With oak beams and open fires, this charming 17th-century inn features a leafy garden and traditional restaurant. The Roebuck is on route A22, on the edge of Royal Ashdown Forest.
Score from 386 reviews Very good
Fabulous venue despite very recent takeover. Special thanks to Ellie, wonderful host.
The location is great - quiet pretty village. The food is good. The pub is lovely, with great garden/field out the back.
The worn out decor (but they are gradually doing up the rooms). Even if the decor is tired, it could still be clean! The stairs up to the rooms are really grubby.
Such a conscientious manager - Simon, nothing was too much trouble. Lovely location, although travelling from the Goodwood Revival, it wasn't the easiest of roads to navigate.
Bedrooms need a facelift. Bit odd having to use the fire escape to exit the premises before 8am. so as not to set off the alarms in the Public areas.
Very friendly great welcome good food spacious room
Bit dated decor although made most of it. Unfortunately although a very peaceful village there was an appliance under our room that was noisy and disturbed our sleep
Great value, room was very comfortable and had everything you could need. Breakfast was fantastic and everyone who works there was incredibly friendly. Had dinner in the pub which was great! Recommend the wild boar burger.
We love the location - a tiny sleepy village in deepest countryside yet 10 mins from Gatwick. The pub is great and so is the food. The service is excellent.
Upstairs seems to be in need of a bit of help - sheets and towels are a bit old, tv not working properly. Just little things that would not take much to fix.
Room could do with a male over.
Good food, friendly staff, large rooms.
Poor showers in both rooms, so had to wash hair under bath tap. not easy. No hot water one morning!
Nice views, good location. Helpful and friendly staff.
The room needs some TLC. Cleanliness could be improved. White shower curtain had turned orange. The same with the white grouting in the bath room. Some of the towels were almost " rags". Dusty headboards and bedside lights. Initially the sheets were not fresh.
in a lovely peaceful village setting
Most everything else! The room was incredibly grotty - old furniture, BEDS (I was in agony all the next day), the bathroom was grubby with no water pressure , bare grubby floors, the toilet backed up when flushed, the tv did not work most of the time and stopped completely if you changed channels (and was pre set so low it was impossible to hear anyway). The hall/stair carpet was in holes and rooms desperate for redecoration. Breakfast was supplied "begrudgingly" with everything having to be requested, not offered. The mirror hadn't been hung up, just left in middle of room, the drawers were full of waste paper, etc. etc. AWFUL. We travel a lot so are well experienced. These owners need a serious rocket. Don't stay there!
a very nice place, a very good pub
Having been on the road forward whole week and being away from home I had struggled to hold a conversation with anyone until arriving at The Chequers. The staff and customers from around this tiny village were very polite and friendly and this made my night at The Chequers brilliant. The food was excellent if a little expensive and I would like to stay there again if the opportunity arises.
The staff were really lovely and helpful. Great location to airport.
Great place to stay, friendly staff, excellent food ,would stay again for sure. Nice country pub offering B&B.
Bathroom decor tired looking( water stain on roof ). Just needs a bit of TLC !!
The staff were very friendly & helpful and the setting was beautiful. We had a large room with good amenities. The food in the pub was very good too.
good value for money, very close to Horsham so it works for me
Needs to be updated, room looking very tired hencs cost!
pleasant large rooms
The setting is beautiful and rural, though not too far off the beaten track. The room was clean and the bed extremely comfortable. Excellent breakfast and friendly service.
The location, the calm, the large room, the open terrace at the back side, the welcome from Simon and Matt...
A little ptoblem with the bedside lamps, much too dark for a comfortable lecture! We had to take off the lamp-shade!
The staff was friendly, helpful. The location is all one could hope for in a quiet, beautiful English village. We were able to take an idyllic walk, rambling down a country lane; also visited the church where we met the local historian who was wonderfully knowledgeable and interesting--a real treasure! Pub of Chequers was fun to eat in; good food, cozy and atmospheric lounge. Room was spacious and comfortable. We would return if ever in the area again.
Not quite as clean as we would have liked, but tolerable.
Warm and welcoming. Excellent facilities, food and staff. A great English village
The Chequers setting was quite beautiful, in a quintessential village.
The bedroom was of reasonable standard but the bathroom needed updating and modernising.
staff couldn't do enough made sure we had everything we needed at all times food excellent
The room was good The restaurant food was very good
Good quiet location with excellent dining.
If you want to check out early pay the night before you leave otherwise you have to hang about till the staff are up.
