The George Hotel  

Friendly staff. Good Clive and good quality food in the bar.

We said in the Silver Birch room 8 for 3 nights. The decor was dated and the the bathroom was in dire need of refurbishment. There were cracked tiles and dirty stained grouting were unacceptable. The room was badly lit. Housekeeping was also lax. The sink and the toilet were not cleaned one day nor were bins emptied.

The old part of the hotel is good.

Poorly maintained doors slam shut every time someone uses them. I have never stayed in such a noisy hotel, the sound insulation leaves nothing to the imagination!.The rooms in the former stables all have drainage issues so there is an aroma that is not good, especially in the bathrooms!

The location from the motorway and Darlington itself was very good as we were visiting family, therefore travelling distance to and from Darlington was short. The Hotel was very pleasantly situated by the river, the room we had was excellent, with a view over the river. The room itself was excellent. Downstairs the bar was very good also, with the lovely big log fires, especially as the weather was cold during our visit. The staff were very friendly and polite also the breakfast was delicious. We totally enjoyed our stay and the next time we are visiting Darlington we will definaltely book at the George Hotel, hopefully for longer the next time Thank you for a lovely stay.

The standard and comfort of our room

Not so much a dislike but a general comment - this is a centuries old former Coaching Inn and attempts a few decades ago to 'modernise' the exterior have faded and the overall external structure is now 'worn' and dull. The only other 'observation' was the waitress at breakfast, it became a little 'Fawlty Towers' experience as the young woman could not fully understand English and when taking our order could not understand our request for herbal tea which was on the printed menu and we pointed to it and her comment of 'I Spanish - I no understand!' - we never got our herbal tea!! But even so, if in the area again would consider staying.

Very comfortable room, well furnished with all facilities, ie tv/courtesy tray. Excellent ensuite - powerful shower with free toiletries and very clean. Lovely breakfast - great choice of fruit/cereal and vegetarian cooked option available too. Also morning newspapers available - a very relaxing start to the day! We also dined in the restaurant and can recommend the excellent fish pie and sausages & mash main courses!

The dining room was a bit chilly, especially the tables by the window where there was a draught coming through - but it was mid-January so probably ok most of the time.

Good price for a double room (having booked a single and been upgraded) Cooked breakfast and evening meal were very good. Staff attentive and welcoming

Hard pillows and uncomfortable bed with room in need of a little more care and attention. (Two light bulbs missing and generally in need of a good clean or re-decoration)

Beautiful setting with stunning riverside views. Very clean rooms with good facilities. Loved the ambiance of the public bar with coal fires, very welcoming on a cold January evening.Breakfast menu excellent with a very varied choice. Friendly, helpful staff. We would definately stay again.

More a general comment than a complaint, the evening bar menu was a little pricey for the portion size. Some of the food served was very good & some average.

The location was ideal for our visit as we needed to be close to Darlington. The room was very clean and a good size. The meals were excellent, nicely presented and good value. The staff were helpful, but not overbearing.

I had not been to this Hotel for 20 years so was interested to see what it was like. I arrived on a cold winter evening to a warm welcome and lovely roaring fires. Did not eat there in the evening as had made other plans but would do so another time. Breakfast in the dining room the river overlooking the river was lovely. Would definitely return for business or pleasure.

The lovely open fires. Cosy places where we could sit and chat with family and friends. Great facilities for the wedding meal and celebration. Good food - hot and tasty. Very pleasant location with sensational countryside. Beautiful gounds and view over the river - and quaint village nearby.

Room rather dark - reading lamps needed. A very noisy and rather drunken function kept us awake till after midnight on the Friday we arrived.

Friendly and comfortable and good value for money. Good location for the lakes.

Needs redecorating.

The George is a very welcoming hotel with friendly, cheerful and polite staff. The meals were of a very good standard and for their quality remarkably good value. £21 for a three course meal with wine is good value indeed. The hotel's restaurant has spectacular views over the River Tees and even tables well away from the windows have a good view. Several reviewers have mentioned that the decor was a bit dated. I'd disagree. A glance at the photographs will have shown them that the hotel is very much in the "classic" style of a country hotel which, in the north of England does not mean 21st century decoration! There was creaking floorboard noise from the upstairs rooms but in an old building this is surely to be expected! The only problem I had was that mobile phone reception is very poor - both T Mobile and Orange reception was very weak. Perhaps this is something the hotel could discuss with the mobile phone companies.
