Location excellent and the food was outstanding. However the hotel adds a 3% charge for credit card payment which they should absorb into the cost of the accommodation and/or food. We were a bit annoyed about this as there was no notice of charge prior to booking so perhaps this should be flagged on screen at time of bookin.

A very impressive looking hotel, very convenient for the Minster and Art Gallery. It also has its own car park, a great advantage. Didn't eat at the hotel, but enjoyed relaxing in the bar, listening to the excellent jazz.

Character of hotel, location and especially the staff. We have visited the hotel several times over the years and found the hotel to be consistently good. Could not complain about anything.

Having spent most of my adult life living in Hotel's all over the World - often five star and considered top-notch, including such as the Raffles (Singapore), Galleface (Sri Lanka), and so on; without doubt 'The Churchill' provides all that these others do, with the informality of a smaller but excellent Hotel! Highly Recommended!

Have stayed b4, last July. In 'old ' part of building. At that time we had nothing but praise for location, room, service, food. Etc.10/10 and then rebooked for current visit On this occassion we were put into a dolls house room..9 Or 10 inches of space between bed and walls and about 2 feet of workable space at base of bed......if we'd known we would have paid for a better room..most other rooms looked bigger when we looked at rooms being serviced as we went to breakfast - issues at reception when we booked in. staff were in a back office talking..need a bell or knock through rear wall into office - issues trying to get a second key card - tv..no instrutions on use of tv..could not find 'tv guide' on tv - Tea/ Coffee facilities...2 t/2coffee/one drinking choc/one pack of biccies available only..with 3 biccies in pack. - Room took a long time to warm up Overall a really good hotel, location and food but spoilt by the few points above

Lovely room. The fact it had car parking facilities was great as not to many hotels do. The short walk into town isn't a problem. We were in the newer part of the hotel and found the noise from doors banging was annoying in the morning even as early as 7.30am. We didn't have breakfast included in our room but were told it was nearly £10 this is quite expensive and ended up going into town and getting a lovely English breakfast for £6. Trains can be heard going by if you have the window open which we did.

Excellent location meant we could park up and not drive for the 2 days we spent there. Room was very small and uncomfortably hot (even with radiator off and window open as far as it would go

No complaints at all. Family room was as advertised. Room nice and quiet and housekeeping was excellent. Staff very friendly and could not do enough to help. Only a short taxi ride from the station and short walk to the Minster. The Churchill had a quaint little wooden "smoking bunker" outside which was a nice touch for the smokers. Would go back and would recommend to friends.

Close to York center. Staff were welcoming and helpful. Hotel was next to a railway line. The room was small and the four poster was a modern version. The price was expensive for one night not what I would class as a luxury room as described. The breakfast was nice but nothing out of the ordinary.

Clean room, nice building and close to York. Free WIFI. I paid extra for a superior double. The room had no windows and only a skylight. It was small and didnt even have a wardrobe - only a wooden frame which could be used to hang things. I found this like a prison cell. TV mounted on the right wall not the facing one - so difficult to watch. No bath only shower. I checked with reception that this was a superior room - they said it was. £120 for a night excl breakfast is too expensive - the photos from the site did not match up with my experience. I didnt complain as it was only for one night, so I didnt give them a chance to change my room (should I have to?).

The only good thing I can say is that the Staff were friendly and efficient The room was small and hot with very restricted ventilation, the small window was fixed by a chain screwed into the frame so that it could only be opened to a pre set amount I feel this may have been a safety issue. I believe that we had unfortunately booked at the same time as a wedding party and as such the hotel was extremely noisy with loud conversations and doors slamming until at least 3 a.m. on both Friday and Saturday nights, it was certainly not conducive to a good nights sleep. My experience of this Hotel was extremely poor and I would not stay again nor recommend it to others.

The hotel does have a certain ambiance and interesting history. It is conveniently located within easy walking distance to York Minster and all the attractions one wants to see. The parking lot is extremely tight, in parts you have to back out long distances as there is not enough room to turn around. The stone archway entry is chipped on both sides from drivers not being able to maneuver the tight turn.

The shower was top notch The staff were quite off hand when we arrived, they were gearing up for a large lunch party and a wedding reception and our arrival clearly presented an obstacle to their plans. They would not serve us a drink in the bar because normal opening time was at 17.00 even though the bar was all switched o and it was clear that both the lunch group and the wedding guests would have no problem getting a drink - we were definitely second class citizens!

The service from the hotel staff was excellent. The room we had in the original house was very comfortable. The breakfast was very good especially the eggs benedict. The pillows were not very comfortable and the hotel should provide a couple of extra ones (stored in the wardrobe) as other comparable hotels do.

Hotel in good walking distance to city centre. Cleanliness of room could have been better. Room was not prepared according to booked request (baby cot was missing, although booked and pre-paid), One morning, the bread served for breakfast had gone mouldy. That must not happen!

We booked on line. I had to call the bookong agent for confirmation of a lift, or first floor room at our selected hotel. As there was neither, they looked for a hotel with our preference, and came up with the Churchill - thankfully. The staff are so welcoming and friendly. Nothing was too much trouble. My husband and I were struck with food poisonong on our second day- not from anything at the hotel - and the staff were so considerate and helpful. We were not disturbed, unless we asked for something, and when we were up and about, the room was cleaned and left spotless. I would have no hesitation about a return visit. Nor would I hesitate in recommending it to family or friends. This is only an observation, and in no way reflects on the hotel staff. When we were ill, and I asked for a doctor, I was told that their doctor would either tell me to call our own doctor, or nhs 24. I suggest that they confirm with their doctor that he/she would come out, as we were temporary residents in their catchment area.

The room was terrible! Too small with only one small window looking into a room opposite. The bed was also too small and not very comfortable. The way to the rooms is through a long and dark hallway... not very pleasant. Not a hotel for us to return at!
