Banwell
This 18th-century, Grade II heritage-listed building is situated in the village of Llanymynech, which straddles the border of England and Wales. Located on the Offas Dyke long-distance footpath and now under new management, the Cross Keys is a charming, comfortable base for hiking trips and for exploring the beautiful countryside and local heritage sites. The surrounding landscape offers waterfalls, lakes and mountains. The Welsh border is a few feet away and the historic towns of Shrewsbury and Oswestry are within easy reach. The restaurant serves excellent modern British food with an emphasis on fine, fresh, free-range local produce. Behind the hotel is private parking for guests. There is space for up to 15 cars. It was very child and dog friendly, and the breakfast included in the price was fantastic. I can appreciate the price that I paid, £60 for a family of four with four fantastic breakfasts plus sausage for the dog was good value for money inspite of the tired and dated room, although I think the owner takes the upkeep of the hotel on himself which resulted in the room and bathroom not being cleaned properly. Although it gave a good excuse to spend the evening in the bar downstairs where we spent a lovely time as a family playing pool!

location in the village It was filthy - toenails on the floor in the bedroom. Divan not big enough for the mattress - poor quality mattress. Cold - no heating, quilts such poor quality that did not warm us up. Poor welcome - when we arrived & at breakfast told we were the last guests and made to feel uncomfortable even though we were in down 15 mins before end of service. Not enough juice for a family of 5 Had booked & paid for 3 en suite bedroms and 3rd bedroom had shared bathroom, although they did change this

En route on our John O Graots to Lands End bike ride and cheap It was almost unbelievable that such an establishment is allowed to trade. We had real concerns about safety, especially of electrical appliances and fire risk. Our loo did not flush properly and the thermostat on the shower was faulty which meant icy cold or scaldingly hot water.

Very little. No food available in evening but breakfast was fine with fresh fruit available. Hotel shows signs of severe neglect. Rooms appeared basically clean but shabby but, on closer inspection, there had been little attempt at other than superficial cleaning.

The breakfast, even though it was a ltlle fatty and greasy. The cleanliness. The bedroom floor was filthy. The shower was dirty, so I did not have a shower. The entrance to the hotel was filthy. The overall impression of lack of cleanliness made one feel "unclean". So near the main road, awoken at 5am. By constant traffic.

Obliging, hospitable landlord and a very good, simple, value for money evening meal. Gloomy, rather tatty and not overly clean bedroom. The whole place looks worn out.

It was a convenient hotel for us and the price was right. We wanted a local, familiar place, an the Cross Keys was ideal.Breakfast was excellent, and the owners and staff friendly and helpful. Needs some updating, but then most 18th Centrury places do!

The Manager was extremely friendly and helpful. His prices for a snack at evening tme was very cheap indeed. The Hotel is in need of complete refurbishment. the manager hasn't been there for too long and he appears to be making plans to improve the physical state of the building. My three night stay was more than adequate and reasonable in price. I thus wouldn't "Star" the Hotel but would give a "Five Star Rating" to the Mnager! who couldn't hae been more helpful.

Allowed dogs. Evening meal excellent value for money. Although allowing dogs, there was no outside area suitable for them. Although breakfast good first day, it was poor on the second. The hotel was very 'tired' - it was 'tatty' and 'grubby'. The bed was held together with duct tape, was very squeaky and the mattress was very saggy. The whole hotel smelt of stale tobacco smoke.

Landlord was very chatty and all staff we met were nice. Hotel chosen purely for it's lcoation on the Offa's Dyke Path - fairly basic accomodation, but we didn't need anything fancy.

Cheap, food fine, decor a bit shabby, but you get what you pay for! Shower not en suite, and shower room shared with other people - and the toilet. The lightbulb in other toilet had gone. Room had smallest kettle in the world, and coffee not replaced after first day.

The price- cheaper than alternatives in the area. Convenient for Lake Vyrnwy. The shower was difficult to get at the right temperature- it tended to be very hot or very cold.

The owner of the keys was very friendly and made us feel very welcome. Compared to the bodiris, which we stayed in the night before the cross keys was massively disappointing. The room was right at the top of the building which meant the shower did not work properly going from very cold to very hot. The waterpipes made a horrible squealing noise during the early hours

Very friendly pub with good food and beer at good prices, the sandwiches in my packed lunch were the best I've ever had anywhere! For cheap no- nonsense accomodation it was fine. It's a large building and really needs some money spending on it, not likely in these straightened times?

The 'curate's egg' nature of the place. A lot of characters and the feeling of an old and important building. The manager was very helpful and the food was great value. The showers were appalling, but that didn't matter - the eccentricities of the place made up for that!

Very old building, so quite characterful (not a right-angle in the whole place). Not a bad thing, but the rooms - or, at least, my room was a bit tired. Host attentive, seemed to be doing everything (running pub too) but still had time for guests. Good rate for room (£35). Catered for coeliacs (requested on booking, provided gluten-free bread for breakfast). Tea and coffee in rooms - nice big mugs too! Good for a stop-over, or if you're visiting the countryside nearby (beautiful area) although it is on the main road (a483) so can be noisy if you're on the front. Shower didn't work, but said they were not aware and would get if fixed (Room 5).

We were given extremely good, individual service by the Manager, Malcolm Jackson. He went to the trouble of cooking a meal specially for us, taking into consideration that I have to have a gluten free diet. The meal was delicious, hot and filling - just perfect for the end of a day's walking. He had also, gone and bought some gluten free bread and pretzels which I really appreciated. The breakfast was also very nicely cooked and presented. Malcolm is a delightful character and we wish him success in his venture at the Cross Keys. The girl working behind the bar was also a very nice, intelligent girl - very pleasant to talk to. Furnishing wise, the room was fairly basic, but it was clean and adequate for our needs.
