Said to be haunted by the ghost of Mary Queen of Scots, this Elizabethan hotel has historic features and a cozy restaurant. Charm and character mix with modern facilities. The Talbot Hotel has oak beams, open fires and many other historic qualities. Some parts of the hotel come from Fotheringhay Castle. This includes the staircase, which Mary Queen of Scots walked down before being executed. Recently refurbished, the Talbot is beautifully old, but fully up-to-date, with bedrooms with private bathrooms, Wi-Fi access and free parking. The intimate restaurant and bar offer traditional British cuisine, fine wines and real ales. Oundle is a town with Georgian architecture and a 14th-century church. Close by is Lyveden New Bield, the remains of a cross-shaped 16th-century lodge. Peterborough (and its shopping center) is just 10 miles away. Hotel Rooms: 35 We're sorry, but it is currently not possible to make reservations for this hotel.

Wonderful Georgian building with Elizabethan features (!) in the centre of town. Good breakfast menu + selection The hotel is in the middle of a (tasteful) refurbishment within the confines of a Grade 1 listed building, with some of the bedrooms and most of the public areas looking tired. A work in progress that no doubt will be very nice when eventually completed.

An attractive hotel which could do with a bit of redecoration. However, the room was nice, the bed with duvet was very comfortable and in the bathroom there were lovely huge bath towels. A real bonus! Breakfast was very good and the staff helpful and friendly. Difficult to find the right words to describe this hotel as it is very much for tourists (a lot of local history), parents visiting their children at Oundle School and like us attending a family funeral.

A really good breakfast, after a quiet and comfortable night, and allowing us to have our small dog in a box during the night in our room with pleasant and courteous service at Reception

Friendly hotel staff in a delightful historic setting. Refurbished room was nicely decorated, spotlessly clean and very comfortable. Breakfast was rather slow coming which didn't matter at all as we were on a weekend break.

In the spirit of summer adventure We wandered through villages green soaked up by our senses was Eliott's England with an earthy piquance that artists have seen and though kindred spirits have been here before us the Talbot seems timeless and surely remembers all of the curious souls she has seen. The only slight disadvantage was the walking down long corridors.

I liked the history attached to the Mary Queen of Scots Room, the old stone buildings etc. The hotel needs updating, but the work is already in-progress (I'm kinda glad we got to see it before the changes are completed) I specifically wanted to take my daughter to Oundle as this was where her father first lived when he left school. It was also close to Peterborough along with it's activities and shopping centres. She was greatly impressed with Peterborough Cathedral.

The hotel is charming and Oundle is definitely worth a visit. The whole place is being renovated. My room was relatively new but very basic, particularly the bathroom.

I felt as if I were in 16th century. I will tell my friends of "Mary Queen of Scots lovers" in Japan-Scotland Society about the Talbot Hotel and it is not only in the lowland of Scotland to explor the places connected with the tragic queen. The town of Oundel is also nice country town.

Excellent food. Car park is not as private as expected, and was full - in spite of advertised assurance that no reservation necessary.

I stayed in thIs hotel because of its proximity to Oundle School and subject to what I am about to say, it is a very decent hotel. The rooms are nice and clean and the staff are very pleasant. The hotel desperately needs some major overhaul to their water system. Twice in a row, when I stayed in March and June 2011, I had trouble enjoying a hot shower when I needed it. In march, the system broke down and I had to wait until the next morning. This time, the cold water stopped working for a few minutes and I almost got burnt. It worked back to normal after a long while and by this time I was completely exhausted so couldn't be bothered to report to the staff. One might think that I wasn't clever enough to work the faucets, but not so. There was a third occasion further back when I stayed in a room (which had used twice) and had trouble working out the faucets. I called for help which arrived shortly and was told that I was not the first to require help.

Convenience re. My visit to Oundle. I have know the hotel for many years and have stayed there on many occassions. Staff were friendly on the whole, particularly at breakfast. Food at breakfast was better than previously I was not offered help with luggage when I booked in. No box of tissues in bedroom. As a single person, sleeping on ground floor, it was not comfortable being unable to feel safe to leave a window open overnight - there was no small window available. There remains a feeling of dreariness about the decor particularly around the reception area.

Recently renovated rooms have transformed this hotel into somewhere attractive to stay. The staff were exceptionally pleasant which is equally important. Breakfast buffet was very limited and the kitchen/coffee/overall logistics were over stretched - but perhaps because busier than expected. Needs to be sorted but easy to fix.

We stayed at the hotel as it was the venue for a friends's 40th wedding anniversary celebration. We had the benefit being able to enjoy a drink and then to walk a few yards to our room. The young staff were all very attentive and appeared to be working really hard as we saw the same faces in reception, in the hotel bar, serving at the celebration and again serving breakfast which was excellent and plentiful with a good menu choice. Our room was comfortable with excellent facilities.

The rooms had been refurbished fairly recently so were fresh and modern but tasteful in an historic settting. Excellent breakfast included in the room rate. Public areas are looking tired but we were told that they are due for a major refit later in the year.
