Situated in a small town, this inn provides real ale, good home-cooked food from local suppliers, a fine wine menu and live entertainment on a regular basis.
Score from 215 reviews Good
Boasting wonderful views across the Stour and Box river valleys, this privately owned inn is set on a hill in the picturesque village of Stoke-by-Nayland, on the Essex and Suffolk border.
Score from 67 reviews Superb
Situated within a 14th-century coaching inn, the award-winning Best Western Rose and Crown Hotel is located just a 15 minutes’ walk from the centre of historic Colchester.
Score from 227 reviews Very good
Sleek design is coupled with period charm at the Lavenham Great House in rural Suffolk. This 5-star hotel and restaurant provides stylish rooms with free Wi-Fi and a complimentary decanter of sherry.
Score from 73 reviews Superb
Practically everything, food, everything was comfortable and the staff were all very friendly especially Trish, and Joe, (who recommended some other good pubs in the area with real ale!)
Only tiny fault was that our room did not have a lot of storage space, especially as we were staying for a week.
Our comfortable room was of a decent size. Delicious dinner - pan-fried scallops and tempura prawns, rib-eye steak with peppercorn sauce, chocolate torte - at a very fair price. Outstanding breakfast - smoked haddock, poached egg, hollandaise and salmon caviar for me, but plenty of choice.
My request for twin beds was not passed to the hotel, but Tricia sorted that out quickly and to our entire satisfaction. Rhubarb semifreddo was delicious, but the poached rhubarb sticks underneath were pretty well raw.
We loved it would visit again
Our room was above the bar and very noisey late at night. Could here all conversations !
The inn in itself is worth a visit. Excellent cuisine!!!
Location is superb, easy to get to a range of visitor locations. Friendly and professional staff. We didn't want to leave!!
A little more choice of vegetarian and plain food would have made the visit perfect
This is a pub well situated for East Suffolk and Essex visits - particularly Constable country - easy access ,but far enough a way for one not to be financially stung. A comfortable old building, attractive bars, and very good food, a common mneu for bar and restaurant area, but this is not ordinary pub food. The menu is well balanced and very well prepared food and well served. There is also a good pub garden for drinking or eating. This quality is obviously well recognised by the locality - for the Thursday summer evening we were staying the eating areas and bars were comfortable full, with some second covers. The breakfast and breakfast room is particularly attractive Our bedroom was commodious and very comfortable and well appoointed. The staff were diligent and very pleasant. Over all a very good eeperience.
If you are of an age . accept the offer of help to get your cases up the narrow , steep staircase.
Room was comfortable.
Breakfast very slow in coming and very average - not what it was cracked up to be. Noisy night with rural traffic.
Pub was in a good location, and full of character
Ordered rump of lamb, got gristle neck of lamb instead..some of it was inedible.. Room backed on courtyard..bit noisy in morning due to brewery diliveries.
The location is perfect for relaxing. The inn itself is quaint - old beams, historical photographs of the inn and village from way back (!)charming décor and full of character. The staff were excellent, very accommodating, helpful and courteous at all times. The food was amazing; lots of choice and delicious. We stayed in room 1 which was a spacious double aspect room with lovely antique furniture. We would definitely stay again, we had a great time relaxing in the courtyard eating and drinking! Also, the breakfast is incredible!
Nothing - what's not to like!?
Full of character with lovely staff especially Joe who went that extra mile to find us a taxi when we had run out of cash.
Nothing, every thing was perfect. One tip though, take plenty of cash as cash points are non existent. Nearest is Colchester!
PRETTY WELL EVERYTHING. Staff polite and obliging, room always clean and tidy. Breakfasts first rate.
No tray in shower to hold shower gels, sponge etc. Had to place them on the floor. Not really a major problem though.
Friendly service and traditional country pub atmosphere.
Food a bit hit and miss but mostly a hit.
A nice room but only after I complained that the one offered smelt musty and was airless and dark.
The fact that we were was given a room that smelt musty and was airless and dark. We had to wait along time for breakfast possibly because they were short staffed? Breakfast was adequate - nothing special.
Fantastic breakfast, with lots of extra touches such as summer fruit compote, thick yogurt served in individual jars and mini bottles of fresh milk. Very friendly, helpful staff, nothing was too much trouble.
Bedroom needed complete redecoration wallpaper in bathroom torn curtains did not eliminate light
Nice special touches in a lovely atmosphere typical of the Dedham Vale. Will recommend to friends. Well done and thank you.
Nice staff, nice place
Nothing worth mentioning
Restaurant menu was excellent
Room was lovely. Food was great. Breakfast was outstanding.
Being able to go for a country walk before breakfast.
Hitting my head on the way to the bathroom! This my fault; it was adequately noticed.
Good restaurant and breakfast
Upgraded to a Superior room, by the owner, at no extra cost, as it was our anniversary. Superb quality establishment which has continuously improved over time (we first stayed here over 7 years ago). Sumptuous furnishings and attention to detail, make it like a home from home. Excellent quality cuisine and nothing is too much trouble for the staff, who were so friendly and really made us feel welcome back (some were still there from 7 years ago, which tells it's own story too!)
Only spending the one night there, as it was fully booked for the previous 2 nights (not surprisingly!!)
Very warm welcome food excellent so were very satisfied with our visit.
We stayed in room 6 very comfortable but could not open window so no ventilation possible.
Tastefull decor and warm welcome from staff
