere despite using the shower curtain. Also no ventilation or window so remained steamed up for so long before we could go back in and use mirror.

Convenient location for centre of Hitchin Access to rooms can be complex (different levels and fire-doors) since it is an old building.

Bed was crispy clean and very comfortable. Shower was lovely, bit like a waterfall! Nice breakfast! One bar and a nightclub were very noisy but a lovely restaurant straight across the road called just 32 moderately priced and executed excellently Our first room hadn't been cleaned/changed and we were immediately moved to another room, so thank you for that. It is value for money but it is tired around the edges! Worn out carpet damp patch on our bedroom ceiling, small hole in the wall, if it's a double room then towels should reflect that ie: 2 bath towels 2 hand towels. The bathroom floor needed a good scrub with some bleach and limescale build up around taps, although the shower was excellent by the time I finished my shower the water had built up to my knees in the bath

The breakfast had a good variety of options and was well prepared The hotel was dirty and shabby. The amount of dust around was quite unbelievable. We booked a superior room but the number on our guest printed guest card had been changed. We were given a four poster room which may have been seen as an upgrade. It was not, It was very shabby and dirty, you could hardly see through the mirror, the radiator and blinds were thick with dust, the bathroom window wouldn't close and therefore it was noisy as we looked on to a wedding reception.

The external charm and friendly staff are what benefit this hotel. The communal areas are pleasant enough but are rather bland. The bathroom facilities were very dated and suffering with water damage and unsightly floor stains. The housekeeping standards are low.

The revamp painting, new bathrooms and decor have certainly made the hotel even better. Our stay (third time) was very pleasant with comfortable beds, crisp linen, and a hearty breakfast.

Good location for what I needed. Bar/restaurant food was very good and breakfast even better. Restaurant staff very nice. Price quite high for standard of room. Towels and bath mat not changed everyday, left hanging on cold radiator in my room. Bedroom window did not shut fully, made it cold and is not very secure. Matress was quite lumpy. Car parked right outside entrance to my room.

Even though the room was very good / clean& tidy etc for a Double room the Bed was very small for a Double and it was a Hike to get to the Room! We should have asked for a taxi to get there ( a good 10 min walk) which when there was a little noisy! All night with the Fans etc running. Other than that very nice.

Staff friendliness from reception arrival to fixing the failed electrics in my room the next morning. Superb meal in bar and good choice of drinks. Room quiet, warm and most most comfortable bed and pillows - probably the best for comfort to date - and i am 52!

I enjoyed the uniqueness of the rooms and he friendliness of the staff The wi-fi connection was inconsistant. The inconsideration of other hotel guests (wedding guests) arguing and making a lot of noise in the early hours of the morning

Convenience and Old English ambience - even though the hotel was under renovations the inconvenience was minimal and the discounted price made up for this. Whilst we were there, the main door was always left open. It was a chilly day allowing the main lounge and bar area to be rather draughty. There was no "comments" form in our room, we were not asked at reception on departure whether everything was satisfactory. Otherwise we would have mentioned that the door to the bathroom in Room 16 had a very stiff and firm closing mechanism - something that a less able person would have not been able to use.

Friendly staff and great location. Condition of rooms was graded lower because they are in the midst of refurbishment. No use of car park during building works was inconvenient but didn't spoil our stay. I would happily stay there again and may do so next year for a long weekend break. There are a couple of steps immediately through doorways on first floor. These could be better highlighted as my wife missed one and jarred her hip. This was doubly unfortunate as this was the hip subject to a hip replacement operation four months ago. This comment is meant constructively and may be being addressed as part of the refurbishment.

Right in the middle of hitchin. Easy to find. The wifi didn't work and that was one of the main reasons I stayed there. I asked the staff for help but they said it should work and we left it at that.

Small dark room, ceiling peeling away, bathroom smelt and looked like a hospital toilet, shower too small to be able to move/wash in, noisiest room I've ever stayed in - right on the street next to pubs/nighclubs
