position of hotel was fantastic looking over river as was view from bedroom window. Cosy lounge and bar for relaxing.
Room decor was little dated but clean and tidy.
The location, the bar food and the service in the evening was fab!
Breakfast was cold and the service was shocking. No bowls, glasses, menus available. When breakfast arrived it was cold.
I loved the venue, open fire and bed. The bathroom was adequate but the shower needed updating
Heating in the bedroom was not on and temp -5 outside. Had to pull out furniture to find a plug and hairdryer worked for 60 seconds and then stopped. Old fashioned version hairdryer.
Good size rooms. Excellent breakfast. Sizeable bar food, welcoming hotel. Certainly stay again Plenty of parking and quiet but I would imagine could egg very busy
Friendliness of staff, superbly equipped and extremely clean room, with tea/coffee/hot chocolate making facilities. Nice location on river and near a lovely bridge. Excellent
Overpriced meals (breakfast £10 !!) - good for those on an expense account! Fortunately there are more reasonably priced meal choices in nearby Darlington 6 miles away. Poor.
The original features, comfy bed, modern bathroom, lovely warm heating, tasty food, hot hot breakfast, views
dirty table at tea, lukewarm evening meal, staff smoking at the door
The Inn itself. Bargain price Open fire in one of the lounges. Courtyard car parking.
The vege-sausages served at breakfast. Cleanliness of lower parts of shower surround. (deposits of minerals and growth of mould. Parking not secure.
Nice surroundings -log fires and a well priced menu
The location of the hotel was lovely and it did look inviting when we arrived as all the open fires were lit. The food was also quite nice when it arrived hot that is and the staff we spoke to were quite friendly but I'm afraid it went downhill after that.
Our room obviously hadn't had a thorough clean in a while as there was dust on all the lamps and shades, I had to crawl under dressing table to find a socket for my hairdryer and it was also covered in dust. The bathroom was much the same, only the top of the towel rail was clean where the towel had obviously wiped off the dust the rest of it was covered, both shower doors were broken and water in the shower lukewarm, we also struggled to get the toilet to flush properly. The public areas were freezing and we ate dinner, me in my jacket and my partner with 2 jumpers on, when we asked if open fire could be stoked up we were told no as it set off fire alarms, yet when we were in there the next day it was roaring away. Breakfast was much the same, though it was nice it was too cold to linger over (there are radiators in the areas where we ate but all stone cold). You also had to go looking for a member of staff everytime you wanted anything from the bar (maybe a bell on the bar would help). My partner did pass all these concerns on to staff at check out, as yet nobody has been in contact, I think that says it all !! I would never normally leave a review but felt I had to warn others as looking at review score you would think you were getting a bargain, you're not.
Original room not serviced at all since previous guests. Second room no better - Room cleanliness poor. Windows not very good so outside noise was loud. Broken lights. Lamps with bulbs missing. Shower head broken. Shower door broken. Sink blocked. They did not charge me for my stay which I was happy about as the stay was a big disappointment. Also no night porter as he was on holiday and no replacement was made despite in room info book stating to contact for issues. The other point of contact was to Dial from your room? No phone in the room!!
The horrendous noise that came from outside of our room ALL NIGHT LONG. It was a fan or generator of some sort that continuously rebooted throughout the night, keeping us awake. Reception staff during check out were very ignorant, they asked how our stay was, I explained about the noise and there response was 'oh ill have to look and see what that could be'. After contacting the manager via email, I got a vague response suggesting that next time I should have a room close to the river.... No as we wont be returning due to the lack of professionalism. Disappointed. I will stick to budget hotels in future as the service is a lot better.
Very clean and cosy
Room wasn't clean
Breakfast was excellent, staff friendly and room comfortable.
Shower was a bit grubby round the bottom. Pillowcases not provided for spare pillows.
staff, food, room and location
This hotel offers amazing value for money. I've stayed in hotels 5 times the price of The George which haven't been half as good. Great room, parked outside, fab garden and super quick wifi.
I could quibble about a few minor things but that wouldn't be fair for a nightly rate of £39! My only recommendation to the hotel would be to consider some vegitarian dishes for the menu, currently non existent.
Nice position by the river.
Surly male receptionist - when he finally appeared from kitchen. On guiding us to our rooms he failed to even hold doors open despite us struggling with luggage.
Rooms very comfortable Staff courteous, friendly and efficient Bar / bar meals Overall a very pleasant stay
One of our choices for evening meal wasn't as good as it could be but the other was excellent
Staff were friendly. Breakfast was good. Otherwise nothing outstanding.
Bed was hard. Toilet not attached to wall and moved noisily when used. Shower attachment not properly fixed to the wall. Breakfast room was cold. Bathroom extraction fan noisy. Was not advised that the roads around were mostly closed due to roadworks making it difficult to get to. Hotel a little dated and tired.
We always stay at the George when needing to be near Darlington as it is excellently situated for the A1(M), the A66 or the roads to the countryside. It is a reliable old coaching inn in a unique and picturesque spot.
Excellent location, special memories, loved it!
No easy access to an electric socket for hair dryer in our room. Had to crawl under the dressing table to get a to plug near the mirror.
Warm room Ok decor Beautiful location Great food
Uncomfy bed Dusty bathroom Useless ironing board
Good value. Wonderful riverside location
No water and glasses in bedrooms
Everything....nothing not to like!
