We had the last room available so ended up in the very back of the hotel
(room 9). When we arrived it was warm enough to sit outside and have a
drink. We chose this hotel for the riverside location and decided to
have our evening meal here also but when we went down for our meal we
were shown into a back room, to a small table in front of the main
access to the toilets. When we asked to be seated in the conservatory we
were told it wasn't open as there were 3 rooms and only 2 staff. We
enquired why there was a family of 3 eating in there and the reply was
they had ordered food outside and had brought it in with them and
didn't need waitress service. This we later discovered was not the
case. Having accepted this excuse, we were annoyed to then see a couple
taking a table in the conservatory? When my wife enquired why this was
allowable the excuse was this couple had been married here on a previous
occasion and preferred to be seated in the conservatory. My wife
explained that we also were on our anniversary weekend (true) and wished
to be seated in the conservatory as previously request. To our amazement
the reply from the manager was along the line of "well if you are
strong enough to argue your case they are not going to stop you"!
By the way the restaurant was very quiet and the available staff could easily cater for diners wherever they sat!!
When we received our bill we notice by wife had been charged £2,50 for a side order of onion rings, which she had not ordered. I pointed this out to the waitress and then this had to be checked by a further 2 people, it became really embarrassing.
This hotel staff really need lessons in customer care and courtesy, although the hotel had a nice setting we will not be returning.
TOP TIP - If you do decide to visit ask for bedrooms 1 to 5 as these appear to have riverside views.
Hotels location by the river, food was nice
