The Farmers Boy was very nice indeed. The staff were very friendly and efficient, the food excellent and the location perfect, if you're looking for a peaceful weekend away from the city. The room was very tidy and cosy, with an en-suite. The staff had taken the trouble to turn the heating up before our arrival which was very thoughtful. The bed was huge and very comfortable. Just a 10 second walk to the bar was perfect, where you could find a great selection of real ales and ciders and draught beers etc. The food was superb. We were left to sit, unhurried after our meal and enjoy the ambience, which was lovely. Altogether I will certainly return in the future. Well done 'Team Phil'.
Just one small criticism was that the shower was very difficult to control and not very powerful.
Location was perfect for my onward journey, Staff & Breakfast was great, sorry did not have dinner
Water pipes made quite a bit of noise when the room next door used their facilities
Very clean and comfortable. Good restaurant, great pies and breakfasts. Lots of off street parking. Friendly staff, good beer.
Limited room for storage of large suitcases.
Lovely friendly staff. Great food & nice comfortable room, a nice place to stay if you are on your own. Will definitely stay again when on another course.
Wonderful staff, snug accommodation, scrummy food :D
nice friendly waitress on sunday morning! Good bed and shower! kettle and tv. waitress made me a cup of hot chocolate at 10.30-thank you! nice to have fruit salad for breakfast! Many thanks. Also use of ironing board!
tv too high up on wall.
staff very helpful & friendly. rooms comfortable, though the shower cubicle can do with renovation. Location excellent
the evening dinner was excellent though the fish &chips were not easy eating from a board. improvements could be made to the breakfast table, inasmuch the tea was stewed as it was in a flask not in a teapot on our table. service not too good either.
Lovely location friendly staff
Comfortable beds, clean rooms with good facilites, excellent food - especially the pies!!! Pleasant staff who disguise how busy they are and will stop to converse if you wish, location within a mile of May Hill and close to The Forest of Dean, easy to find (if you don't drive too fast!)
Now we really have to be 'picky' - Someone microwaved the new potatoes! (I'm sure the chef won't have known!) We only booked two nights. We could have enjoyed a whole week.
Friendly, helpful staff and excellent food
Very small rooms and no privacy. Able to hear the people in the room next door.
Accommodation was great, all rooms tastefully decorated in different colour schemes. Beautiful old inn full of character and spotlessly clean. The manager Sally was the hub of the workforce and excelled in friendliness and customer service. We felt light royalty whilst in Sally's care. The menu provided a very varied choice of options from vegetarian to all types of meat and fish. The choice of drinks was excellent with a huge selection of wines and the same with real ales. It was an excellent place for 2 nights and I hope to return. We travelled with my elderly parents with mobility difficulties and very restrictive food choices of meat and three veg and they found a great choice, the accommodation was perfect as all on ground floor. Handy for sightseeing too, thank you Sally at FBI.
There was only a couple of things which were little but made a huge difference from this being the perfect break I'd been planning for the last 9 months for my moms 80th birthday present and my dads 82nd to being just a break with no commitment to ensuring the level of service and organisation on the first night was maintained on Sally's day and night off. This totally took the shine off our fantastic experience of the first day and night. Sally helped up choose the perfect table on the flat with easy access for my dad with his mobility difficulties and it also was large enough for the large plates the present the meals on. We booked this table with Sally for break fast for the next 2 mornings and evening meal of which went array and the organisation was not there siring her day off and we had to squeeze into a narrow table which was too small to accommodate all the plates and condiments for 4 and also meant we were restricted in getting in and out due to the slim amount of spaced between tables. Had Sally and her team honoured the reservations we had made with her then I an honestly say this would have been our perfect weekend away for such a momentous and extremely special and well investigated stay. Please out this right for other guests ...it's good to talk and I think that was all that was missing between the staff team. Thanks FBI
The staff were very professional and friendly and obviously enjoyed working there. The big bed was fabulous. The chef went out of his way to help with special dietary requirements. The location is on a main road but this does not affect the accommodation which is set back and all ground level with very easy access to the adjacent car park. The breakfast was lovely with a great choice. Easy access to Gloucester and the Forest of Dean
The food - very good breakfast and lunchtime meal. Rooms detached from the pub away from the road noise (A40) Bathroom with big walk in shower Room size Decor in good condition Convenient location Parking Friendly
Duvet too small for the bed, kept slipping off
The room we were staying in - Room 7 - only had a door dividing it from the next room so we could hear everything from the people occupying it and the TV which stayed on until 2 in the morning which resulted in a lack of sleep.
Good atmosphere Excellent food
Room rather too small for size of bed
We were made to feel very welcome on arrival.Although the room was a bit on the small side it was very cleverly designed to incorporate everything we needed and it had a lovely homely feel. Our son and his family had a room next door so we could see that the rooms are decorated in an individual style. We had requested a travel cot in their room and it was there when we arrived. That evening we ate at The Farmers Boy on site restaurant. The food was fantastic. Plenty of choice and well cooked. An excellent choice of Wines too. Make sure you have some of the Purple Cow Ice cream as well as one of Phils' famous Pies. They were both amazing. The breakfast next morning provided a good choice of continental and full English. The Farmers boy is well situated to visit Ross-on-Wye, Gloucester and the Forest of Dean by car. The atmosphere at The Farmers Boy was friendly and welcoming I really didn't want our stay to end.
The shower in our room needs some attention. It wasn't the same as the one in our sons room which worked fine.
The character of the place, everyone was friendly and lovely food.
Staff very friendly and accommodating. Food excellent. Made to feel very welcome.
Nothing to dislike.
The Inn, The Staff, The Food almost everything
There was nothing not to like
Good food. Choice of good beers. If you like pies - this is the place to be. Despite a party for 56 the first night of our stay, it didn't cause us any inconvenience. Phil the owner was very helpful and friendly.
Layout of rooms a bit strange. Basic but adequate. The smoke detector kept alarming but quickly rectified by staff ripping it off the ceiling!
Location was good for trips around the local area. The food whilst on the expensive side, was well prepared and tasty.A really nice atmosphere in the pub and dining area.Staff were pleasant and helpful but under stress.
The rooms were dated and not very cosy, the shower was poor and the tv remote had no batteries. There was no parking for a disabled person. The normal problem for pubs these days, not enough staff.
Excellent staff, very friendly and helpfull. Room was good size and clean. Fabulous food. Great homely feel. Will recommend and will visit again.
Food and drink were rather expensive.
The food was amazing.
Great breakfast choices.
A clean and comfortable room with an excellent breakfast. We also ate our evening meals in the pub which is on the same level. The food was fresh and good value. The Guiness is excellent with other real ales also available. I recommend this place for food and accomadation if you are visiting The Forest of Dean. The staff are very friendly and helpful.
I have no complaints at all about this pub, staff, food and accommodation. Everything was good!
