Set in a stunning location on Wells Cathedral Green, facing the West Front, the Ancient Gatehouse is well positioned for discovering Somerset's historic beauty spots.
Score from 139 reviews Good
This restored 15th century coaching inn is situated in the heart of the small medieval city of Wells, by the cathedral green, just metres away from the ancient marketplace.
Score from 182 reviews Good
Lovely building, with character.
Fantastic position and free parking. Atmospheric hotel with some nice modern touches. A lively bar and an excellent Bistro using locally sourced produce. Exceptionally good value and you wake up to the sound of the cathedral bells. What is not to like about that.
Service in The Penn Bar was a bit slow for a Saturday night crowd.
comfortable room, great location, good food
wifi didn't reach our room on top floor
The location is fantastic and the old hotel has loads of character. Our room overlooked the market place and the Cathedral beyond. Incomparable views! The breakfast was very good, especially the scranbled egg and smoked salmon. Parking is excellent too.
The shower room was very small and in need of refitting. The central heating refused to work but we did have the benefit of a portable electric heater. It would be good to have warm plates for the hot breakfast dish. How about making a cosy lounge with a real log fire for winter visitors? Some of the staircarpet and some of the upholstery in the bar needs urgent replacement. The night door key arrangement needs checking as our key semed not to work and we were lucky to be let in by a drinker in the bar!
Good central location in the heart of Wells. Good food in a pleasant restaurant. Vibrant bar.
Do not sleep at the front on the nigh before the market stalls are put up....starts at 5 a.m.!!!!!!!!!
Great location, space and ambience, friendly and helpful staff, excellent breakfast
Position of hotel in Wells - on main square but very quiet. Welcome from all staff. I felt comfortable in the hotel as a lone female.
That I could not stay longer
Traditional old coaching inn
Hitting my head on doorway !
room one of our friends had was not very good only small shower w.c
Staff welcoming and helpful. Food excellent, when available !. Location was excellent for us, as we had to attend a service at the Cathedral, and the shops were close.
Market setting up at 0430 hrs on Saturday. We were not told in advance that there would be no food served on the evening of the 1/1/15 in the restaurant. We had to have a sandwich and a packet of crisps from the Coop !
Beautiful, historic hotel in the heart of this lovely city, overlooking the Market Square - perfect location. My single room was small but comfortable and perfectly OK. Good breakfast.
Parking area very cramped and not for the faint-hearted!
Location right in center of city next to cathedral and shops. Great character pub.
Mattress was terrible, lumpy and hard. Wind blowing in around old windows. No ashtray or cig butt receptacle so, butts all over the ground at both front and rear entrances.
Good location, pleasant room overlooking the Market Square, excellent food.
Car park was difficult to get into and out of. Functionality of the en-suite was not brilliant, particularly the shower.
Location and wasn't, as noisy as I expected considering the Sat. Market. Excellent breakfast.
friendly, helpful staff. good location. decent food. the wonderful collection of Anton cartoons in the front dining room.
rear dining room lacks character, and with low ceiling is rather noisy.
Friendly staff, excellent location and good breakfast offering.
Some updating needed
Location, ambiance and character in this historic and beautiful historic Somerset city
Room quality, uncomfortable bed, small bathroom
The location The breakfast The view from the room
The car park The evening meal was not up to expectations The dining room was cold
The room was lovely, and the location brilliant. Really clean.
The Staff were very impersonal and insincere, everything seemed so much trouble. The restaurant service was very slow, again with impersonal customer service. I really do dislike be patronised.
The most friendly staff we have encountered for a long time.
Nothing not to like.
Evening meal was very good. Luckily we got in the car park over night. Nice upgraded room with a settee.
Breakfast service a bit slow.
Heating came on at wrong times
