The location and public areas
The room was awful like stepping back in time. Beds were very uncomfortable. Window wouldn't stay open.
Only plus is location, the guy on the front desk was nice when we arrived.
Rooms were not as advertised on website, and stiflingly hot, had to use a book to prop the window open, the bathroom was tiny and grubby looking. On both mornings the shower didn't work (one morning not at all, one morning freezing cold), when it did work it was a dribble. Reluctantly complained whilst at the hotel, over the phone and by e-mail but were treated very unfairly, and then ignored. Really disappointing customer service. Other things to mention are that when our partners went down for breakfast on Saturday morning, they waited for about 20 minutes just to be told 'breakfast isn't on'. Other guests in the hotel were loud in the early hours, lots of noise from the street, and you have to pay £10 for a hairdryer.
The toilet did not flush and there was no hot water. No air con so window had to be propped open with a rubbish bin as didn't stay open on it's own.
great location, right in the middle of the city.
My husband and I decided to go to Chester for 4 days for our 1st anniversary at the end of June, when we looked at the hotel, it had stunning rooms, a lovely bar/ restaurant on site and it was a perfect location. when we arrived however, this was not the case. the room was seriously out of date and dirty. now the room being out of date doesn't really bother me, as a hotel is just somewhere to sleep. But when we return the next day after being out all day, the room hadn't even been cleaned, our bin wasn't emptied, the coffee cups weren't cleaned, the bed wasn't made and our towels wasn't washed, they didnt even give us toilet paper and to top it off there was still documents and trash stuffed in the draws and wardrobe from the previous owners of the hotel when it was called the chester lodge, We were so disgusted with all this, that we came home early and I have to admit the Manager was very nice and gave me back the money for the last day, but when we told him all of this, he was completely oblivious, and he had no idea what we were talking about and told us the hotel is going under refurbishment at the moment, and I told him that if you are planning on putting people in the out of date rooms then put pictures of the out of date rooms on the website, as it was false advertising and deceiving.
Proximity to city centre & tourist sites
The new management are working to improve the appearance and facilities of the hotel. Staff dealt with problem over our double booking issue efficiently.
There was a mix up with our booking - one night hadn't been booked by hotel staff! Rooms, the bathroom in particular, was still unfinished as far as refurb was concerned and looked very out of date.
Great location, lower floors have been up dated/ decorated however where we were on top floor has not.
As our rooms had not been up dated/ decorated they looked very tired and shower was very poor.
I arrived early and was quickly accommodated, and even upgraded. Much appreciated.
Wifi did not work in my room, though it was new to the hotel. Loud noise on a Saturday night outside. My room was at the back of a pub I think that had a disco going till midnight. It was a hot night so with no air con I had the window open.
Beautiful building in excellent location of Chester. Very clean and modern decor excellent value for money.
I particularly liked the location, it was in the centre and perfect for shopping, walking and dining.
As I assume the hotel is a listed building the old sash windows are very thin. We could hear every conversation going on outside the hotel and were woken several times each night including by council workers at 7am on Sunday morning checking the electrical grids.
Location was excellent and the room, bed linen and towels were clean.
I appreciate that the hotel is under new ownership and they are currently in the early stages of a refurb - but if they want to use the photos of refurbished rooms to attract you, on no account should they put you into non-refurbished ones: the difference between the two is simply too enormous. On our experience of a pre-refurbished room, the name change to "The D" stands for Dismal, Depressing and Decidedly Decrepit. The room wasn't simply tired it had long since departed the land of the living. Had we not arrived just before we were due to attend an event - and so had little option other than to accept what was on offer, we would not even have unpacked. The public areas suggest the refurb will turn the place around (we didn't have the opportunity to see any refurbished bedrooms) - but unless they are paying an ironic homage to Rigsby in Rising Damp, they really are risking their reputation by taking money for rooms which are frankly shameful.
Lovely hotel right in the centre of town. Room upgrade was fantastic. Nice bar with a fine looking menu although we had a reservation to eat out so didn't get the chance to partake. Owner on reception was very helpful and courteous, lots of information and booklets with things to do. Shower was superb. Nowt to complain about! All good.
loved it here right in the heart of chester.
The staff were lovely and very friendly.the bed was very comfortable and the pillows were too.it was very quiet and we had a good nights sleep
The room we had was very tired looking.the bathroom was shabby and in order to fill the bath we had to use the shower as well as the taps as the shower would not switch off. The tv in the room didn't have a signal and there were holes in the walls where things had been taken off. However when we did mention this to the manager he explained that the hotel was currently being renovated.
Good location close to shops river and cathedral. Staff very friendly and helpful. Was up graded which was a lovely suprise.
Hotel has recently changed its name to the D some taxi drivers did not know it by the D.
