Nice countryside inn. The rooms are comfy, beautifully designed and well equipped. The owner and staff are friendly and eager to help. The doors could be difficult to lock and, once they're locked, very difficult to open. The inn's plumbing is a throwback to its 15th century origin. Those are just minor problems, though.

The continental breakfast put outside our bedroom so we could have 'breakfast in bed'. Eating our dinner by the fire, sitting in armchairs. The music playing loudly in the bar, which was also loud in the bedroom.

The location was good for our purposes. The actual cooking of the food was excellent on both days. The organisation of breakfast was very poor, with the dining room still being dirty from the night before. On our second night the person dealing with breakfast was half an hour late in turning up at the pub, didnt have any help and the tables were completely unlaid. We were told there would be heating on in the evening and first thing in the morning but there was no heating on at all all the time we were there. A convector heater was supplied to us for our room which was smelly and very noisy. There was a shower attachment on the taps but no shower curtain which made it very difficult to shower. We were informed that the pub had been flooded twice during 2012 and perhaps this was the reason for the untidy/dirty condition of some parts of the pub, perhaps they should have cancelled bookings until they got sorted! We would not stay here again.

The food was good , and the atmosphere was good. Unfortunately there had been a flood so there was no draught beers available, but having said that they coped remarkably well.

The location for The Forest of Dean was briliant. I booked a double room at The Crown Inn after looking at the photos on the website. When we arrived we went into the Pub only to be yold that actually the room wasn't in the Pub at all but in one of the houses in the same road. So in fact what I had booked was a room in somebodies house. I never met the lady as the young girl from the pub showed us up to our room. We were told we could use the lounge but I we didn'T. This may suit many people but I don't like staying in someone's house that is why I booked to stay in a pub. It was very misleading. As it was half term and we had driven for 5 hours it was to late to find somewhere else to stay. I put up with it but would never return. Breakfast was served in the pub and was very hit and miss. There was usually something that wasn't cooked properly. We did say something the first moring but after that we decided there was so much food on the plate it was easier just not to eat what wasn't cooked. We had a meal in the pub on the first evening it was ok, but the pub just up the road The Farmer Boy was so much better but a bit more expensive.

The last time my wife and I stayed in such a naturally friendly area was in Northhumberland. My wife had never visited Lea [nr Ross on Wye]and it was so refreshingly friendly having spent four nights in rude Cornwall. If only the Cornish could take a 3 hour trip and learn a little from the fantastic people of the forest of dean they would give their tourist a much better customer service...Its a good job they live in a beautiful county in Cornwall because the people who serve the tourist take it for granted. The crown and the people of the area are fantastic. We loved everything , the people, the food , the music, everything....cannot wait for our next trip 10 out of 10

Nice room, friendly staff, great bar and very pet friendly Good pub food and a great breakfast. I was the only guest but was put in the only non ensuite which was at the front of the pub, above the bar and near the road which got busy at 7 o'clock in the morning. They could have put me in one of the quieter rooms at the back. This wasnt too much of a problem as i had earplugs and wanted an early start but might bother some people.

Everyone was very friendly and the quality of the food was really good. 1) It took nearly 5 minutes for a member of staff to appear to welcome us on arrival and, when she did, she did not seem to know about our booking. 2) The room was not serviced after our first night. Upon our return we were told that this was because we had not left the room open. However, there were no instructions anywhere to tell us that this was what we should have done. 3) The bedroom we had (No.3) had no electrical power available at the two double-socket wall-mounted outlets, one either side of the bed. When I asked a member of staff about this, he replied that they knew there was something wrong with the electrical distribution but that the owners had only been there a year and it had not yet been sorted out! This surely could create a fire hazard, and is not good news! 4) A propos of this, there were a number of extension leads in the bedroom to feed the television and bedside lamps but both these lamps were hard-wired into one standard plug, rather than using two separate plugs or one designed to have multiple appliances wired into it. This is not good practice. 5) In our bathroom I was unable to close the shower doors at all easily because the door fastenings had become extremely loose on the top suspension rollers. I did not want to make yet another minor complaint so I tightened them up myself!

Lovely old coaching inn, full of character. Large size of room with comfortable bed & decent size bathroom. High standard of cleanliness & generous supply of tea/coffee & bathroom requisites. Excellent breakfast. Friendly staff. Superb value for money. Entry & booking in process needs review. However this should not put you off staying at this excellent B&B.

Not a lot. The staff were friendly enough and welcoming . One of the evening meals was quite good. There was plenty of tea and coffee in the room. We visited the Crown having been impressed by the many recommendations and having travelled over 3hrs for a one night say we were very disappointed. First impressions on parking were that it looked a bit scruffy outside and we hadn't realised it was on such a busy and noisy main road ( not the fault of the owners!). Our room could have been pleasant but was claustrophobic and packed with old mismatched bits of furniture. The bathroom was very dark and with no window clearly needed better lighting. The room was clean but the bed was uncomfortable and bedding was very poor quality, it would have benefited greatly from nice crisp white linen bedding. Our evening meals were mixed one reasonable, one poor . We were looking forward to the homemade chips advertised on the menu but they were clearly frozen . Breakfast was a bit of a disaster. We ordered tea and coffee and had to go searching for milk ourselves. The young girl cooking did her best but hadn't cooked poached eggs before, they were like bullets , the rest of it was burnt, and the toast arrived just before we finished eating There were stains on the tablecloth ( small but noticeable) and overall the restaurant area appeared a little jaded and dusty. Sadly the whole place smelt of smoke including our room which was off putting The owners took over last October and are doing their best to make this successful but in our opinion could do with some professional help and advice to realise the potential that the Crown no doubt has..

The 1st time I stayed at the Crown, I was made to feel really welcome, by the staff and locals at the bar. After just a few minutes, it felt like I belonged there. The next time I stayed it was going back to your local. The rooms are excellent, nicely decorated. The food is suberb, and the breakfast will keep you all day long; this is really good for me, as I seldom get time to stop for lunch whilst on the road. The only down side is that I am staying there on business, so my stay is too brief.
