It became the Duke of Devonshire's property around 1830 and in the early 1970s was rebuilt as the Cavendish by Chatsworth Estate. The original character was preserved and the Duchess of Devonshire selected the decor and furnishings, some of which came from Chatsworth House itself.
The wine list offers about 70 different wines, ranging from classics to exciting New World wines. There is an extensive half-bottle selection and many wines are offered by the glass.
The superior rooms are generally larger rooms which occupy the original Peacock Inn (with the exception of two) and include four poster, brass
or king size beds, luxury bathrooms, fine art and antique furniture. Many feature original iron fireplaces.

The relaxed but attentive service which was personalised, was excellent. The food too was good. Desite being very busy everything ran efficiently. not a complaint but a useful addition would be a boot cleaning service with somewhere to leave boots/clean them after walks. |

The hotel is warm and cosy; the lounge in particular is very welcoming. The food in the restaurant was excellent. The walk from the hotel to Chatsworth is superb. The walk to the room was down a cold glass corridor. |

Greeted by the proprietor, very comfortable room with good attention to detail, interesting corridors, a beautiful view from our bedroom window, breakfast served until midday on Sunday, relaxing sofas in public rooms. the fact that the service charge was added on afterwards and not expected in the price, the fires were not lit in the public rooms although it was chilly. |

The view from our bedroom was wonderful and we had two comfortable chairs to sit and enjoy it. The restaurant was good but quite expensive -for both dinner and breakfast. |

Excellent Location, Comfort, and Service. Close to visitor attractions, and an excellent rest for the weary traveller. Room 2 has a fan above it on the roof, but the staff did turn this off after asking. |

Beautiful location good food and service Booking .com did not specify, when we made the reservation that a specific time needed to be booked for dinner.This was required to be made before checking in. We arrived at 4:00 pm and the only seatings remaining for dinner were for 7:00 and 9:15 pm.Neither was what we wanted, and at £275 gbp per night we wanted it to be perfect! This put a damper on our romantic weekend stay and kept us up late at night unable to digest our delicious meal properly.This over site was not the fault of the hotel,nor was it our fault,I blame Booking.com! Think about it!!! |

Perfect location for discovering the Peak district. Although the hotel is situated just on the main road with a horrific traffic the room we stayed in looked to the meadows at the back and was totally quiet. Clean and comfortable. Considering British price-levels a good value for money. just the snobbish waiter in the bar |

The welcoming hospitality was excellent as was the food I thought for the price the quality of bed was poor. We had a very small double bed and the mattress had seen better days. OK for a cheap hotel but this wan't cheap and does not aspire to being cheap |

The hot chocolate in the rooms was quite nice Hotel is very overpriced. We paid the extra for a Superior Room but it was far from Superior. 2 single beds pushed together and they were far from comfortable. The food is expensive and only average. Cooked breakfast is £18.... ? they must have fed the pig caviar to justify the cost for sausage & bacon. Left a large bottle of expensive aftershave in the bathroom - amazingly they didnt find... |

The excellent location and the friendly staff were stand out features but the room was also luxurious the fact that breakfast was £18 per person and not included in the price and there are no shower caps in bedrooms! |

The luxury and opulence whilst still retaining a friendly informal attitude to guests was refreshing. Most of the staff were very helpful. Facilities were good and the bed very comfortable. The Cavendish Hotel was perfect in almost every way. We felt a little neglected after the main course was served - it took a while for the waiter to ask for our dessert order, and the chef forgot our black pudding at breakfast time. We had to request it and it arrived just before we finished our breakfasts. |
