The hotel was very cenral for Newcastle and Gateshead, within walking distance of all the sights and attractions of the city and the hotel itself was very clean, nice rooms and helpful staff Unfortunately the hotel has two lap dancing clubs next door to it, the noise and inappropriate language coming from these clubs meant that I couldn't actually get to sleep until 4.45am in the morning as the clubs didn't close until 4am. I certainly wouldn't want to take my family to this hotel and wouldn't recomment it to others given this unfortunate location.

I thought the building was lovely and the rooms had been designed well to fit within it but best of all were your staff - charming, helpful and friendly from the receptionist to the lady waiting in the dining room at breakfast. They made me feel very welcome and that nothing was too much trouble. I would definitely stay again and recommend the hotel to others. The front is a little off putting and the entrance round the back a little alarming at night for a single women travelling alone - its like going down a creepy alley!

Everything except the main door of the hotel entrance, it was noisy. The shower I didn't like, the hose was disconnected from the water distributer, which made a big explosive of water fountain caused due the pressure.

Staff were outstanding! Everyone I encountered during my stay were all very polite and helpful. The staff at reception went out of their way to help when I realised I had left my phone charger at home and brought one in from home for me to use! The main purpose of my stay was for flat hunting in the city and again the staff were extremely helpful with suggestions and ideas. Amazing customer service. Nothing was forced and they all had a lovely charm! Could be considered a little 'rough round the edges' for some, but I think it added to the character of the building. The new refubishments have started to make a noticeable difference.

It was convenient to the City Hall where my friend and myself went to see Glen Campbell in concert. The staff were friendly and helpful. The bedroom and bathroom were clean and there were plenty of towels and toiletries. The breakfast was good and we got plenty to eat. I did not realise from the website that breakfast was not included in the price of the room, therefore the room to my friend and myself was overpriced for not including breakfast. We had a double room and there was only 1 chair to sit on. The water in the bath/shower was only lukewarm both at night and the following morning. There was no proper shower mat, we used a towel. There was no rails to hold on to when you were getting in/out of the bath. I had sprained my ankle recently and it is still not ok and I was really nervous getting in and out of the bath in case I slipped. Also the location, which is no fault of the hotel, was too noisy as we were told that Dean St is the busiest street in Newcastle and we did not sleep till 5am with people walking up and down the street going to night clubs, taxis going past and police cars. So I really would not stay there again, even if the problems I mentioned were fixed it was far too noisy and was told it is always like that by the staff. Teresa Allan

Staff couldn't have been more helpful. Great value in a less than half price promotion. Full price wouldn't be worth it - there are better hotels in the area for the full rate £60-£65

Just the convenience of the town centre and very nice staff A water pipe had burst (not the staff's fault), so we had to move rooms. The water in the shower was then cold, was fixed immediately. Then the water was like a trickle.

Although in the middle of a renovation I found the Surtees a very accommodating place to stay for a couple of days, Particularly liked the lift from 1923!

4 of us stayed in the Surtees hotel. The price for rooms was way to expensive, stains on both sheets, pillow cases and the chair in the room. Curtains were dirty and falling down. All walls and doors up the stairs were damaged and dirty. On the Sat night we had a stag party banging and kicking down the door for hours and then set the fire alarm off which was not turned off for ages. We were not able to even call reception to report them at our door as there was no phone and as two girls in a room this is unacceptable to be carrying on in a hotel that we paid 160sterling to stay in for two nights. I would never recommend this hotel to anyone as along with the above the staff were very unfriendly and really un-co-operative.

We needed two rooms and they had them facing eachother, rooms were really nice aswell, when we said our shower didn't work they gave us another room to use free of charge which was also nice. Was only 5 pound in a taxi which wasnt alot considering there was 5 of us. The male staff were really really rude!!! (Females were lovely though) The lift was old fashioned and really hard to use... And we were 3 floors up aswell, bar quite expensive.
