Close to old town where there's lots of bars and restaurants and probably lots of better hotels! No Restaurant! Bar closed! Reception always deserted! This is the Mary Celeste of hotels! The Slaughtered Lamb of the south Steer clear!

Location ideal for a family wedding in Stevenage old town Bar & restaurant was not open in the evening, no staff on duty except the receptionist, not very welcoming, atmosphere dull, no towels and no kettle in one of the rooms booked. Would not recommend to family or friends.

The bathroom was very clean. We waited for at least 20 minutes before someone came to check us in. It was made clear that breakfast was NOT avialable on the Sunday morning as this would inconvenience the cook who wanted to be away by 9.30am There were no other facilities open/available to us - no bar, no food. We would not think about staying here again.

In the center of town, this hotel is close to highway A1(M). The train station is just 4oo yards away, so it's just a 25 minute ride to central London. All of the spacious rooms at The gate hotel Stevenage have satellite TV, private bath rooms with a power shower. The gate hotel Stevenage has a bar lounge with Sky Sports. Free parking is available.

Location was good we stayed new years eve and they advised before we checked in that they were not able to offer and bar/restaurant facilities for the duration of stay. There was also no staff around the hotel - had to call a number to get someone from reception to come to the front desk - not had that in a hotel before.

Nice design rooms, not your bog standard. Good facilities, trouser press, iron, hair drier. Friendly and accommodating reception. Quite close to rail, buses and town centre. Best value at that time. Bar seemed closed and no restaurant (or closed). Happy to let you order food in and eat in room, so no real problem unless you have to have breakfast.

The room was really nice Took quiet a while for the staff to check me in, no lift which was difficult as I had quiet a lot of luggage and no offer of help from staff. Room was lovely but other areas of hotel could do with refurbishment

The Gate represents very good value and is a great location for the town centre and Old Town. The rooms are well appointed - coffee and tea making, tv, trouser press etc and was clean and in good condition except for greasy marking to the headboard. The staircarpet was showing signs of wear but again was clean. There is a bar, but I did not see this open. The main complaint was over breakfast available at an extra charge of £7.50. No breakfast menu, long wait and poorly cooked - the toast was barely warm let alone toasted! No coffee offered, my colleague was served his in a milk jug and again the quality was poor. Having seen other reviews when booking this didn't come as a big surprise and it clearly depends on who is tasked with doing the breakfasts on that particular day - we only saw one person who was cook and waiter - it was just as well it was quiet. The point is that a continental breakfast would have been preferable and if the hotel is not geared up to providing cooked breakfasts then they should not be offered. There are a number of cafes in Old Town offering breakfasts and I would recommend this to any future guests, Subject to this I would still recommend the hotel as representing good value.

nobody at reception, i had to phone then the receptionist came over, 5 or 10 mins later. no restaurant, very tired looking, the lights were on motion sensors in the corridors, this would have been OK if they were strategically placed, i had to walk half the corridor in the pitch black before the lights came on. i was in one of the front bedrooms very noisy.. i will not stay again.

Nice and quiet at night and comfy clean large room. Stayed for two working weeks and slept like a baby. No problems for me. It can feel a bit deserted, not a problem for me but I could see how it may be to others as mentioned in other reviews, especially a solo female.
