This unique residence is a modern reworking of the Great Western Hotel, built in 1844 and reputed to be the oldest surviving train hotel in the world.

Got a bargain, Location is good, decent water pressure
No temperature control, mattress seemed well used/worn/old, pillows were very uncomfortable, room could do with being redecorated, it wasn't as nice as other Mercure hotels where we have stayed before
It is a lovely location with a history.
The open courtyard had a TV playing football etc. until 11.30. This was on when no one was watching it. Given that it was a warm night it was inconvenient to shut the double-glazed window. I had to request a bath towel. You have a warning in the rooms about paying for damages - what type of clients do you expect?
I arrivied early and asked if it was possible to book in..... yes was the answer and what a lovely receptionist i was greeted too she could not of help me more the short time i stayed at the george hotel .The room and bathroom was well maintained and spotless with free wifi .The hotel is in a very good location about a 5 mins. walk from the railway station and in the heart of reading.I would recommend this hotel ,and thank you for a lovely stay keep the good work up .
We decided to pick the hotel as we were going for a night out. Upon getting there we were greeted by a lovely polite receptionist. She told us where the room was. The whole of the hotel is very clean and for being in the centre of Reading, the rooms are very spacious. The showers for a hotel were excellent and a good temperature with enough towels. In the morning new towels were provided. Overall this is a very good hotel for the price
Location to City
No car parking available
no air con
Loved this hotel for its history. Very central to shopping, library, church and railway.
Food just OK
being a bit of a regular, I got a free upgrade to executive - room was at the top of the hotel, no stairs, but really was worht the climb ...thank you!
no lifts (but then this is the oldest building in Reading, complete with wonky walls and floors so there is never going to be one). good hotel but definitely not for the infirm
Rome had very little natural light and only a terrible view of the hotels back yard. Noisy once resteraunt and bar opened.
Was very clean, lovely rooms and friendly staff. Discount parking which was good. Very good value for money. I'll stay again.
Nice clean, comfortable room in town. The décor in some of the corridors could do with updating but it didn't personally bother me as I was just passing through them, the room itself was nicely decorated and well equipped. Really comfortable overnight stay and the staff were very friendly and efficient.
Only thing I noticed is that the room could have done with another light (or a brighter light) as the ones in there were just a little dim when trying to get ready! Otherwise all very good.
close to the oracle shopping center, restaurants and bars
no air conditioning, boiling hot in the room, because of the heat we had to have the the window open which meant we could hear all the drunk people after their night out around 2.30am, 3am. So we had the worst sleep ever but on the plus side this is the cheapest hotel in the right location which you will find.
Slightly disappointing small room, With a view of the back of the air conditioning units
Colonial ambience & staff were very helpful
Rooms need to be refurbished . Musty smell !
Very helpful staff
Room too hot. No security on window so couldn't leave it open.
Good location. A place with character.
Asked for quiet room but still noisy with window open. View vey dull.
quiet, clean. room very comfortable and staff very helpful.
Really hot in the room which made it difficult to sleep
A modern hotel in an interesting old building in Reading town centre, no more than 10 minutes walk from the station. Good quality single room with bath was available at a sensible price (instead of having to pay a premium for single occupancy of a double room), making the room itself excellent value for money. Room had view across a town street - not a back yard as is sometime the case with singles). Staff were pleasant and helpful and there was no problem about returning very late after a concert in London. This is a proper hotel that for me beat the so-called "budget" chains in terms of value for money. It made sense for breakfast to be charged separately; I decided in the morning to go for it and found the quality of food provided very good.
Nothing really, except price of breakfast was slightly on the high side so I have said good rather than excellent for overall value for money. Oh, and I couldn't find any fried eggs - always a slight disappointment! Seriously, no real complaints at all.
Very hot & stuffy & extremely noisy form outside most of the night, although was a very hot night!
Parking - we were not advised that there is a facility for guests to park in the nearby Queen St car park for a flat rate of £6. Instead we had to carry our cases a long way from a further car park, and pay full rate.
The staff made me feel like a movie star :)
The shower was a poor trickle, which was disappointing. And although the hotel advocates for saving water, I got 4 new towels after my 1st night, although I put my used towels on the rack as requested if you wanted to save water. Please inform your cleaning staff and make me feel better about helping out the environment...
We booked this hotel as we were attending Henley regatta. We therefore weren't at the hotel for long. We arrived just before midnight and were greeted by a friendly face. We spent a very comfortable night and checked out at 10am. But liked what we saw.
The room was extremely hot and we were only able to open the window and inch.
- Not top of the bill, but cheap for good quality rooms. - Best located in Reading close to shops, bars and restaurants - Cheap parking - Charm of old building - Friendly staff
High temperatures in hotel. (to warm for me). So we had to open a window (not a real problem).
