We all agreed that the black cow was one of the nicest places we've stayed in. From the moment we arrived, we were made to feel welcome. The rooms are small but compact. They were both well finished and the showers were lovely. The food was always top class. On Sunday we arrived for dinner at 7.20pm, not realising last orders were at 7. We expected to be served the tail end of the carvery but it was delicious!! The beef was still medium rare and the chef had even cooked us fresh Yorkshire puddings!!! I could not fault our stay one bit and would certainly love to return again!!
Ambience, friendliness of staff, good local beer, quiet modern bedroom decor and furniture, easy to find, parking
Small bedroom and very small bathroom. Early breakfast only.

Bar staff Food - dinner and breakfast Clean and tidy Nice mix of locals and tourists Other familes with young children welcome
Food and ambiance.
Good country pub with rooms. Nice beer nice food. Comfy clean room. We preordered breakfast. Tick a list the night before of what you would like and at what time and it's ready for you. Definately recommended
Difficult to find
Good location, only 20 mins away from Alton Towers (the purpose of our visit) along some B roads, which worked out better than the more popular A roads as there was NO traffic to contend with. Lovely good sized clean rooms with a hearty breakfast to set us all up for the day.
Bathroom sink taps were poorly installed and turned when you tried to turn them on. Our room was directly on top of the outside smoking area so the smoke and noise below traveled directly into the bedroom, as it was so hot we had to leave the window open and it was difficult to get the kids to sleep with the noise, the cigarette pollution was more concerning. WiFi although available was only running at 0.2mbps a minor niggle again amplified by having kids with me who get more annoyed by these modern day issues!
Nice quant place breakfast very good
Disco to the early hours and the second room proved very small
Friendly and helpful welcome. Spacious little suite of rooms. Very comfy bed. Very quiet village setting.
Lack of notice about noise level as function in room below - a quiet room had been requested. Limited choice for breakfast - no fruit or yoghurt, only 4 cereals to choose from.
We stayed in the family room which was a double room, a single room and a bathroom with roll top bath, all excellent. Lovely food and very accommodating - we had delicious roast beef Sunday evening after our friends had left, brought out to us in the sunshine. Breakfasts also excellent. Lovely peaceful location and friendly helpful staff, thank you.
Staff friendly and attentive. Good breakfast. Room was clean and well stocked - tea, biscuits etc and toiletries.
Room, even for a single, was very small.
Very friendly staff and excellent food
Really friendly and helpful staff, excellent food.
Bed a little soft for my liking
The staff were incredibly friendly and the locals. The room was lovely and fresh feeling.
Excellent small accommodation
Location ideal for ramblers. Bar area small but cosy. Staff where friendly.
Noise of other residents returning to their room at night. Walls are very thin and the table and crockery in our room shook when anyone was walking past the room. Evening meal was too bland and expensive. Lamb shank was served up in a "bowl" swimming in gravy.
- Close to Alton Towers - Jon is amazing employee, friendly and attentive
- Bit hot
Friendly staff.Good bar and breakfast.
Beds narrow,kept falling out.
This is a traditional country pub with a lovely atmosphere. Although the rooms and ensuites are quite small they are very clean and modern. The manager and staff are very welcoming. Everyone was friendly, polite and helpful when we visited. We had an evening meal and it was fabulous - perfectly cooked steak and amazing chips, served with salad, tomato and massive onion rings! I had a crème brulee and shortbread for desert and it was heavenly! The breakfast the next morning was also excellent.
Nothing! We would go out of our way to stay here again!
A little run down could do with some repair works to bring back to a decent standard
Perfect English village and on a perfect English summer day
The staff were very helpful and friendly, meals were exceptionally good, relaxed atmosphere, beautiful location.
Size of en suite and shower cubicle rather small, coffee cups in room were not washed or replaced after use, only rinsed, beds not made in the morning. However, this was our second visit and we won't let the above prevent us from future visits :)
Made to feel welcome lovely food of the evening and a good base for exploring the area
very clean, and friendly
