Everything seemed alittle dated.
When we arrived at the Grapes the landlord gave us a very warm welcome with all the necessary information for our stay. The room was clean and comfortable and the location is quiet, with lovely scenery and plenty of parking spaces. The breakfast was excellent - we were asked what we wanted and it was lovely. Hope to stay at the Grapes again in the future! Thank you Mark!
Good food - pleasant staff - quaint old Inn (circa 1770) - good clean rooms with no road noise - good value for money.
Communal areas could be cleaner.
A nice old pub which would be a lot better with a little tlc.
Dirty carpets in entrance to rooms made a bad first impression. Smoke from badly vented fire place in bar areas - very unhealthy. Cold plates - spoilt good food. View of rubbish from bedrm.window.
Best of all the location close to Whitby, the NYM Steam Railway and Salturn by Sea, all of which are WELL worth a visit. Wer had a great breakfast in the bar overlooking the Dam and watching the mist come and go, while the previous evening we had a great meal served by the log fire with the dog asleep close by. Plenty of free tea and coffee in your room and an acceptable TV. WiFi also OK. If your room is cold, just ask for a fan heater as well as the ch is thermostat controlled from somewhere else! Book in advance, its worth it!
Room was a bit squashy but had a great view of the rising sun over the dam and hills beyond. Hall way entrance and stairs could do with a a bit of renovation, but as the owner had only been here 18 months doing everything at once must be difficult and the most important things HAD BEEN DONE!
Friendly staff very helpful
the standards of cleanliness Food
The roast chicken dinner was good
The room was v. Small, window was double glazed and the glass was smoked therefore bad to look through. It looked onto a flat roof which was used by landlady to get access to the garden. Breakfast was very slow having already asked for an early getaway.
Warm, friendly welcome. Good breakfast.
The staff were very helpful and knowledgeable when I asked for my dietary requirements to be catered for. Would certainly recommend as a place to stay for anyone requiring a gluten-free diet.
Room was clean & tidy with en-suite facilities, breakfast was properly cooked and nicely presented.
Everything was good, the food was fabulous and well worth a visit, access to all local areas, the dales, whitby, staithes. Staff managed to get us a taxi too without any hassle.
Going through a refurb downstairs but the rooms were excellent and spotless. Once complete the grapes will be a little gem.
The owners have purchased and are trying to 'turn the venue around' which is a big task but they have achieved some comfort and are not neglecting the basics such as cleanliness. The breakfast portion sizes were incredible.
The pillows - too thin!
Great location and views
Entrance unwelcoming and up inviting. Lack of housekeeping.
staff friendly, room clean, food good though a little slow.
the decor could have been doing with lightening up but that is minor as my title says it is a work in progress Good luck for the future.
Lovely location. Excellent breakfast.
'Double' room was really just a single with a double bed, making it very pokey and stuffy even with the window open. Plumbing VERY noisy. Pillows were thin and unsupportive.
Excellent food well worth a meal whilst you are therex
Good traditional Pub Food. Room clean and staff excellent.
Accepted dogs, room clean, coffee etc available to refill yourself. Large portions of food, both bar meals and breakfast.
Shabbiness and neglect obvious in public areas and outside the building. Rooms accessed through a disused 'snug'area that had a strong musty smell. Current owner been there 16months, maybe these things will be adressed, but no signs of 'work in progresss'.
The bed was comfortable and clean bedding etc. Satff were excellent and made very welcome.
Only problem was shower cubicle too small otherwise ok
great staff , lovely place , on the doorstep to a weekend of adventure . whitby , robin hoods bay and dally forest
To be fair the current owner has not long since taken over and he has a lot of work to do to bring it up to standard , but he is a very nice guy and I wish him the best.
The room was very small and the whole place is in desperate need of some TLC.
My family and I had a lovely stay at The Grapes, we stayed 2 nights B&B, the room was immaculate and very clean lovely white bedding the beds were very compfy. Mark and Lynn's hospitality was lovely very welcoming and could'nt do anymore for us.
Due to the fact that Mark and Lynn only took over The Grapes 12 months ago, they unfortunatly were left with many issues of improvments interior and exterior of the building, they are work very hard, on the improvements and I'm looking forward to going back, to see what has been done.
very friendly and helpful staff. The food was excellent and there was a very good range of food on offer. The view from the bedroom was superb We thoroughly enjoyed a walk around the reservoir before we left.
good outlook from room.
Bar/accommodation needs updating, toilet made noise when flushed, long wait for evening mean despite being only guests there!
Handy for Whitby on the A171 and good parking. Restaurant and bar so no need to go out in evening. Good meals with large helpings. Excellent breakfast. Warm room with heating on the whole time.Twin room was clean and tidy with good newish beds.
The building is in need of a 'make-over' and parts are quite tatty- downstairs toilets in particular. There is no wi-fi or phone signal for my mobile - but there is for Vodafone apparently. Breakfast quite late at 8 am to 9 am if you need to be off somewhere- perhaps we get up too early.
