Nestled in the Eskdale Valley, Bower House is 4 miles from the Cumbrian coast. This 17th century inn offers superb food in its restaurant and rooms with en suite bathrooms.
Score from 99 reviews Very good
With stunning views of the surrounding fells The Strands Hotel/Inn sits in the heart of Wasdale Valley. All rooms are en suite and traditional Cumbrian food is on the menu.

The location, Lovely evening meal
£10 for a pint of Fosters and a glass of wine. Noisy room, right over kitchen and extractor vent. Very poor breakfast, all pre cooked and tinned mushrooms and tomatoes - milk on table had not been refreshed at all and was actually yogurt
Good food and beer in front of a warming fire in the bar
Dining room was chilly
Sitting eating dinner by the fire. Good packed lunche and food in general. Staff were very accommodating.
Very enjoyable weekend and stay with very friendly staff. The full English breakfast was very nice to wake up to on a morning and i can't fault the evening meals in the pub. I would defiantly recommend staying here and a visit to wasdale lake is a must!
Warm and friendly welcome, good service, wholesome food.
We had a room for one night. It was small but clean and warm, with a lovely view of the river. The breakfast was excellent, a short but pleasant stay.
The floorboards creaked a lot which you'd expect in an old Inn.
The room was large with a double bed and bunk beds. The pub downstairs was nice and served great food. Breakfast was also included and was a typical English style breakfast.
Very remote location in the Lake District. Nothing around for miles! Some reviewers might see this as a positive, but we had driven for miles in the dark on very narrow back roads to get there. Bathroom was OK, but there was a place on the floor near the shower where the water had rotted the wood.
The location - superb setting and the gateway to Wast Water one of the loveliest of the Cumbrian lakes. The staff - always pleasant and helpful The bar - a splendid range of real ales available
Didn't appreciate the big gap in the window frame allowing a constant draught of cold air into the bedroom (Room 8) although the room was otherwise warm. Plus little things like the plastic bread for breakfast (and the truly awful marmalade).
decent breakfast, rooms tidy and clean. nice country side around.
it was cold inside our room (with outside temperatures around zero), especially during the night. you can hear lot of noise from the corridor and other rooms.
Excellent location. Real fires. Oak beamed ceilings in bar. Courteous and helpful staff. Excellent, home cooked meals. Good value for money. Really hot, powerful shower. Very comfortable bed. Very pleasant ambience.
Very little negative to report, the en-suite bathroom was a bit small but this is due to the constraints of an old building.
Great country pub atmosphere. Good food and not expensive. Friendly helpful staff. Very comfortable, modern, clean bedrooms. Excellent breakfast.
the old worldliness of the place, no modern plastic pub. relaxed and easy going place to unwind. good open fire
lighting in room on the low side could be brighter using the new type led lights
Lovely place to stay. Rooms were immaculate, and the bed was very comfy. Food was nice and fairly priced, breakfast was delicious. Cosy little place in a beautiful location. Would definitely recommend.
Location was very good for Eskdale Good breakfast
Bar food was a let down bed was too hard for me
Great food and beer
Warm fire Area its in Clean and tidy (shabby Chic)
Not enough choice on menu , mostly tapas , would have prefered more "home made" pies, meats etc. Breakfast room tables just to small for 3 large plates and cold area to eat. Not a total mess bit pricey had two family rooms each for 3 people £100/ room this out of season Nov
Warm welcome, warm room, and good evening meal selection available. We had two small dogs with us - no problem at all.
A very small point - the WiFi was slow, but that may be to do with the remote location !
Tired decor Poor cooked breakfast Over priced
Breakfast was good Staff were friendly
I booked a family room for me and 3 of my friends yet the little things like enough towels were not prepared; lady at reception said she thought only 2 people were staying, dust on top of wardrobe, noise disturbing sleep due to event downstairs
Lovely clean room and a gigantic bed. Good bar and atmosphere. Scenery nearby is fabulous. Food was ok.
Can't think of anything.
Food Price room noise
The shower was fabulous, loads of hot water and was all new and very clean. The bed was big and comfy, spotless linen, spare pillows and a great view from the window overlooking the river and the bridge. Room tray has a good selection of hot drinks, everything was very clean and the furniture looked new. It was a small room but we didn't find that a problem. The breakfast was well prepared, we didn't try the full English but our poached eggs were perfect and a good selection of cereals. Evening meals are served in the bar or in the quieter dining room. Food was reasonable, I've had better but not bad for pub grub if a bit pricey.
This was exactly what we expected. A good country inn with comfortable rooms and good food in the bar. Above and beyond: we had asked for a twin room for our kids and were given two rooms with an adjoining bathroom, which was perfect!
Nice breakfast, country pub atmosphere
Basic rooms not as pictured on the Internet, maybe we got the room that hadn't been modernised. Over priced for what we got. Think you might have to be a regular to get served at the bar.
