Score from 372 reviews Very good
This historic building was once visited by Charles Dickens for his public readings. It offers a Dickens-themed restaurant, light, modern rooms with private bathrooms, and a themed bar.
Score from 405 reviews Good
Good location and price was ok
Dated interior and the rooms were boiling (radiator was off and it was winter), and very noisy with the window open
The place was old with bags of history n lovely n comfortable. Staff were pleasant n helpful
Everything was good
The location was very good for our purposes and although very very central to the town it was surprisingly quiet. We ate in the bar very good and reasonably priced.
couldn't find the tea making facilities ( in a cupboard under t.v.) only found that out after we left by e mail
Great location and gorgeous hotel
Very noisy from outside during the night - bottle bins being emptied and noise from people. Would stay again but in a room away from the noise - left hotel feeling very shattered. Reception staff helpful although didn't ask how our stay was Otherwise I wod of mentioned the noise
The peace and quiet of my room
Walking access to city centre is great, friendly staff, cleanliness, newly fitted bathroom. Good size rooms and nice atmosphere
The one complication is that it is an old listed building and so it is difficult to get to the romos (up and down stairs, round corridors etc) with cases etc as there are no lifts and nobody to help (i.e Porter). The other slight problem is vehicle access for acrs unless you are using fully licenced Taxis
We got upgraded to an executive suite
There was no bottled water in the room
Friendly staff. Free wi-fi. Warm room. Comfy bed. Right in the centre of town.
Very nice staff and location!
The bed was extremely bad and caused me a sore shoulder
Staff were exceptionally friendly Food was simple but good portion size
No on-site parking WIFI average at best (far better to use 4G) Bed was way too soft
Works just fine for me, location, service, food and good attentive staff. Very quiet too, with no nightlife noise nearby and no party animals in residence on my three recent trips?
No dislikes here.
Great front desk staff and Manager. An affordable alternative to the functional modern chains. Super location in old, character building. Steps up, no lift, but this is the trade-off for character.
Central, in historic building - character compared to modern purpose-built hotels. Friendly staff - I had made a booking error and the Manager was very helpful in resolving the problem.
Great room, but a little dated (e.g., hot tap and cold tap, not mixer tap).
Good hotel good staff very good location for night life
Staff so helpful. Cleanliness was first class. Breakfast was comprehensive. Wi-Fi had great connection
I cannot fault the Hotel.
Town centre location
I was next to the air conditioning units of the Oracle shopping centre opposite - so I went out and bought ear plugs so I could sleep better. No way to control the heating in the room - they provided a blanket to keep warm.
The rooms and hotel are very basic. You pay for location here not the hotel. The breakfast was terrible when I asked for Salt and Pepper I got the kitchen's salt and pepper!! The whole hotel is very cold and not comfortable at all. With a bit love and care it could be great. When we returned to have a nightcap at 11 pm we were told by a very patronising porter that in England pubs shut at 11 pm. As I come from the North of England I disagree with this sentence wholeheartedly and usually the bars in hotels are open longer anyway. No, I will not return. If I want a basic hotel I go to Ibis for a fraction of the price of this hotel.
Old worldwide feel but tired
Tired and run down
I never thought this hotel would be such a great place to stay! I've found a offer with 66% discount. General quality of the room very good despite you have to understand the building is very very old! - Location - Value for money (= 30£ for the single room ensuite) - Staff - room
- nothing to write
The night porter was excellent very friendly & helpful even let me use his shoulders to get up the stairs at 4am due to much fun juice. Great bloke owe him big time.
Great location in Reading town centre. Charming old tudor building.
They never responded to my email and they didn't know anything about the history of the hotel.
Good location Helpful staff
Big rooms which were cleaned and furnished to high standard.
Fire alarm went off at 4am - no apology from staff in the morning at check out.
